Hey Carol, if you watch the Dylan movie/doc, "Rolling Thunder Review", while on the Canadian leg of the tour Dylan's gang of musicians stop in Lightfoot's house and do some jamming. It's there that Joni Mitchell first plays "Coyote" which she wrote on the tour about Sam Shepherd who was hitting on her. Lightfoot playing host just taking it all in.

Harri this song is written about his then girlfriend Cathy Smith, one of his back up singers, who was largely responsible for the breakup of his first marriage. She was a real party girl and would often take off for the city to “party” leaving him working on his songwriting at home. She was very untrustworthy. She is the one responsible for the death of actor/comedian John Belushi when she overdosed him with a heroin/cocaine injection. She was sent to prison . Served her time, and I believe passed away a while ago.
Gordon went to see her shortly before she died. I'm not sure but I believe it was cancer that got her. By all accounts they had a very happy and lengthy visit. Of course Gordon had his flaws as does everyone, but I sure would love to find someone who had even half of his strength of character. That is just not something you see in people everyday. The woman basically slept with the entire band when they were together and yet he was there for her at the end. Remarkable.
My boy friend introduced me to Gordon Lightfoot back in 1970 or 1971 when I was in the Army. He also introduced me to Pink Floyd, became permanent fans of both of them. My boy friend and I went through some really strange times. I lost contact with him after he got out of the Army. Mike Elliott if you are still alive and see this, still think the world of you.
Gordon died yesterday, May 1st 2023. I grew up - and grew old - with Gordon Lightfoot. I played music professionally - mostly a very uneventful career - and something that always amazed me about Gordon what his mastery of composing, arranging, playing and recording his music. He could sit down and write out, in musical notation, every piece or riff for every instrument in every song, perfectly. Some musicians can't read or write music - and that's their gig - but Gord was a superb musician from every standpoint. More importantly, he never wrote a song that I wouldn't play again. Some songs, like The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, are so powerful that they bring tears to people's eyes even today. But I bet you could binge-listen, Hari, and never find a song you wouldn't listen to again. Some you might wish you could forget - Black Day in July, for example - but you'll never say that they're not great songs. Best, Hari. R.I.P. Gordon Lightfoot, fellow Canadian and truly a Canadian icon as well as a gift to the world. A musician's musician but also one who is still attracting new listener whose parents hadn't even been born when Gord wrote the songs. Truly. If that's not staying power, I don't know what is.
When I was in the Navy my best mate and I really bonded over this song, "...looking like a queen in a sailor's dream". Gordon is a fantastic singer, songwriter, and storyteller.
Thanks for your reaction! I always really enjoyed this song too for the groove but had no idea that he wrote it about Catherine Smith, a bad woman that he was involved with while he was married. His affair with Catherine Smith resulted in one of the most expensive divorce settlements in Canadian history at the time. Running around ( "creeping") was how Catherine Smith lived her life and she caused a lot of problems (a path a destruction) for quite a few well known musicians. She was involved with Levon Helm and all of the members of 'The Band' in the late sixties and was an influence in their song, "The Weight". She later moved on to Gordon Lightfoot in the 70's but was involved with many other musicians. Most shocking of all about Catherine's path of destruction is she later became involved with John Belushi in the 80's and ended up serving time in prison (not enough time!) for injecting the mix of heroin/cocaine into John Belushi that killed him. Catherine's story on Wikipedia is detailed and quite shocking.

I had not even known that about this song or "The Weight" until after John Belushi's death and Catherine Smith was talked about more. There is also more said about her since her death in 2020 but I am glad that she was not given much celebrity recognition when she passed away.

Hi Harri. I think I can clear up something you asked about. When Gordon says "sometimes I get felling better when I'm feeling no pain"", means he feels better about the situation when he's drunk. "Feeling no pain" is a Canadianism for being so drunk you no longer feel physical or emotional pain. I haven't heard it used outside of my country.

I wish Warner/Rhino could put together a Deluxe Edition of the Sundown album-at least a 2-CD set with alternate takes, demos and outtakes. I'd even love to hear live performances from when the album was released. Since the single it charted so well, "Carefree Highway" was the follow-up single later in the Summer. Not too shabby.

He did not fully trust her as that girlfriend had been a groupie to a rock group called "The Band". She went anyhow and he drank himself drunk imagining her with other men and wrote the song Sundown that night.
The same girlfriend many years later became a drug addict and dealer and is the same woman who sold snd did drugs with comedian John Brlushi that killed him.

I was a little kid when this song was on the radio, and I remember that I kind of liked it, but that it also creeped me out. Listening again, and reading the comments, I chuckle over my childhood misunderstandings. First, I didn't know he was saying "Sundown;" I always heard it as "Someday, you better take care," "Somedays, I think it's a sin," etc. Knowing nothing of infidelity, my young mind conjured up ghosts or witches creeping around his back stair, making him lose when he thought he was winning (that's some black magic!), somehow hurting him but not letting him know it at first because he's feeling no pain. Creepy stuff. Reading the comments and learning about Catherine Smith, I think he'd've been better off with the ghosts and witches.
Gordon has always had my heart. Really one of the last great troubadours the world will ever see…the world has turned. Music will always be what it is, nothing can change that but I fear for the present and future generations. I hope new voices appear soon. People like Gordon, Paul Simon, Neil Young, Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, James Taylor, Carol King, Joni Mitchell… all super talents, just to name a few. I miss the wonder and freshness of the past. I always thought I hated this song because I had a roommate who would sing it in the shower at 6am. Turns out you can't hate Gordon's music regardless of the circumstance.
This was written about actual events that took place in his life, between him and his wife who had recently separated. She would creep up onto the back porch and try and see what Gordon and his lady friend were doing. It got pretty scary, and she was basically stalking him. She was the mother of his children.
Late summer 1974. The solo singer/ songwriter trend of the 1970's was the greatest. Lightfoot was by trade a folk singer, who appealed to more than just the folk music audiences. the list is long of the names of male and female solo songwriter/ performances of the 1970's. And duos.
It's about alcoholism. Sundown the woman is actually booze. Sailor's Dream=wine, women, and a Royal Flush. "Getting lost in her lovin' is your first mistake" means every drunkard started w/ their very first drink.
"I think it's a shame when I get feelin' better when I'm feelin' no pain" Meaning: It's a shame the only time I feel ok is when I'm drunk. 'Feelin' no pain' is slang for being drunk.

First, I didn't know he was saying "Sundown;" I always heard it as "Someday, you better take care," "Somedays, I think it's a sin," etc. Knowing nothing of infidelity, my young mind conjured up ghosts or witches creeping around his back stair, making him lose when he thought he was winning (that's some black magic!), somehow hurting him but not letting him know it at first because he's feeling no pain. Creepy stuff.
Reading the comments and learning about Catherine Smith, I think he'd've been better off with the ghosts and witches.
Gordon has always had my heart. Really one of the last great
troubadours the world will ever see…the world has turned.
Music will always be what it is, nothing can change that but
I fear for the present and future generations. I hope new voices
appear soon. People like Gordon, Paul Simon, Neil Young,
Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, James Taylor, Carol King, Joni Mitchell…
all super talents, just to name a few. I miss the wonder and
freshness of the past. Sorry Harri, guess I’m just getting old.

At that point in Gord's life he would not have called ti alcoholism, but "feelin' no pain" was definitely about the blur of alcohol intoxication.

I always thought I hated this song because I had a roommate who would sing it in the shower at 6am. Turns out you can't hate Gordon's music regardless of the circumstance.
Check out "Four Strong Winds" by Ian & Sylvia, from thier 1986 reunion concert with Lightfoot, Emmylou and others.
This was written about actual events that took place in his life, between him and his wife who had recently separated. She would creep up onto the back porch and try and see what Gordon and his lady friend were doing. It got pretty scary, and she was basically stalking him. She was the mother of his children.

It's about alcoholism. Sundown the woman is actually booze. Sailor's Dream=wine, women, and a Royal Flush. "Getting lost in her lovin' is your first mistake" means every drunkard started w/ their very first drink.
The relationship didn't last but he got a hit song out of it.this would be the first song I every heard from him.

'Feelin' no pain' is slang for being drunk.

Just a great artist, never got the acclaim he should have
