" With Your Chrome Heart Shining" is one of the clues to the meaning of this tune. The song was an elegy for Neil Young's first car (which he nicknamed "Mort"), a 1948 Buick Roadmaster hearse that died in 1962 when its transmission blew in Blind River, Ontario.
Beautiful, Beautiful, Beautiful. This rendition, is so perfect. Love Neil, 🇨🇦 all day, anyway. 😍 His voice is so recognizable, and that harmonica, so Neil, telling it's part of the story. Made my day. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Daniel, Amazing as usual!!! Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
Neil's 1948 Buick Roadmaster hearse broke down in the town of Blind River Ontario, in 1962 . (or 1965) The mechanic that worked on it swears it was 1962. My mother was born in Blind River so I know the town very well. I know the long decline where he missed the shift and tore up the transmission. I know the repair shop that repaired it. The people in Blind River have some interesting stories about Neil. I am sure most are made up. He named the hearse Mort, short for Mortician. Always loved this song. He sang it at the closing ceremonies for the Olympics held in Canada. 😉🇨🇦💟🤴🇬🇧
I absolutely love this unplugged concert, a great watch on dvd. Neil is amazing live,. And you get Nicollete Larson and Astrid Young on backing vocals,. RIP Nicollette
🇨🇦 FYI: “”This song is actually a Tribute Song to Neil Young’s 1948 Buick Roadmaster hearse that died when its transmission blew in 1965. His car was named Mort. It talks mainly about the different travels Neil and Mort had gone through together. Them good and not so good times. The stories they shared and the wonderful memories Mort had left with Neil.”” CANADIAN ICON. 🇨🇦 This was written with Stephen Stills. and yes, his wife was Peggy. There is a fantastic video with her, Neil and others singing “Four Strong Winds” about my Province Alberta. Check it out please!!
Yes, Neil and Four Strong Winds were made for each other but he didn’t write it. I believe Ian & Sylvia did. Neil made something like $40 on his first paid gig at a young age. If I remember correctly, he then spent the entire amount, one coin at a time, playing Four Strong Winds on a juke box on that same trip.
10 years ago a concert to honor Willie Nelson was held...all star line up....Neil introduced this song to Willie by saying.." I originally wrote this about my car, but it applies to you Willie..Long May you Run!..delivered with that Neil Smirk...🤣🤣🤣
Yes, thank you Canada. I’ll never forget him singing this song at the opening ceremony when Canada last hosted the Olympics - could have been the closing ceremony, that part I have forgotten. He looked so vibrant and at ease in that cold weather.
I have been a fan of Neil's since Buffalo Springfield. He is a man who follows his muse no matter what. This accounts for his many styles. An unbelievable artist and songwriter. He is a great admirer of Bob Dylan.
one of the greatest musician storytellers i've had the pleasure of seeing on several occasions. Have seen him solo with Crazy Horse and CSN&Y he has the ability to be on stage alone with his guitar and or piano and hold the audience in the palm of his hand!
The Needle And The Damage Done is my favorite song from this Unplugged performance. There's always a bit or a lot of Danny in his performance when Neil sings about addiction. Danny Whitten RIP. Danny was Neil's rhythm guitar player. The song No More is also excellent studio, or live (acoustic).
@@Cynthia...Hope you had fun on the lake. I am sure you did. Back to the grind huh. ☹️. Heading up Friday for 2 weeks at the cabin. Very excited . 🤪👍🇨🇦
One of my very favorite Neil Young songs.....Harvest Moon being the hands down favorite. I sent this song to my best friend on her birthday, we have been friends since age 12 and actually first met in fourth grade. I won't say exactly how long that is but we both listened and cried. Being So Calif. natives this is a perfect song for our friendship, because summertime was beach time, 15th street Newport Beach, Venice Beach and Huntington Beach Pier,(get me to the surf on time). We have truly been through some things together, (the sudden death of her fiance, her mom when she was only 21, the list goes on and on.) Thanks for this one Harri.
Loved your reaction ❤ my Dad was a huge Neil Young fan, and I've been bought up listening to his music. We've been to see him live 4 times, 3 in London and once in Antwerp. Such fond memories ❤️ my Dad passed away in February this year and we played this song at his funeral, it was one of his favourites!
And I love your pop art 60’s shirt, it looks like a Peter Max painting from the 60’s, early 70’s…yes he’s married, first to the actress Carrie Snograss. His longest marriage was to pretty Pegi Young, but Neil surprised her and broke her heart in 2014, he divorced Pegi an in 2018, married his partner, Daryl Hannah & Pegi got cancer and died NYD in 2018, I think.. the chrome was on his hearse that died in 1961. Steve Stills wrote Long May You Run for Neil, who added to it, because they were young together and they played music together so fantastic ❤
Neil Young has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice but songs like this make a powerful argument for getting him into the Country Music HOF, as well. Not that it could ever happen, but man, he makes me love country style music. Neil Young could slide effortlessly into any format of music. He is a songwriter's songwriter.
I love this song that Steve Stills co-wrote with/for Neil Young and his hearse, With Your Chrome Heart Shining, I used to imagine Neil singing it about a motorcycle, but I read Shakey, the biography on Neil, it’s an amazing book, I got in 2005.
Harri, love Neil love this song one of 100ss of his, like Dylan a story telling master of his craft. Saw him in 1973 at the Glasgow Apollo but unfortunately not one of his best performances as the crowd wanted the warm up band back on as Neil was plugging his new album at the time which was "TIME FADES AWAY " and the crowd wanted to hear the hits, eventually Neil's band left the stage and he picked up an acoustic guitar and played some oldies which turned the crowd in his favour again. Incidentally, the warm up band were THE EAGLES.
I came in to hear one of my favorites from Neil, and maybe pop your bubble and tell you it's about a car he had, but I find myself really liking what you heard. Shows me where your heart lies. Beautiful reaction to a retro hit from the golden times when radio was all we knew.
My all-time favorite Neil Young song. Such a beautiful song even if it just about a car. I often don't favor live versions of songs, but this one is exceptional and brings out the best in this great song.
This song comes from Neil Young's Unplugged album and it was the soundtrack to a transatlantic relationship which ended in a lifetime connection for me. Every song on that album evokes many warm memories!
Did anyone mention that is the lovely Nicolette Larsen backing Neil up, who Harri reacted to a couple of months ago, She of "Lotta of Love" fame which was written by Neil.
One of my favourite NY songs and there are many I love (best song ever about a car). Love both this this version with Nicolette Larsen and the original, with Stephen Stills. There are a lot of great live Neil Young performances. My two favourites are Neil playing Helpless with the Band in the Last Waltz and The Needle and the Damage Done from this same Unplugged.
HBO Sports broadcast a documentary in 2001 commemerating the 1980 U.S. Olympic Hockey team; and they chose this song while the closing credits ran. Even though the original song was about a motorcycle, when it played at the end of that film it really hit home for me because in the twenty years that had passed since they won the gold medal; those players who lived, worked, sweated and played together as a family for more than a year had long gone their separate ways; which was kind of sad.
I never tire of listening to Neil Young’s beautiful voice, harmonica, and acoustic guitar. It’s just an exquisite sound. Thanks to Daniel and Harri 🌺✌️
You really should hear some of his live performances, with his band Crazy Horse. You might want to check out the 1991 live version of Cortez The Killer, Hey Hey My My, or Powder finger. They're all amazing peformances.
When I was a kid I thought it was about his dog because my dog had a chrome heart ID tag on his collar. So I thought he was imagining his dog hanging out with the Beach Boys and going surfing 😆
Thanks for another great video, that is Neil's sister Astrid on the left, backing vocals, and the great Nicollette Larson is the other singer, she did a good version of Neil's Lotta Love and made it into a big hit
probably the only guy who could play this on the grand ole Opry, get into a plane, land in sf and destroy the Fillmore with a wall of feedback and distorted guitar.
Here's a new band and song to try, Teacher Teacher by Rockpile, a band featuring Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds, who both have worthy solo material, too. A little Rockabilly for ya...
What is this performance from? There was an episode of that show "The Wonder Years" where the dad spent the whole show having problems with the family car. He'd had this thing a long time and worked on it so much, he knew it in and out, and had apparently nursed it well past its time. It finally broke down for good stranding them late for some important event or something, and I think the family walked where they were going, leaving him there fuming and still trying to start the car. I guess he'd seen keeping it running as a fatherly duty and he had been proud of it. He finally gave in and bought a new car. The end credits played this song over a tracking shot of the old dead car being towed away...I think I teared up...Heh...
Neil is a very talented musician, singer & songwriter. He was with the groups Buffalo Springfield & Crosby, Stills & Nash in the later 60's. Also had his own group with Crazy Horse for a few years. Neil went solo & has had so many great songs over the years. The albums "After The Gold Rush" & "Harvest" from the 70's are considered 2 of his best. Love these unplugged versions of his songs.
Steven Stills and Neil Young's concert tour for the "Long May You Run" album was abruptly cut short when Young quit the tour less than a month into it. Rumor has it Young made that choice when he discovered Stills was using again. The story goes, Neil relayed his decision in a note that merely read, "Steven, long May YOU run". Btw, "Midnight On The Bay" is another fine song off that album.
Harri, this is interesting - I just watched your reaction to the Beach Boys "Caroline, No," then saw this one, in which Neil mentions the Beach Boys and Caroline - what are the chances haha!
I think that might be Nicolette Larson behind him....the brunette singing backup. She had a major disco hit with "It's Gonna' Take A Lotta' Love'.....which I believe Neil Young wrote for her.
