D max is a 4cylander vs ford is a v8(or more) - double the rego costs in qld? the boat your towing would give most 4 cylinder trucks a hard time. Also is the $100k more cost worth it for towing truck? Maybe if you are working the ford for a living towing other stuff

Love the content. I’m here in the US and drive a similar ford except with 35” tires. The newer diesels are amazing. Unloaded highway consumption is about 20mpg or about 12L/100km. It’ll do about 15 mpg or 15L/km towing heavy. So your consumption with that full kit is pretty reasonable. As an aside, there is a great company here called built right industries that makes a dash mount that fits that cubby on the upper dash. Great place to mount cameras, radios, phones, etc.

Our F250 ran around aus including quite a bit in sand down to 15psi in central aus towing a 4t bushtracker and we averaged 16.5kpl over 37,000kms for the trip.
Only upgrades were cold induction and easy right foot!
We stayed off freeways etc and sat on 80kph max on secondary roads where we could. She had 600hp to use when we needed it.
Ps Simon would be happy you filled his tank!

As soon as I saw this competition, I bought some tickets! I had little doubt that the Rameater would NOT be a disgusting fuel hog, especially when towing, compared to other vehicles. I am glad that Jason made this video to prove the point. He has even made the comment somewhere that this truck uses less fuel than his 200 series Land Cruiser.

  • @davidpeterson3147

Here in the US we measure by Miles per gallon and my F350 (which is the next step up) runs around 21mpg empty (11.2L/100KM per google conversion) and I have pulled loads as high as 73,000lbs (33,112KG) around the same fuel economy as you got with the boat. So they are in fact pretty efficient for their size.

interesting comparison. One thing i’m wondering is how similar the driving technique was. if i e.g. leave cruise control on while towing…. way more fuel (which is a bad idea with a big load anyway).

Testing fuel economy accurately is hard. There's so many variables that can have an effect on the result.
Driving into the wind adds to your consumption so you need to account for that even if it's only a breeze.
Air temperature changes the power output of the engine. On a hot day you can lose 20-30hp so if you do a comparison it's more accurate if you do it on the same day at the same time traveling in the same direction.
Different fuel bowsers have different shut of mechanisms and your pump can shut off at different amounts depending on how you hold the nozzle, so if you want to compare accurately you need to control that in your tests. If you want to do this test and have high accuracy fill up at the same servo at the same bowser on both the before and after fill up.
Even the slope on the driveway at the servo can have an effect on how much goes in the tank before the pump clicks off.
Another important thing is how the car is driven, we all know a lead foot chews the gas.
Many people when talking about fuel economy they think it relates mostly to the engine, which it probably does but aerodynamics is a big factor too.
Raising the car kills the aerodynamics and so does light Bars, roof racks, towing mirrors, wider tyres, tool boxes. So even though we might have the same car and same engine out of the factory as soon as we start doing mods they become different cars.
What I've found over time with different cars is fuel economy depends less on engine size and more on the gross vehicle mass.
If I towed 2 tonnes behind a corolla and 500kg behind a LandCruiser they would both have a similar gvm and surprisingly they would have a similar fuel usage too.

  • @aslkdfjhg
    @aslkdfjhg 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

On the highway most of the 'work done' is used to overcome aerodynamic drag. Engine capacity and weight are more of a concern for lower speeds where you are accelerating and decelerating.
A car and 500kg trailer on the highway will always beat a car with even 75kg on the roof. This is why Prados and 200 series often get similar figures with barwork attached.
If you're going on a road trip, consider a small trailer instead of putting it all onto the roof.

  • @copuis

i mean, 18l/100km, not great great in the over all scheme of thing
however, that said, mixed driving (as that wasnt all highway)
and for such a kitted out, big rig, while towing, thats fairly good, (im sure that removing the rooftop tent, cleaning up the aero around the front etc etc, and removing the boat, would all help a heap if it were a daily)

Yes but how do they go without towing anything. That's where you'd see the bigger difference in every day driving between the f250 and dmax.

As you said , dmax must work harder as smaller motor , where F truck more power bigger engine... Very interesting results...but technology is getting much better

My std 17 mod Dmax doesn't use more than 11 lit per 100km towing anything anywhere, I suggest you run the std factory tunes without all the crap mods

I have a 2017 Hilux with very similar mods on 33inch all terrains. I tow a much bigger Quintrex most weekends and average 13litres per 100kms and I have a very heavy right foot.....makes me very happy with the Toyota but hey still wouldn't mind owning that Ford👌

2015 Colorado with 32 ATs, roof rack etc…13 towing a forward fold camper trailer. 19 from the rameater sounds about right, 18 from the DMax is rubbish

Maybe if something is a give away they shouldn't complain and if they cant afford the fuel sell it buy a smaller ute and you'll have fuel money. If i win it i couldn't care about the fuel haha id drive it everywhere in Australia.
