    This was an excellent video. Thank you for putting this together. I found one of these for a great price and I think it's the perfect synth for me. It's small and clunky but it sounds like everything I loved about PlayStation 1 era soundtracks. I hear Silent Hill and Metal Gear Solid sounds ALL over this thing.

    Enjoyed the video! Agree with others, the multi-function button combinations are not an intuitive process for a sequencer, but at least Roland made the effort. I had a JD 990; it remains the only synth I regret selling. JD-08 has intrigued me since launch. Thank you for providing content on this unit.

      @@mr_floydst Indeed! I know they certainly have their flaws (the JD-08's controls being small even by Boutique standards, the JX-08 not sounding quite like a JX-8P, no decent way to manage patches, or viewing parameters for existing patches etc.), but they are super powerful considering their size. The voice count, bi-timbrality, extensive onboard effects and a powerful (albeit a bit of work to navigate) sequencer, they're awesome little devices.
      Thanks for the informative video! One other little function that I don't think was covered in the video was being able to alter the note length on the sequences (not sure if this is recorded like the velocity when input from an external keyboard), but it can be changed in the sequence settings (I think on a per note basis too). I imagine it's handy for recording chord progressions to play over.

    I bought used JD-08 some month ago and didn't have time to dig through manual. I finally know how to record sequence live so thanks for Your video :) I'm still trying to figure out how to setup that synth to play dawless. I already made setup in pedalboard MIDI controller (Morningstar MC6) and can switch patches on both parts. Right now I'm using Keystep to sequence bass on B part while playing pads or lead on part A. I was thinking about using JD-08 inetrnal sequencer for bass so I could freed sequencer for some other device (Volca Bass or Keys). So the question is, is there a way to change sequencer rate externally ?

    Thanks! Your content on this synth has been invaluable Floyd, please make a couple more sound design explorations on it if you could! I’m fascinated by this machine.
    One needlessly drawn out question if I may, how do you handle (or how does the unit handle) the fader sharing aspect in the envelopes once you press the type button to tweak something or other in a performance? For example once you set a value on a fader in TVA (let’s say T1 in TVA at 50%) and want Pitch envelope T1 to be in 0%, does the sound abruptly jump or does the value gradually goes to the current fader position once you move it? Is there a setting in the menu for this?
    Sorry if it’s poorly worded and convoluted, my english grammar is a bit poor.
    I’ve seen all the videos I can but haven’t really seen someone moving the faders and switching ENV types while playing or sequencing.
    Thanks in part to your videos I just purchased one and can’t wait to dig in! It’s gonna take a while while I import it to my country but I’m absorbing all the info I can

    The Boutique machines sound great, yet have drawbacks as well. One is polyphony and the other is size (too small for realtime parameter editing).

      Also, they have a set of macro sliders that are longer than the others. They stand in for the last UI element you used, allowing for "precise enough" adjustments.

    Hello,
    I’m new to these devices and I don’t know the jargon, to properly express myself, so please bear with me. The way I understand the JD-08’s sound building capabilities is, that the sounds [patches] you can choose to play are made up of, one to four tones. So , you can choose from the 108 patches within the JD-08 to create new patches, by stacking these patches [from 2 to 4, or just 1 patch], right? Ok, but say you choose two patches from the 108 patches available, and you choose one named SANDWICH and the other is named AUTUMN. Now let’s say that SANDWICH is made up of these 3 tones: bread, ham, cheese and AUTUMN is made up of these 4 tones: tree, leaves, wind, rain. Now my question is: Can you use a tone [s] from SANDWICH, let’s say: bread and mix it with two tones from AUTUMN, let’s say: rain and winds? Or in other words, are JUST the tones [individually] available for you to play around with, or is it that ONLY the patches are available for you to stack/mix/manipulate together? Please clarify. Thank you kindly

    • @mr_floydst
      @mr_floydst  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Max, thanks for watching.
      Your sandwich analogy is great, so let's roll with that.
      So, in these terms, a PATCH would be a complete sandwich. As you correctly pointed out, a sandwich can be made from up to four ingredients.
      The JD-08 has (if I remember correctly) 256 "ingredients" on offer, these are called waves. They're sampled sounds.
      You can choose any 4 of these 256 ingredients to create your sandwich. ;-)
      Once that is done, you can go and create another sandwich. In that terms, the JD-08 has storage space for 256 sandwiches :-)
      You can then layer 2 patches (sandwiches) for extra phat sounds.

    • @maxwarfield6699
      @maxwarfield6699 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mr_floydst So, what we might refer to as the ingredients [in the sandwich] ARE indeed available, and they’re called: Waves. Ok, I didn’t know that [or I somehow missed that bit of info]. I was under the impression that only the “sandwiches” were available, for stacking… Ok then, that seems like a lot of possibilities, to me. Thank you for replying, I do appreciate it. Cheers!
