  • I've decided to refit the petrol engine to my 1989 Talbot Express Motor Home and enlisted the help of Cork Engine Centre to machine the face of the leaking exhaust manifold from the camper van. I'm hoping to use this as a towing vehicle later in the year so I've been doing little bits of work on it between other projects recently in order to return it to the road.

We've had two of these manifolds now and both are shrunk - the ports don't line up and it just keeps blowing gaskets.

Looks to be the old Peugeot XM 1.8 OHV engine from the 504.

It's actually the Peugeot 2.0 XN1 engine. Dead reliable.

hi, I've done very little mechanicing and have never had the opportunity to replace a gasket. Can you tell me what the paste was that you put on the gasket and why you used it...regards rich

Would it be best to use a Carbide scraper on those exhaust manifold flat sections in the engine block? or a knife blade like you did?

Do you need to use any thread lock when you put those studs back into the engine block, for the exhaust manifold?

It might be a good idea actually. I'm probably reluctant in case I have to take it apart again.
