Find an Alaskan who's heard of the Kushtaka. Depending on who you ask, you may get a very serious response. Edit: Kushtaka basically translate to "otter people." They shapeshift and there are a mix of interesting stories in some parts of Alaska about them.
Ok, here are some things I would like to point out: - While I have seen kappa being depicted with an indention on their heads (like bowls), I've also seen that part of the head is depicted to look like an "upside-down" bowl, so it's possible that younger kappa have this "cyst" to stay hydrated, and as they get older their "cyst" eventually cracks to completely shattered, making it easier to get dehydrated, so you can say that feature is more like a semi-permeable pocket that stores water - The reason behind the connection between the otter and turtle youkai is debatable, but since otters are predators (I think), it's possible that normal otters hunt down young kappas in the similar manner that otters hunt down young beavers in America, and after a long while those same otters start to acquire features that of the kappas (this origin theory can also be applied with nekomata but I don't want to go off on a tangent here), which could explain why these otter youkai are depicted wearing robes and hats, and since this youkai is also a transforming youkai, it's possible that the ability to transform is common amongst predatory mammals that become youkai Thank You😌 -Double D

I just realized that in Mario 64 DS , there are 5 silver stars you have to collect in order to get a full star. Seeing the five silver plates to get a wish made me think of this.
It is...though apparently there is a chance it could come back..recently there has been a resurgence in creatures once thought extinct being found, called "Lazarus species" so it's possible one day in the future they could come back..it would be nice if that happened.
ShinKyuubi that does sound interesting, but do you think it may also be possible to introduce some otter species from Asia like the Asian small clawed otter to Japan? Also, Wolves in Japan are also extinct and their is a species of of wildcat that lives on an island called the Iriomote cat.
@@vexillumvixen6054 ...Well if it's one thing I've learned from fantasy, science fiction, and reality..nothing is 'impossible' only 'improbable' as I like to say..with modern technology we might be able to pull a Jurassic Park and clone the species back into being..also in 2017 an otter was sighted in Japan, possibly a Eurasian otter so something might come from that, as the species could propagate and then mutate back into the Japanese otter. there's actually an interesting thing with the shirikodama possibly being the liver--iirc, kelpies from Celtic mythology would trick people into water and then devour them, leaving ONLY the liver (which floats back up to the surface of the water). now i'm convinced that kelpies and kappa are long-lost partners in a symbiotic relationship XDDDDD
I'm so glad somebody is talking about this. It's one of my favorite anime this season but everybody sort of dismissed it because it is admittedly really weird but it is super fun and really good in general.

I haven't seen Spirited Away, but i did a bit of research after i saw your comment and my best guess would be that No-face is based on the noppera-bō, a yokai that resembles a human with no face.

For Yokai Watchers why not do a video on Yuko from XXX Holic and Tsubasa Resevior Chronicles. I know she's not a Yokai herself( I think I could be wrong) but her interactions and abilities are very Yokai-ish.

The more you look into folklore and legends, the more you find common or shared ideas between cultures. Foxes and crows are are great examples that transcend regions.
I'm so happy you covered Sarazanmai! When I watched the first couple of episodes I was thinking 'what the hell am I watching?' but quickly I really started to enjoy the weirdness and it my well be my favourite anime of this season.
Any chance of including links to articles to get us going on more research in future videos? I'm sure there are plenty who would love to look up more into these myths, & could use a hand in where to start, even just the spelling of the Yokai name's in the description would be a good start. As always LOVE the video & look forward to more of them.

That could explain why Dendy from OK KO doesn't seem to understand human expressions like emotion. Some OK KO fans have played around with the idea that she could be autistic, but Potterheads have done the same thing with Newt Scamander, and neither of them have been confirmed to be such. (though it's still fun to imagine a crossover scenario where Newt and Dendy try to study eachother) She could be like GIR from Invader Zim except GIR doesn't need water in his hollow head in order to function. With the robot interpretation in mind, I can imagine ancient astronaut theorists suggesting that kappas, their equivalents/counterparts (such as grindylows) and similar mystical creatures were experimental stealth-class droids deployed either to test their enemy-neutralizing capabilities on earthlings Terminator style, or just to try and retrieve poop samples straight from earthlings' colons.
Hey Gaijin, I highly recommend you read Nagasarete Airantou by Takeshi Fujishiro. It's a simple harem, comedy, fantasy(Pretty fan-service-y) manga series and it even has it's own short anime(26 ep). Without spoiling the story, this series does reference old Japanese culture, myths, and yes, it even has Yokai. Trust me, you won't be disappointed.

Damn... I was just researching about the kawauso because I have a copy of 100 Demons Night Parade, and the idea of a 3rd transforming animal Yokai besides Kitsunes and Tanukis fascinated me. And also because they're just dorks when compared to the other two. And by dork, I meant they sometimes stole fishes instead of performing 1st degree murder. And even sometimes their magical voice-changing ability will straight-up 'malfunction', which basically made them sound like that they have some weird accents.
I saw a pineal shape there! The Mani Ju (bottom half) had the shape (the name escapes me atm) I suspect another possible correspondence, in the pineal gland: The shape of the gland resembles a pine cone from which it derived its name. I’d be remiss to not mention, the Ajna Chakra... but I’ll stop there so I don’t get spirited away with connections. Had to pause & throw my two cents as I was just reading about that yesterday. hey, speaking of games avalible on steam that involve Yokai characters, if you haven't already checked it out, i recommend you taking a look at "Onigiri" on steam. no thats not a typo, thats literally how its spelled. I'm not going to spoil it for those who are interested in checking out this title (which the Nintendo Switch and Steam versions have cross platform gameplay going on for) - But i will say this. the name "Onigiri" IS a pun in and of itself, because there's "onigiri" - the rice ball food made into those little triangles - and then there's the two actual words that make up the pun - those being "Oni" and "Giri". Oni as you know is a ogre or troll like type of yokai; and then the concept of "Giri" - which is "to serve one's superiors with a self-sacrificing devotion" (ACCORDING TO WIKI) Though i personally always thought it was more like being honor-bounded to complete one's responsibilities or obligations of other sorts. And i think i've already given away too much info on the plot of the game's main story by explaining this title's Name pun. When ya got a chance, you should really give it a look over in depth. you being more knowledgeable then myself on yokai as a whole, maybe you can tell me more on how many of the yokai in this game are accurate to their sources @Gaijin Goombah Media
What does Little G say during the summoning? I know the last part: “kyu-kyu nyo ritsu ryo” which I understand is something along the lines of “come forth at once”. At least, that’s what I got from Twin Star Exorcists.

Interesting how common the theme of alluring beings that draw people into the water and drown them. The Kushtaka of the Tligit and Tsimshian peoples folk stories (Pacific North West peoples) have similar otter-shapeshifters, though some of their stories paint them as helpful rather than predatory. Mermaids, Sirens, Nisses (Norse mythology, for the last one), Bakahasten in Scotland (a "river horse" that stood by a river waiting for people to come along and mount it, only to immediately jump in the water and drown them, Fosse Grim...etc... Probably all meant to rationalize the myriad things that can go fatally wrong for seafarers. The fact that the otter shapeshifter idea can be found in China, Japan, etc and in Alaska is interesting - possibly indicates that this is a very old myth, going by the projected early human migration patterns across the Beringia land bridge.
Hi Gaijin, I was wondering if you could do an episode of Yokai Watchers about the dai-tengu or greater tengu. The reason why I'm asking? My favorite Pokemon, Shiftry, is based on said yokai and I want to learn a bit more about it mythological basis.
It's a goal of mine to visit Japan, mostly to visit places I see in your videos. What if you did a special video about visiting Japan for beginners? Suggestions about attractions, temples, restaurants, stuff like that. Hole in the wall places you may blink and miss, such as Ge Ge Ge's creator's home.

My goodness, kamauso are relentless and thirsty, in more ways than one, but kappa are no strangers to malevolent portrayals in early Japanese legends either. I forget exactly which manga it was, but in the author's comments of one he theorized that kappa are how the Japanese saw Jesuit missionaries and cited similarities: the hairstyle, the penchant for "drowning" people (though I'm not sure if Jesuits ever practiced immersive baptism), and their taste for human flesh (due to the same misunderstanding of communion that the Romans did).
Hm, given the historical contact between the Japanese and the Ainu and the indigenous people of the Aleutian islands, I wonder how much of a cultural link there might be between the kawauso and the kushtaka ("land otter men") of Alaska.
Makes sense. Yokai, like many other things, are used as an explinations for what was unexplainable. Turning into beautiful women to kill men might have been a stab at why men were unexplainably dying in a particular place under particular circumstances. Much like people disappearing in swamps because they saw 'strange lights' creating tales of Will-o-wisps.
Wait, so otters in folklore get the shape-shifter schtick? Keppi was the one really changing shapes in this anime. The evil singing lab-coated shadow otter seemed dissapointingly grounded in comparison.

The more you look into folklore and legends, the more you find common or shared ideas between cultures.
Foxes and crows are are great examples that transcend regions.
There's a lot of similarities throughout cultures.

Think about it. Liquid fuel source, hard carapace, three exhaust ports for letting out gas.
That could explain why Dendy from OK KO doesn't seem to understand human expressions like emotion. Some OK KO fans have played around with the idea that she could be autistic, but Potterheads have done the same thing with Newt Scamander, and neither of them have been confirmed to be such. (though it's still fun to imagine a crossover scenario where Newt and Dendy try to study eachother) She could be like GIR from Invader Zim except GIR doesn't need water in his hollow head in order to function.
With the robot interpretation in mind, I can imagine ancient astronaut theorists suggesting that kappas, their equivalents/counterparts (such as grindylows) and similar mystical creatures were experimental stealth-class droids deployed either to test their enemy-neutralizing capabilities on earthlings Terminator style, or just to try and retrieve poop samples straight from earthlings' colons.

Hey Gaijin, I highly recommend you read Nagasarete Airantou by Takeshi Fujishiro. It's a simple harem, comedy, fantasy(Pretty fan-service-y) manga series and it even has it's own short anime(26 ep). Without spoiling the story, this series does reference old Japanese culture, myths, and yes, it even has Yokai. Trust me, you won't be disappointed.

Damn... I was just researching about the kawauso because I have a copy of 100 Demons Night Parade, and the idea of a 3rd transforming animal Yokai besides Kitsunes and Tanukis fascinated me. And also because they're just dorks when compared to the other two. And by dork, I meant they sometimes stole fishes instead of performing 1st degree murder. And even sometimes their magical voice-changing ability will straight-up 'malfunction', which basically made them sound like that they have some weird accents.
I saw a pineal shape there! The Mani Ju (bottom half) had the shape (the name escapes me atm)
I suspect another possible correspondence, in the pineal gland: The shape of the gland resembles a pine cone from which it derived its name. I’d be remiss to not mention, the Ajna Chakra... but I’ll stop there so I don’t get spirited away with connections. Had to pause & throw my two cents as I was just reading about that yesterday. hey, speaking of games avalible on steam that involve Yokai characters, if you haven't already checked it out, i recommend you taking a look at "Onigiri" on steam. no thats not a typo, thats literally how its spelled. I'm not going to spoil it for those who are interested in checking out this title (which the Nintendo Switch and Steam versions have cross platform gameplay going on for) - But i will say this. the name "Onigiri" IS a pun in and of itself, because there's "onigiri" - the rice ball food made into those little triangles - and then there's the two actual words that make up the pun - those being "Oni" and "Giri".
Oni as you know is a ogre or troll like type of yokai; and then the concept of "Giri" - which is "to serve one's superiors with a self-sacrificing devotion" (ACCORDING TO WIKI) Though i personally always thought it was more like being honor-bounded to complete one's responsibilities or obligations of other sorts.
And i think i've already given away too much info on the plot of the game's main story by explaining this title's Name pun.
When ya got a chance, you should really give it a look over in depth. you being more knowledgeable then myself on yokai as a whole, maybe you can tell me more on how many of the yokai in this game are accurate to their sources @Gaijin Goombah Media
What does Little G say during the summoning? I know the last part: “kyu-kyu nyo ritsu ryo” which I understand is something along the lines of “come forth at once”. At least, that’s what I got from Twin Star Exorcists.

Interesting how common the theme of alluring beings that draw people into the water and drown them. The Kushtaka of the Tligit and Tsimshian peoples folk stories (Pacific North West peoples) have similar otter-shapeshifters, though some of their stories paint them as helpful rather than predatory. Mermaids, Sirens, Nisses (Norse mythology, for the last one), Bakahasten in Scotland (a "river horse" that stood by a river waiting for people to come along and mount it, only to immediately jump in the water and drown them, Fosse Grim...etc...
Probably all meant to rationalize the myriad things that can go fatally wrong for seafarers. The fact that the otter shapeshifter idea can be found in China, Japan, etc and in Alaska is interesting - possibly indicates that this is a very old myth, going by the projected early human migration patterns across the Beringia land bridge.
Hi Gaijin, I was wondering if you could do an episode of Yokai Watchers about the dai-tengu or greater tengu. The reason why I'm asking? My favorite Pokemon, Shiftry, is based on said yokai and I want to learn a bit more about it mythological basis.
It's a goal of mine to visit Japan, mostly to visit places I see in your videos. What if you did a special video about visiting Japan for beginners? Suggestions about attractions, temples, restaurants, stuff like that. Hole in the wall places you may blink and miss, such as Ge Ge Ge's creator's home.

My goodness, kamauso are relentless and thirsty, in more ways than one, but kappa are no strangers to malevolent portrayals in early Japanese legends either. I forget exactly which manga it was, but in the author's comments of one he theorized that kappa are how the Japanese saw Jesuit missionaries and cited similarities: the hairstyle, the penchant for "drowning" people (though I'm not sure if Jesuits ever practiced immersive baptism), and their taste for human flesh (due to the same misunderstanding of communion that the Romans did).

Makes sense. Yokai, like many other things, are used as an explinations for what was unexplainable. Turning into beautiful women to kill men might have been a stab at why men were unexplainably dying in a particular place under particular circumstances. Much like people disappearing in swamps because they saw 'strange lights' creating tales of Will-o-wisps.
Wait, so otters in folklore get the shape-shifter schtick? Keppi was the one really changing shapes in this anime. The evil singing lab-coated shadow otter seemed dissapointingly grounded in comparison.
This anime was weird when I 1st watched it. If kappa target males to remove a round "organ of desire" thru their anuses, then I'd say they're going after prostates. 🤷♂️
