You get distortortion and unwanted frequenties. Even with that how much rounder and warmer her sound is then the others. And when she does the " wrong " examples it also sounds different. If you don't hear that its not Sarah fault but your ears ;)
i'm a guitar player - im not even sitting in an orchestra, but this is such a good lesson for how important it is to look at timing, resonance and musical feeling. bravo to the students and this perfect sample on how to teach.

I do it sometimes without thinking. horn players are 10x louder than any trumpet or trombone. They have to be because the horn is facing the wrong way. On top of that it's aimed right at his ear. I use to think i twas disrespectful but its really... nothing XD
It's so important for the tutor to tell the student that they are being so picky with them because the student is so good! she has a great teaching style

How fortunate he is to have this lovely lady and one of the great horn players alive today to be his teacher. I doubt he will ever forget her marvellous teaching and influence upon him. I have heard her play in the Berlin Philharmonic, and she is special, believe me.
For those who may not play brass instruments, these are mostly subtle details she's harping on. At this level, you need to push the envelope and having someone of her caliber teaching, coaching you is incredible!

@@jkara7843 actually they do a lot of mistakes. Listen carefully to how she sings it (or how she plays) and how they try to repeat it. You will notice a lot of differencese...tuning, sound, volume, rythm...it's a long way to Tipperary
These videos are amazing. In them people can hear and see how difficult is to play these pieces correctly. She is very demanding but the reward shows. She helps these guys blossom the right way.
This beautiful video encapsulates the enormous amount of work and dedication it takes to be qualified to play with a professional symphony orchestra. They are "SO GOOD!" When I hear them play the ensemble passage of the music of Beethoven, it makes the hairs on my arms stand up. Plus auditions nowadays for these major orchestras and others, I'm sure, performed from behind a curtain, so based on pure musicianship and no racial, gender and other bs considerations........which is fantastic!!!

@@12Trappor That's just because horns are weird. Traditionally when there's 2 horn voices it's usually horns 1 and 3 playing one voice and 2 and 4 playing the other. It's notated as the 2nd horn, but it is the lowest voice so colloquially it would really make more sense to call it the 3rd.
My daughter studied and played horn from sixth grade, all through junior and senior high school. she became very skilled and was chosen for honor band at the county and regional level. Upon graduation and going off to college, she put her horn down and never played again. one of the biggest disappointments of my life - all that money, time, and effort !😒 But the skills she learned by studying music have benefitted her for the rest of her life!😊
I’m not sure why this was suggested to me 3years after it was first posted and over two decades since I quit high school band. If only I had an instructor like her!
I don’t play a wind instrument, I can still tell when there are places or measures to improve on. We also don’t have the sheet music, so when she marks on something like a crescendo, we can’t really tell there was going to be one. Unless you predict it, or know the work well.
I play french horn, and i have for many years now, but i could never get over the whole anxiousness and rudeness of auditions. I did it as a "Hobby" if you will, knowing true well i would never do it professionally, because everything you do is judge by the most uptight people in the world. As much as i love the instrument and playing is of course, if you ever want to do it as a career, you should know, you will be judged, everything about you will be, and you are competing with hundreds of others of the same standard or higher. Just know that even if you or your teacher believes you to be the best, there are millions of players that will put you down for the most minute discrepancies. Just be warned.
Yes. This is why doing well in an audition takes, besides hard work and luck, the choice to step into yourself as a player and own how you play. You choose to surrender to the audition process and fully embrace yourself as a musician and leave everything on the table. You only reach the ability to achieve in an audition when other people’s judgement of you literally doesn’t matter to you. It takes belief.

You're in sixth grade. Focus on developing a good tone with clear single tongue flexibility first. As your body and embochure develop, you can move onto double tonguing.

Another point worth remembering is that the pupils pedagogical approach and the guest Master’s approach might not . . . gel. [new edit] Ah, yes: the monstrous initial challenge the trio faces is that Beethoven put no dynamic marking! [ new edit ] She took way too long to correct the articulation of the quarter notes: what I would have said is, “gentlemen, how do we play ALL Beethoven quarters in fast tempi?” In unison, they should answer, “SHORT!” ( work in progress )
this shows how much work goes into the details of the art. Orchestra rehearsals are way easier when all these little details are worked out. A good player can adjust for whatever a conductor wants.... comes in handy when it's an especially tyrannical conductor.
Baribrotzer valves didn’t exist on horns back then. Even though they are using their valves now and then im pretty sure it can be played without valves

A remarkable difference in sound between the two horns. I guess that the horn of Sarah Willes is a little more expensive than the one of the pupil.
