    _List of all combinations and their worth_
    NB: There are many variations!
    5 brights: 10 points
    4 brights without rainman: 8 points
    4 brights with rainman: 7 points
    3 brights without rainman: 5 points
    NB: the 4 combinations above are mutually exclusive of course
    Cherry blossom viewing: 5 points
    Moon viewing: 5 points
    Boar, deer, butterflies: 6 points
    3 poetry ribbons: 6 points
    3 blue ribbons: 6 points
    5 animals: 1 point + 1 point for each additional animal
    5 ribbons: 1 point + 1 point for each additional ribbon
    10 normal cards: 1 point + 1 point for each additional card
    Mulitplicators:
    Your opponent made Koi-Koi during this round -> x2
    You gathered 7 base points or more -> x2
    Both those criteria -> x4
    Example: your opponent made Koi-Koi and then you get Moon viewing. You score 5 x2 = 10 points.
    Example 2: you made the 3 blue ribbons as well as the 3 poetry ribbons, and you have no additional ribbon. You count 6 for Blue ribbons + 6 for Poetry ribbons + 2 for having 6 ribbons = 14. Your opponent didn't Koi-Koi so you score 14 x2 = 28 points.

      Is the 5 ribbons combination also valid with poetry ribbons (e.g. 1 poetry ribbon, 4 ribbons)?

    • @shirou9790
      @shirou9790 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@julianleucht413 yes any ribbon--poetry, blue or plain--counts towards it. you can even stack it with the poetry ribbons and/or blue ribbons combination if you have the 3 poetry/blue ribbons and 2 or more other ribbons for example.

      Me too. I actually have a traditional hanafuda set that I brought back from Japan a good four years ago. The prospect of finally being able to learn how to play the game (and have easy access to Nine Man Morris, thanks Assassin's Creed III) sold me on this compilation. And now I learned that it's almost half as difficult as the infernal Japanese language. At least Shogi is kind of fun.

    • @crimsonarrow
      @crimsonarrow 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I can't believe they put in labels for Mahjong and they didn't put the months into the design of these cards. This is much harder to memorise than Mahjong.

    • @albatross1688
      @albatross1688 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@crimsonarrow That would have been really helpful, yeah. This version of the game is still infinitely more playable than my traditional set, and it looks more or less identical (maybe I'll try comparing the cards in the game with mine side-by-side to confirm just how identical). But, I guess I'll never be able to teach my friends how to play koi-koi.

    • @crimsonarrow
      @crimsonarrow 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@albatross1688 I saw on Google Images there is a set where they have number labels for the months and also a "bright" symbol in Kanji on certain cards. I think that would definitely be a nice set to play with friends.

    Learned this from clubhouse games. A fantastic way to learn the game because it allows you to play without having to memorize a bunch of things or having to check a reference sheet every five seconds.
    There is one tule that made me get a physical deck though was that of the winner going first. I really hate that because it allows for one player to steamroll the other and it usually means that one player is having a great time and the other is having a miserable time.
    I have been trying it out with my brother and it seems to be working well. It does take away a little bit of the risk of koi-koing because, even if you loose, you would start the next round. But I find that to be a small price to be for closer matches where everyone is having fun.

    So when you get your matches and put on the table, is there a particular order of pile? Like one pile is the "Bright", another is the "animals", "plain cards", etc. So how do you allocate your points because I think if you have 2 5 point cards, it doesn't necessarily mean you that number of points. Can someone help clarify the scoring system to me? I have the rest of the rules down, but the scoring system is a bit challenging to me.

      You can organize your (partial) sets in front of you in any way you want, since some cards have the potential to be used in multiple different combinations. As soon as you are able to form any one of those sets, you score the established number of points that it's worth (unless you decide to call koi-koi). Here's a list of the sets and the scores they're worth: www.gamedesign.jp/flash/hanafuda/rule_e.html
      Hope this helps!

    I tried buying Hanafuda cards once, but when I went to the ATM machine the LCD display was broken and I forgot my PIN number, so I went home and read some DC comics in PDF format.
