That brings back nightmares Mike! I had two snapped on one side, and 3 on the other. Ended up carefully cutting the flanges off and drilling the things out. Cleaned up with a tap. Proper headache.

When they snap at the top of the thread, (buried deep in the hub) they are a right balls ache to drill out

Could there have been part of the bolt head or the radius between the shank and the bolt head that increased the resistance?
A touch with a grinder just to make sure.
    Or was it just corrosion?

No idea - snapped off with the long bar - not seen that before!

I'd go with it being the radius flare stopping it pull through too. Had that on the first bolt head I ever cut off (brake calliper carrier.) Was young and clueless and simply ground further into the carrier until reaching the diameter proper.

Instead of your dismantling tool in the past I have used sharpened blades out of aircooled beetle front axle

They recommend loctite 270 on them ,l don't and just put spring washers so they are easy to get out. They don't leak yet because of the gasket. l bought new spare ones with loctite already on them.

I have an idea that a lot of folk with air impacts or the new battery impacts tighten the flanges up like wheel nuts - way too much for an m10 bolt.
      Asking for trouble...
