Good day folks! Answering to your requests, I just uploaded a new video where I talk about where you can buy the best hanafuda cards! I also teach you how to craft your own hanafuda, provide you with links to the cheat cards and original cards and ALSO include some medieval hanafuda designs I made myself (all for free!). Check it out here: th-cam.com/video/9HAGpuzAvWE/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=AncientGaming It took some time xD, it is a video I have been wanting to do for a long time now, but I wanted to bring you some other cool games from other countries and cultures before. Feel free to suggest the next game you would like to see in the channel ;)
Thank you :)! There are indeed great games in Japan with a great history behind them. I can't wait to do a video about shogi and the e-awase inspired karuta
@@ancientgaming4698 Thank you very much for your reply! Some ancient games are still very popular. And if you become a professional, you can make a lot of money ;) Shogi, Igo and Hyakunin-isshu Karuta are these good examples. I look forward to watching your next video;) ありがとうございます!
Hello everyone! I've received messages from many of you asking me where you can get hanafuda cards, so I felt like giving you a quick update. The short answer is Amazon, eBay, Aliexpress, etc., but if you really want to go out of your way to buy top quality hanafuda, I will tell you how in one of my next videos. I'm currently in vacation in my home country and my equipment is in Sweden, but I have some videos in the making, so you won't have to wait too long :)
IF I could like this video twice I would. This is an amazing historical insight. Thank you so much for sharing this. I will make sure to teach this to my daughter.

I am currently preparing a video about how to make your own hanafuda cards, with the designs you see in the video and some things more, perhaps that is also a fun activity to do in family!

@@ancientgaming4698 im kinda confused, in all the sites im reading there are no variants (official at least) that let you get 20 points or 15 points? so for example having 5 light cards gives you 10 points? im so confused???
The history is so cool. I very recently learned of this game because of all things another card game I play that's not hanafuda. And I'm falling in love with it.
Poker and Koi Koi are the only two gambling games Yakuza 2 refuses to assign you an instant win item for. Luckily I know poker but this game feels like learning poker as a blind man, so I'm especially thankful for this video.
I first learnt about this game from the Japanese movie Summer Wars, where the game plays a crucial part in the plot. Glad to learn how it is played, thanks.
You seem like someone I'd get along with I too have always had a fascination in the ancient games and how they've evolved throughout history. I'm enjoying the videos keep up the great work.
I didn't go into detail with komatsufuda as I plan on doing a video exclusively about Oicho-Kabu and yakuza gambling, as komatsufuda was more typically used in that game by the gangsters. Before that though I have other games I'd like to show you guys, some of them Japanese as well :)
I am just learning to play Hanafuda. I would oftently find the game in video games but had no idea how to play. Now I'm learning and I am having fun. Now, I need to remember all the patterns you can form to get points and those are a little hard to remember.
Very fascinating history behind Hanafuda cards. One character I know of besides Mario who is associated with Hanafuda cards is Genjuro Kibagami from Samurai Showdown, as he often references the cards in some of his attacks.
I was looking for gifts and found hanafuda cards (was looking for playing cards with Japanese art on them) on Amazon I was intrigued and want to learn how to play 😀 this is so interesting.
What is it with Japan and card/board games that practically require a cheat sheet? They took Mahjong and made Riichi Mahjong, and then this. Both of these games can't actually be fully comprehended without cheat sheets or an insane amount of experience.
i still don't know how to play mahjong but koi koi takes just a couple games looking at a sheet of the different hands and then you got it, it's so much simpler than it seems at first. i think learning in a game is probably easier than learning w physical cards, there are a couple of mobile apps, clubhouse games on the switch, or if you really wanna have fun get one of the yakuza/judgment games. you'll have it down in no time at all
Thank you very much :) I really appreciate that. I will be releasing the next video later today or tomorrow. I don't speak Japanese by the way, but I'm a great admirer of Japan's culture
What kind of deck are the Hanafuda cards in the thumbnail? I got some of those recently, but the website didn't specify the deck? Also, what are the cards in the thick black frame behind you called? They look interesting. Awesome video, man. Very informative.
Hi Nicholas! Thank you very much :D. The hanafuda cards you see in the thumbnail are a pre-ww2 Nintendo design. As for the other cards you see in the background, those are known as uta-garura or uta-karuta (literally "poetry cards", the word karuta is basically how a Japanese would typically say the Spanish and Portuguese word for card: "carta". I intend to cover them in another video, they do have an interesting history behind them as well :)
Ebay, or Amazon (either US or the Japanese version, which can be switched to English). Do also search under Hwatu (as well as Hanafuda) as that is what the Koreans call them, and their sets are usually cheaper. The "ultimate" luxury set is Nintendo's "daitouryou" set, which has Napoleon on the front. Watch out for ripoff prices, though, and shop around before you buy! For Korean cards, you shouldn't pay much more than $8 on Ebay - that is probably your best bet.
It depends a lot also on how long of a game you are playing. Whenever I play 12 rounds and I am losing by a bunch half through the game I just go bananas with the koikois hahahaha
Left side of the screen. What game is that? I used to play it in Japan 40 years ago and can't remember it or the rules, just that I played it and enjoyed it.
Hey there. Where did you get the cards that were shown off in the how to play section of your video? They would be perfect for teaching my group how to play.
Hello! I crafted the ones of the video, so they are unfortunately not available for purchase at the moment. I do plan though on releasing a Print and Play video in the near future, along with some further resources for hanafuda :)
Hey Kevin 😁 as far as I know there is not, but I made a video about different options for buying hanafuda cards and uploaded the pngs with the tips to my webpage free for personal use. You can find the video in my channel, it's called "the best hanafuda"

However, I'm currently working on my own hanafuda cards and, since more people asked me where to get them, I will upload a short video or update with that kind of information as soon as I get back from vacation :)
