One thing I love about this show is that none of the brass features feel like features. There's no "check out how many notes we can play in 8 bars". it all feels like it's part of a broader musical idea.

Yup I love this show so much for that and Bluecoats always write interesting and compelling brass books. The modern day "brass feature" is something that needs to be eliminated. Sooooo boring. It's literally the same stuff everytime, random double tonguing slop.

what is really special about this show is how palpable its excellence is. it’s just as incredible and striking to a casual audience member as it is to an experienced fan. a true landmark show!

I hope that's true. I can't help but feel that this show is actually a bit high brow for most non-DCI fans. I absolutely love it but I'm not sure how high on my list it will be to show to first-time viewers. Downside Up on the other hand is a lot more accessible in my opinion.

@@softglas I can speak to this actually. I took my parents to the show in Allentown, and while they have been obviously supportive of me and my career in the marching arts, they don't get opportunities to see marching shows that I'm not in or teaching.
After watching the first day of Allentown, they came away thinking that the Bluecoats show was on another level entirely from all shows they had seen that day. While they aren't part of the activity, they knew that it was something wholly different and remarked afterwards that they watched the whole production in slack-jawed awe. So I do think this show really connects even with people who are less engrossed in this hobby.

@@BluesClues2s i feel you! but anecdotally, ive shown this show to maybe 5 people that have never seen drum corps shows and they all loved it! i think you’re right that conceptually it’s high brow, but even if people dont connect with the concept right away, they cant help but to be wowed by it. my non-dci friends would whisper “oh, coooooool” while watching it haha

@@softglasthis show is fantastic, but I don’t really see it as being too high brow for the average viewer. My bar for high brow is Star of Indiana 1993 and Blue Devils 2012. Two of my all-time favorites but I wouldn’t show those to people unfamiliar with drum corps.

I marched in the Bluecoats when we missed finals in 99 and then clawed our way back into the top 12 and into single digit placement. The 2024 version of The Bluecoats is everything we ever dreamed of for the corps someday. To see it come together is surreal. I’m so happy for them.

Thanks for the alumni shoutout! I marched during the "transition era" from 2011-2013.
In 2012, there was a total replacement of the brass and visual staff, and new show designers, and a lot of members either aged out or didn't return. We had a grand total of 14 hornline vets. There was a real risk that things could have gone a different direction. Thankfully our member culture and some great staffing decisions led to the incredible team that has been running the Bluecoats for 10+ years now.
While my cohort of Bluecoats didn't achieve the same level of competitive success as more recent Bluecoats, we're extremely proud to have helped set the stage for this era.

I like how it just sounds like Everett is judging on the field in live time lmaoooo.
I think my favorite part of this show is that there is this social commentary that is normally directed towards the bluecoats. Its how they are the biggest innovators in this whole activity. So much change comes out of every single show that this group has done in recent years. That along with how this group can often be looked down upon for doing something "weird" or "different". This show, from its entire concept to its execution is proof that you can never look down upon them because they are normally so far ahead in the future of this activity.
Lets go bloo, they went for that 2.

Like you said towards the end of the video, this is going to be THE show prospective marchers are going to play on repeat until their time comes.
So many awesome moments between all the different sections. Every section and every caption were exposed at various points, and they were able to showcase those points exceptionally well. The guard feature with their (foiled?) flags, the drumline with their intricate and dynamic composition, the brass with their phrasing, tonality, and ability to match pitch from end field to end field, the list goes on.
Congrats to the Bluecoats, we're all ready for next year!

I agree - not unlike TILT. I was not a Bluecoats fan until 2014. TILT changed everything! The intro alone was enough for any fan of DCI and/or seasoned musician to say..."wait------what was that? I need to hear that again". I'm referring to the sampled voice of the announcer slowing down and then speeding up ( ending with the powerful announcement "THE BLUECOATS"). Of course the pitch bend in the closer was mind blowing....and the leap of faith into the arms of the guard at the end was awesome. On top of everything else it was a very clean show. Degree of difficulty also needs to be mentioned because the drill from TILT ( and all shows after ) contains rapid movement while playing some of the most difficult parts of the show compared to other corps who stand still while playing the challenging parts.

Interesting because they tell the story about chaos, and in the beginning of the universe there was just 1 point e.g. the EP. Brilliantly articulated, and time was introduced, chaos ensued, and as the universe returns to form due to gravitational forces (the big crunch) chaos will end and our universe will return to form, thus the EP (e.g. the stab) at the end of the show. Brilliant!

Considering just how many isolated hits there were in this show, especially at the beginning, their brass score is really impressive.

Only saw this show once live (prelims in Indy) but some of the sound design elements weren’t really audible where we were seated outside the 35s. Hearing the recording with headphones on make a huge difference.

I always appreciate hearing your observations on these shows since you marched DCI and have a lot of experience with the activity and music education as a whole. Hearing your takeaways and your criticisms, your reactions to details you haven't noticed before, etc. It's all really fascinating stuff to hear as a nerd. I'm really excited to see more reactions, and hopefully, Alan or Malik can tag along for some! Your guys' dynamic is so entertaining!

It's been suggested that if Change Is Everything that uniforms should have started as more tradition look similar to the drum major and then change into other uniform. Just a random comment. Great show.

As far as innovation and accessibility, 2016 is the GOAT. But 2016 doesn’t compare to the excellence in performance across captions and the stunning show design of 2024.

This show from the Bluecoats reminds of the older Crown shows from the early to mid 2000s! They were more Crown like than Crown this year. Crown lost their identity and Bluecoats have found theirs!

I could be completely grabbing for straws, but the moment at 7:20 feels like a Cadets nod to the 93 In the Spring show when the drumline comes out of the back corner during the ballad to show the juxtaposition of the smooth brass and the banging drums. In my mind it’s a Cadets nod anyways!!
