Mr. Cummings was and is an awesomely talented person. There's not much he can't do on stage and writing wise. Love the Guess Who and their many many hits. Great show tonight!!!

Burton Cummings (the Guess Who) had one of the best rock voices, but weirdly contrasting, on stage looked like he was part of Vegas lounge act. Love these posts of the Midnight Special!

Yeah he was probably 10 years too early going with the ‘clean cut’ look. 1974 was still in the middle of the hard rock era.

I love you Midnight Special. I secretly stayed up to watch when I was 8 or 9 years old. Even though my folks didn’t listen to most of the music (think Carpenters and Johnny Mathis), I knew it was something awesome to behold. Rediscovering these amazing artists who performed LIVE leaves me in awe every time. What a treasure trove ☮️💜🎶

I recently read a great Burton Cummings interview. Among the things they talked about was due to poor management The Guess Who was bilked out of millions. That's why they toured an astounding 80% of the time. It's the R& R HOF's loss they haven't been inducted.

Wishbone Ash, what a sweet surprise!
Coincidentally, I read an article about Blowin Free by Wishbone Ash just this week.
Great information about the girl who inspired the song, the Steve Miller riff that inspired the music, and the Steely Dan and Thin
Lizzy song riffs that subsequently were inspired by Blowin Free.

I’d like to hear what you read about the “girl who inspired” Blowin’ Free, can you please share? Ty

      I’ll quote the article:
“the seeds of the song…had been sown by bassist/vocalist Martin Turner’s memories of a teenage summer romance in his home town of Torquay. Turner had briefly become entwined with Swedish exchange student Annalena Nordstrom, whose hair was ‘golden brown…
Neither spoke the other’s language, and when Turner asked whether he could give her a kiss, she told him falteringly: “You can try.”
Although the romance fizzled out after Nordstrom returned home, the experience ignited what Turner calls “a glorious anthem to the spirit of love”. “

Oh my, I got chills reading this it’s sooo lovely!
Summer romance and then they had to depart to their respective homes, countries. Believe many of us have had this same experience, I did at age 17 while visiting my grandmother out of state. He and I shared “stares” for weeks (I’ll never forget his gorgeous chocolate brown eyes with long dark eyelashes), when finally, he approached me 3 days before I had to return home 1,200 miles away. He was my 1st real kiss and we wrote letters to each other exchanging SR HS class pics and calling a few times, he was going to fly out to visit over the Christmas break, I remember asking my dad for permission. But life, had other plans and our Senior high school year took over. Thanks for the trip down memory lane and first loves, they are so strong and memorable 💞💟.

Firing up the Way Back Machine XL for this episode! I can't wait to see Wishbone Ash, my friends and I used to think we "Discovered" them because they were so good, but we never heard them on 97 KMOD the Rock Station. The Guess Who bringing the hits that made for the soundtrack of the 70s. Slade is always hot, I knew David Essex for Rock On but the Midnight Special has turned me on a lot of his good songs. Sha Na Na is always a hoot, no wonder they had their own show later. Loe Kottke was a Suprise the 1st time I saw him here, he's always entertaining. Judi Pulver may have of those hits that don't get played on the Oldies Channel, may trigger one of those lost memories. Sound line up, thanks Burt!

@@daisywrabbit Yes, as a dedicated video collector, there is very very little Professional footage (Or even any decent quality footage PERIOD) of Budgie. It is such a shame. I went to a Budgie Convention in Wales in 1994 where Ray Phillips Band 6 Ton Budgie played a full gig, and all the Budgie guys turned up. I spoke to Burke for a while and he mentioned how when they were in Poland in the 70s, they were treated like Gods, chauffeur driven everywhere and filmed all over the place. I wonder if the footage still exists. Also on the night, we watched a Budgie concert from a few years prior in San ANtonio before the actual 6 Ton Budgie gig. That video never did a circulation because Burke didnt like his vocal performance and he had a big say in the matter. Who knows? Not many of us expected to ever see all this archive material from Midnight SPecial. Shame on the BBC for deleting the bulk of Old Grey Whistle Test. At least we got to see Budgies Who do you want for your love

    I think we missed it

Wow- Just a great episode of a great show. So many memory's. The first song Wishbone Ash played was one of the first songs I learned on the guitar. Sha Na Na blew me away. And of course the Guess Who-just great - I wonder how many joints I smoked with my friends listening to them? LOL A LOT LOL

It's kind of ironic that The Guess Who are on the midnight special since they have a song called "Clap for the Wolfman" off their 1974 release "Road Food" which featured "Wolfman Jack's" sound bites on the track.

Just listening to this episode and the announcement of the next episode makes me feel so depressed at the state of popular music today. I am so happy to have had the privilege to have grown up with the Midnight Special and all the incredible artists of my youth and I feel so bad for the youth of today who have nothing but cookie cutter artists to listen to.
EDIT: I have to add that I forgot that Burton Cummings was ever SO YOUNG!!! LOLOL

Burton Cummings should be in everyone’s top 10 rock vocalists of all time. That lead guitarist does a great job in the Randy Bachman role. Also, that American Woman riff sounds very Zeppelin-ish. Jimmy Page was a huge fan of the Guess Who. The riff as it’s played here is hypnotic - reminds me of Four Sticks

A few years ago, I bought tickets to a Guess Who concert, I was so disappointed that Burton Cummings was not in the band LOL, I should have done my homework...but the beauty of the the night was the opening act Mitch Ryder who was fantastic, still sounded so good and he looked great too 🎼🎵🎶🎤🎸
Fun Fact: Wolfman Jack said in an interview that he never got paid for participating on "Clap For The Wolfman"

Slade. Where did they come up with their unusual name?
My favorite song of theirs is the lively ‘84 “Run Runaway.” What a great and entertaining band - SO FUN to watch!
Has anyone EVER heard of a man or boy with ‘Slade’ as a 1st name? My ex husband an artist & bass player (deceased), wanted to name our son this, I disagreed and won out ha!
It had to have come from the band? Right?
This will always make me wonder, hmmm.

they were originally called The 'N Betweens then Ambrose Slade in the 70s just Slade

@@ravynskye1310 You have just answered a fifty year mystery of mine too. I was an American closet Slade fanatic and have watched every interview and documentary I could find on the boys and never until today knew where their name came from….. Just last year I made pilgrimage to Liverpool to see the Beatles beginnings. I went to the Cavern Club and was most excited to see Noddy Holders autograph on a board at the entrance.

For anyone just discovering Wishbone Ash, _Live Dates_ is probably the best way to hear them, especially for the 1-2-3 of "The King Will Come," "Warrior," and "Throw Down the Sword" from the _Argus_ album. They definitely were a live band, but unfortunately one with some strong egos that made it hard for them to work together.

During this time…Zeppelin were working on songs like Kashmir, In The Light, Trampled Underfoot. My God, imagine? “Physical” though wouldn’t drop about until a year later, in Mar. of ‘75. They didn’t tour in ‘74. Seeing Slade here reminds me of how Noddy claimed (when he used to drive Plant to gigs in the early days) that the New Yardbirds were bound for failure. 🤔 I think that’s Waddy Wachtel with Judy Pulver there…hiding in the shadows.
