    You probably have answer by now but if not, here goes. USB 1&2 is monitoring only; it can only go to headphones and is blended with the bus audio (before the final fader). USB 3&4 is a bus input to the system. If you push the "to phones" button, you are now monitoring the bus audio blended with USB 1&2, thats so you can multi-track and sync yourself to some audio source that you do NOT want in the mix!
    But USB 3&4 is from the computer and intended for the mix. To hear the mix simply release the "to phones" button and now you are listening to the mixer final output.
    In the computer you choose which audio output to use and you can have several simultaneously active. The system output should probably be on USB 1&2 so you don't inadvertently get system beeps and notifications in your mix; but sound sources or music sources can be sent to USB 3&4 to become part of the mix which of course is available to the computer via USB input or sound source. The USB to the computer is pre-fader; adjustment of the final mix fader doesn't affect the USB sound source.

    Awesome review, just what I needed thanks. Just purchased the Yamaha and also noticed I had to gain up my mic so much that noise became too loud. Gonna send it back and get the Mackie in return!

    I have both the yamaha 10xu and the 12xu with a rode podcast dynamic mic with no hissing in the recording. After watching this video a few times I noticed hissing and clipping in the audio on your zoom mixer, which leads me to believe that you don't understand dynamic mic vs a mixer preamp. Running the dynamic through a preamp like a cloud lifter or fathead would give you more headroom on the mic. Which would allow you to use lower gain levels on the mixer. You really shouldn't be going above 0db on the meter, and I bring this up with your obs or recording software in which you recommend bringing the meter to just below the red, and thats bad . The meter should be in the green and some yellow but no more then half way. Sm57 is a good mic but you should also look into a condenser mic as well in which that should help with lowe gains and lower compression. If you set the channel master to the 0 or unity, yamaha has a triangle. Then apply gain when talking into the mic to 0db. Its all about setting up properly. A mute button is a feature you want not necessary. All in all I think that with a different dynamic mic or condenser mic with proper gain levels you would of had a better experience .

      Yeah you may be right on a few points.... but this mixer does have very low gain... most of it is solved by going with mackie.... maybe in the end, the preamps in the yamaha are just not as good. I do have a cloudlifter for one of my mics and yes it does allow less gain, but this yamaha does have a less than ideal amount of hiss on most of my mics.

    I tried the Yamaha 10 as well as the 12xuf then tried the Mackie Pro 12 version three. Wow! You know what I love about it? The blend knob! I do a lot of my own recording playing various instruments and this knob is great! I also have my turntable and CD player running through this when it’s in my basement. Love this mixer has them beat in this price range. I will be using it for live streaming with my computer and also occasionally my iphone.

    - What do you mean there is no MUTE on Yamaha MG10XU, [STEREO MUTE] on the mixing console is the MUTE button! Check the Owners Manual for more details. If you want MUTE buttons on every channel, that’s different story, but I don’t get the point!
    - Don’t use the compression on the mic channel, turn it all the way down, adjust the gain/level and you will get enough juice!
    - I don’t hear any hiss on my headphones, may be you got a bad board! Again check the settings and see if you’ve engaged any unwanted knobs/ buttons
    - Read the manual and you will get answers to the shortcomings you discussed in this video.
    - Yamaha MG10XU is one of the best rated mixers and #1 seller in Stage Powered Mixers in Amazon for many years! Also search TH-cam and you will get a million reviews praising this mixing console!
    - If you don’t know how to use a particular equipment, don’t just blame the equipment! And if you like Mackie better, that’s your personal preference and I get it!

      Michi Mallu ummmm. Dude. There are no mute buttons on the individual channels and that’s the shortcoming. And I know exactly how to use it. I can’t help mackie just kicked it’s butt all over the place.

  • @curt203

    Thanks for the vid, but there are a few things you weren't aware of at the time of making it. You have the compact version of the mixer - there is is a fader version of the MG10XU (MG10XUF) that includes mute buttons on every channel. The sound effects on the Yamaha are also infinitely better if you care much about those - there is a better range of options and a parameter nob to fine tune each one. Weirdly, the larger versions of the console beyond 10 are named differently: the larger version with the faders is the default and the compact versions have a K on the end (MG12XUK, MG16XUK etc) - rather confusing! I can't speak much of the pre-amps or headphone output since I'm yet to purchase one, but I have seen reviews from reputable channels that have no quarrel with either - perhaps you are just using hard-to-drive mic and headphones? I intend on using it in combination with a 4 input audio interface so I can track instruments and vocals separately, so I can increase the gain on the interface to compensate for the pre's on the Yamaha if they really aren't sufficient as well as just using the headphone jack on the interface instead. A niggle with the Yamaha is that it apparently gets rather warm after extended use, whereas the Mackie does not, meaning you may have to remember to switch if off when you're done with it to prevent it being a fire hazard. Both the Yamaha and Mackie are good, but excel in different ways.

  • @johngerardmusic7761

    Perhaps you’re not hearing your preamps loud enough on the Yamaha because you have the master ‘Level Stereo’ knob turned down to low. In the video it is turned all the way down. I believe these preamps have 64 db of gain. That should be plenty.

    • @WorshiptheKingMusic

Thanks.. i feel yamaha effect 6 is the best reverb as i own one.. but plan to buy the mackie and seriously curious to know what effect would sound good on me..

    I want to disagree with the Yamaha low mic gain point. I have the smaller MG06XU. At my usual gain/level setting of 1 oclock for gain and 12 oclock for level, I get -10 db avg on Audacity. While my model lacks USB, I use the cheap $45 Behinger UM2 audio interface with its preamp gain set at 0 (lowest possible). Can't imagine the preamp gain being inferior on 10XU.
    And wondering how could 10XU be so popular if the preamps were so bad!

    I only know how to do it on Mac! If you want to use the last channel (7/8) to get you computer audio through on the profxv3, Go to Audio MIDI Setup, press ProFX and (configure speakers) then change it to analog 3 and 4 instead of 1 and 2. Make sure to have the L-R button pressed so it sends to it to the MAIN. Also have it set to TO PHONES and not CONTROL ROOM on the mixer. There you go!

      @thomasmaughan4798 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      USB 1&2 go ONLY to the headphones via the blend knob and the "to phones" monitoring switch. USB 3&4 go to the mix and appear in final output. To hear 3&4 release the "to phones" but it also ought to appear when "to phones" is pressed and the blend at top so the audio bus is heard.
      In the computer, choose USB 3&4 as the output destination for things you want going to the mixer.

    I have the Yamaha mg10xu all you points but what you hear can be solved with the preamp "Fethead or sE TNT", also adjustment level on channel 9/10. The head phone jack does annoy me with the noise. It is a bummer that I have to use a preamp but also on my scarlet 2i2 I have to crank up the gain to Max but then it inderduces noise. I am using the Sure sm48 mic.

    • @thomasmaughan4798
      @thomasmaughan4798 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@idesignwithchristine5276 A nice property of dynamic microphones such as Shure SM58 is they don't "clip" on loud signals. The microphone pre-amp might clip but the microphone won't. The Mackie reportedly has tremendous signal handling capability so it is also unlikely to clip. The SM58 is also cardiod directional; nearly complete cutoff to the rear, pretty good pickup from side and front. Rode is also extremely popular but I do not have personal experience with that brand. Rode tends to be used more for videography and the Shure SM58 and similar extremely popular with the sorts of recording you describe; instruments and vocals. The SM58 is pretty heavy, built to drive nails if you don't need it for recording stuff.

    I use mine for broadcasting internet radio and channel 3-4 button has to be on to get audio into the mixer. Channel 1-2 works when you depress the blend button but I think it’s flawed. You basically take send the computers source to line 1-2 in your audio settings. That’s how you get it into 1-2 and 3-3-4. A bit confusing but it does work.

    • @thomasmaughan4798
      @thomasmaughan4798 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The block diagram is helpful. USB 1&2 is ONLY for monitoring, it is not part of the mix! It is there so you can synchronize yourself for karaoke or multi-track recording. USB 3&4 is included in the mix. But you push a button to activate it and in mine it disables the 3.5mm 5/6 line input, but that's okay I just use 3/4 for line input from music device.

    • @DjSmoothNY

      @@thomasmaughan4798 Yes your correct. On mine which is the ProFX V10 when I press the button to off on line 9/10 it disables the 3-4 input which I'm using to stream audio my radio station.
