He openly admits to not knowing how to read music. He just listens to the song, breaks it down, and puts his own spin on it. It’s the equivalent of writing Shakespearean plays and not knowing how to read. The dude is absolutely insane with his skills. Blows my mind.
IMO he sounds too much like a drum-machine than a human and missing dynamics/accents, but maybe his new Jazz-band is teaching him that. I prefer Sebastian Lanser and doesn't seem any slower or less complex if you listen to "Ten Sepiroth" for example.
@@neilberry1552 What's so funny? A great drummer needs to master at least three different stroke dynamics: strong, medium, soft. I only get one or two with this guy. I also listen to Death Metal and if the drummer sounds to robotic and there are no softer melodic parts, I don't like the music. Drummers like Lanser or for example from Beyond Creation, First Fragment can sound like Jazz-drummers as well. And apart from Death Metal I definitely prefer a Carter Beauford to Estepario, who is IMO the king of dynamic percussive drumming.
Love what you said. He is a true musician. Many times, he’s shown that he knows the songs. He listens and tries to appreciate the lyrics. But his heart performances is simply a technique showcase. He tunes the drums and selects cymbals so they don’t resonate. This way you can hear every little hit. He’s just showing what’s possible
Why is he so good? Honestly? A WHOLE LOT of practcing time. And by practicing time I mean countless hours on the drums, listening to all sorts of stuff, body exercises and on top of that he recently quit somking and drinking. This is a man with a mission! His actual talent is his focus.
I saw a video that he made I guess recently where he was talking about how we going to start filming all the practice that goes into each of the things he presents so we can see that it takes work to reach that finished product. He's not afraid to show that even the best have to work hard at it, practice it over and over, make mistakes, and see that the final performance is just the tip of the iceberg. I remember seeing an actor/dancer can't think of who, saying they got to watch Fred Astaire rehearse, make mistakes, get frustrated, work thru the parts. And we just get to see the gravy, just cause they make it look easy doesn't mean that it is.
His #1 skill is .. putting in the work.. He is very clear about that and has made several videos about it. He does what he does because he puts in hours and hours for years to get where he is. And he is convinced that anyone who puts in the time can get good.. That may be a bit optimistic, but he is also not totally wrong.
@@AndrewRooneyDrums True. When he says talent does not exist, I expect he means talent is not a "switch" or a magic pill, it's more a catalyst, You stil have to put in the work but if you have the talent, the results tend to come faster.

5:30 he explains the single pedal/double pedal activation switch on the right side of [just the one] right pedal. He isn't using a slave drive and traditional double pedal single stroke technique here... he is using a custom pedal that provides a single stroke hit upon the lift of the right foot and another hit on the expected press of the pedal... with an activation switch hit for when he wants it to be just a single stroke pedal again (something I thought of in the 90's). Really cool stuff!

Fun fact about the original beat in Stayin Alive: It was one of the very first No. 1 hits which used a drum loop - the session drummer only did one session, fell ill and wasn't available for a followup session so the producers went with a 8 bar loop he recorded for the demo that everyone liked. He's so impressive when playing the drums and so much fun to watch. Not really my style but respect the dedication to the craft and he's chops are ridiculous. Really glad he's doing well.
