    Shotgun home meant a shotgun blast would hit an intruder in any part of the home due to the narrow width of the home. Good video👍

    You're taking time with this city. Good. It's a complex city and like Cincinnati, St Louis, heavily German at one time. They have identified 28 Louisville German-language publications between 1841 through 1938, My uncle's family published one of them. some published weekly, many of them short-lived. So cool. Enjoying and learning about places I have only passed thru. Thanks for your thoroughness.

    I can't thank you enough for this video. Even though I have lived in TX for 16 years and haven't been to Louisville since 2009, it holds a very special place in my heart. Both my parents grew up there and I have some ancestors through my dad's side who were there from the 1830's on. My dad's family lived in Park Hill in the 1940's - it was a solid middle-class neighborhood. My great-grandfather lived on the FAR West side as a child, then lived in the same house on Taylor Blvd. (right behind Churchill Downs) from 1928-1986. My mom grew up in the Highlands, on Roanoke. The Highlands is my favorite neighborhood on earth. So, so many happy memories walking and riding my bike through it when I would visit my grandmother in the summers. My lottery fantasy is to buy her house back.

    Pay close attention to Smoketown/Shelby Park, especially Logan St. That area has been the subject of a lot of businesses opening/revitalization. Logan St. Market is an indoor farmer's market that supports local vendors. Home prices there are getting insanely high due to runoff from Germantown/Schnitzelburg.

    The American Standard plant closed later than 1981. My stepdad worked there before we moved to Atlanta in 1988 and his being laid-off was ONE of the things that mitigated our leaving Louisville for Atlanta. May the full operation CLOSED in 1991? I just know he got a severance check and some or all of it was used to finance our move to Georgia.

    Old Louisville still looks very attractive. I look for student housing as it's the best place for my fixed income to find reasonable safety and reasonably priced rental units (for the most part).

    LIMERICK NEIGHBORHOOD
    The neighborhood was developed in the 1860s as a place of residence for employees of the Louisville and Nashville Railroad freight yard. It was named because nearly all of the residents were from the Irish county of Limerick. The St. Louis Bertrand Catholic Church was the centerpiece of the newly founded neighborhood. Limerick began the trend of working-class people living southwest of downtown, a trend which continues in the city to this day.
    The working class Irish immigrants lived in modest shotgun houses, with a moderate number of African Americans living in the alleyways behind them, while upper income Irish, known as "lace curtain Irish", built mansion houses on St. Catherine Street. The Irish Catholic presence in Limerick was strong enough that from 1872 to 1918 an annual St Patrick's Day march went from the church to Broadway. But as many of the railroad jobs left the area, the Irish began to move to South Louisville.
    On October 7, 1871, the Louisville Steam Engine Co. 7 was formed to provide fire protection to the "southern suburbs" of Louisville. Its firehouse at 821 S. 6th Street is the oldest continuously active firehouse in the U.S. On December 10, 2008, Louisville Mayor Jerry Abramson announced his intention to close the firehouse and disband the company on January 1, 2009.[1]

    at 32:54 you can see 503 E Caldwell St. The sign on the side says "KIN_ KARL'S FUR_ITURE." For awhile I've been researching this building, trying to find information about when it was built, what was inside of it before it was abandoned, etc. Does anyone have any information on this?

    It's too bad the video views are focused on the streets and parked cars. The beautiful Victorian homes of Old Louisville are on the periphery like an afterthought. This only shows front views of about five percent of the gorgeous homes. I live in Old Louisville, and I cannot believe my good fortune as I walk along its tree-lined, mansion-lined streets. It would have been nice to have the video shot out of the side windows. What a lost opportunity.

    • @ChrisHarden
      @ChrisHarden  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No lost opportunity. You can see the homes in the video.

    • @foreverjezebel1798
      @foreverjezebel1798 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have to agree with you. The views were looking straight ahead. Most of the homes were obscured by the trees.
      Still gave me a general idea of what the area looks like.
      I hope to be fortunate enough to walk leisurely down those streets some day.

    I was doing a TV return in park hill back in 2009. I worked for Aaron's a rent to own company. When I got in the house there was a gun on the coffee table. The guy ask now what u here for again while looking at the gun. In like a threatening manner. I said that's your TV deal with the store man. He said man you a cool white boy. But I wasn't to cool to be basically threatened just 30 sec before. He said u want a pop or something and I said sure cause I had a plan. When he went to get it I unplugged the TV which was off anyways and took my box cutter from my pocket and cut the cord. He came back and handed me a water. I said thanks and left promptly. He called and complained but I wasn't in trouble but everyone laughed cause he was threatening me over a 32 inch insignia
