I gotta say, I'm totally blown away by how knowledgeable Mike obviously is with the R380.
I'm quite happy to work on engines but gearboxes frighten me and Mike's pulling it apart like it's made of Lego!
Properly awesome to watch. The guy is a legend.

If you can recall I took apart an S3 box late last year - took 6 months to decide what to do with it (abandon the overdrive), and search for parts to convert it back, get another mainshaft as the old one was worn where it went in the OD.
Quite a bit of head scratching putting that back together - manual is not much help!

I cant wait for the rebuild and find out what the fault was. Great video Mike as always. Yorkshire Rob.

mike put the rear cover on the shaft to see if the oil pump seal (the tufnol one) it was very tie. I just had it on a lt77 gearbox and it needed 0.05 taken out of the seal before the shaft would move

No Parts needed. Means little cost. Fantastic.

It’s a mystery, no traces of oil, looks like it has not been filled with oil & used since it was re-assembled -ish! & stored. Looks like condensation inside possibly from being sat on a garage floor in winter.
Hope to find out the cause of stiffness when you rebuild it?

    Wifey watching the film 'Burlesque'
"Are you not interested in the strippers?"
Me: "Umm, yeah...I'm watching one now"
    Wifey "sigh...Landrover?"
    Me: "Eh...yeah"
Wifey laughing : "I love you"
    Me: "Huh....?"
    Wifey: "Never mind"

Nice video Mike. Obviously never filled with oil, possibly the builder didn't have your expertise and realised things were not correct when fully assembled and got stored in a corner. That puller tool is awesome, I used to look through the Mini workshop manual at all the Churchill service tools when I was a young apprentice at an engineering works, almost as good as Mayfair magazine. I ended up making most of them due to the amount of machinery there because of what you were allowed to do in your lunch hour, providing a machine wasn't tooled up for a production job.

I bought those tools form Dingcroft over 15 years ago as I had not seen them apart from pictures - they were very expensive!

Has it EVER had any oil in it???

Usually they pool oil onto the bench upon dissembley, and the gears would be wet with oil. Its as if its been rinsed with cleaner and stored. Or not had any oil at all after previous rebuild, id expect damage and burnt parts though ran like that.

It never ceases to amazed me, that folk build transmissions dry!
Perhaps you can see why I built my test bench for Lt230 and soon manual gearboxes

Maybe it was rebuilt without sufficient assembly lube and then stood for a long time.

The last time the synchros were replaced they forgot to fill with oil. I think other commenters have stated this as well.
It was leaking in the past thus the sealant so maybe it is possible that the oil leaked out.
