I have an unusual question about Kappa, is there anything in The books about Yokai about what happens to a kappa if the water in their head bowl freezers? There’s after all that whole thing of what happens if they lose the water in their head bowl but nothing about if it becomes ice. Just one of those curious questions to pops into peoples heads.

Very interesting and nice work! You got me interested in the series. By the way, about Kappa (河童/かっぱ), I think that the name, Gataro (ガタロウ/河太郎), is a specific first name for a Kappa, not the other/regional name for Kappa in general. 河太郎 can be read as Kawa-tarou, and that is one of many names for Kappa. (Kappa came from Kawa-Wappa (河童), meaning a river-child, and Kawa-tarou (河太郎) has almost same meaning.)
Whenever you bring up the fact that the only difference between Kami and Yokai is whether or not the entity is being worshiped by Humans or not, I keep remembering how in Scottish Faerie Lore, the Fae are divided into Seelie and Unseelie Courts, with the former being mostly benevolent (but still dangerous) and the latter being malevolent. Cultural parallels abound.
Yes! I want more! Also I wanted to let you know that Dead by Daylight has a new slasher an Oni, I think you'll be pleasently surprised by his backstory and powers.
Hmm, the idea of eyes = wisdom shows up in other cultures too. Odin from Norse myth makes the same deal, trading his eye for Wisdom. Then there is also the Third Eye/Wisdom Eye/Buddha Eye, the "All Seeing Eyes" of Helios, Heimdall, and Christianity/Luminati and finally Thoth, the Egyptian god of Wisdom fixing Horus' left eye. I wonder if the one leg idea shows up as well... And I think I've been watching Matpat too long because I expected you'd put a picture of the band when you said to throw "Black Eyed Peas".
The taking of limbs to receive the power of a god reminds me of a manga i once read called "Black God", where the main characters gave their body parts to gods to obtain their abilities and their assistance.

Hey Gaijin Goomba, I don’t know if you’re going to see this, but I watched In/Spectre after seeing your video about it and had a thought. Although Iwanaga’s role as the Goddess of Wisdom is to protect the balance and order between the humans and the yokai, most of the time what we see her doing is coming up with “Rational Fictions” in order to explain unusual events. That kind of reminds me about how yokai exist as personifications of / explanations for natural phenomena. Do you think that that might be a topic worth investigating?
So are there any more cultures with deities who became super wise after losing an eye, or can tactical toga urban fantasy writers hold off on Athena with an eyepatch?

I really hope we get more episodes on this series.
Speaking of Kappa, do you think you can do a video on Dendy from OK KO? Please?
Great video and Gaijin Goombah for witch ninja can you do both Snake eyes and storm shadow please
Solid vid. Was nice to learn a bit more
The girl is a cute but sassy and confident. Its just so refreshing from the usual moe blob archetypes-you know that feeling that she just exists to get YOUR rocks off. The girl just feels like a real fucking person with agency. In fact I'm seeing a significant improvement in the writing of anime and manga recently. People that grew up with the usual tired tropes also felt my fatigue and began actually improving on it and evolving the genre.
The romance between them actually gets way better. And by better, I mean hilarious
When it comes to the Hyosube, it reminds me of the hormone monster from Big mouth, the difference is, there's no horn.
Odin from Norse mythology follows the one eyed story of great wisdom. He sacrificed his eye to a witch to look into a well holding great knowledge
GaijinHunter has started doing videos on Touhou, breaking down the games and music. With that being said, how about doing some videos talking about the endless supply of yokai creatures from the franchise?
I thought the "one eye = wisdom" was a reference to the multitude of cultures where a deity gained wisdom by losing an eye (Wodin of Norse myth, for example)
This was a really great episode man :D
Oh I see the eye of providence in Japan12:55
Could you please talk about Toilet Bound Hanako Kun next. It’s right up your alley with Japanese folklore plus the animation is just beautiful
Also Odin sacrificed his right eye for power and knowledge. :)
That sounds right up your alley.
That sacrificing eye for wisdom is 1 to 1 like Odin from Norse mythology.
Gaijin doing an episode on Kyokou Suiri! Consider my day made.
In/Spectre is one of the best of the new season. Change my mind.
to think this show would get so good with it's references
I just started watching this show and I'm STUCK.
odin comes to mind about sacrificing an eye to gain wisdom i heard in one of his fables in others he loses it to fenrir
Yeah it's slow in the beginning, but it picks up after showing the yokai
Is there anything about the eating yokai thing. Because it seems like something I've heard about before, tanuki nabe aside.
1:59 - Well that's boring.
2:12: - More boring.
2:25 - Bored...
2:37 - Ah! Here we go.
In all honesty, I'm a little curious about this series now, myself.
So are there any more cultures with deities who became super wise after losing an eye, or can tactical toga urban fantasy writers hold off on Athena with an eyepatch?
you should talk about battle rabbits. it's a older manga only series about rabbit people from the moon
Holy crap, now I understand scarecrows in OoT and MM!
