We bought a home with NO basement. I love it. We can't store stuff anymore that we don't use. I love not having another huge area to care for.

when we moved this summer, the basement was one of the hardest spaces to clear out. we moved somewhere without a basement, much smaller space.

I am in a little ranch house with no place to hide! Found some sheets to pass on , while I tidied my little linen closet. I love my towels and linens all nearly folded, all white and pretty.

Most houses in the UK don’t have basements, so we have to be really creative with storing stuff.

We purposely built a house with no basement. We do have a loft on the detached garage but it is inconvenient enough that I store things intentionally like camping gear and baby things (but now as they outgrow they get donated as we are all done with babies and that feels so good!)

I truly dislike basements. They are like the worst. Dark, cold, easy catchall...unfortunately, here in Utah it's nearly impossible to find homes without basements, and if you do, they cost the same as similar homes that ALSO have a basement!

After years of decluttering I've learned so much and its so much easier. I used to do time will tell bins for a year. I've learned that my first instinct is usually true. If i think it can go at first look, it can!!! No more later bins!

I luckily have a tidy husband and no pets or kids, so there's never too much to declutter, but I still do it on a regular basis. My tidy house gives me peace 🥰

Well I’ve never had a husband, and long time (2009) since I had a boyfriend and I never had kids - but my place is full of paper I have no idea what to do with and items that have no places to go and everything constantly goes back in the boxes the same over and over as I purge only tiny amounts where I can and the rest clear off because I always purge on my bed or living room floors.
Doesn’t help to have a 1950’s home that I moved into with a relative who since after 9 months went into hospital and never came out and since died.(Oct 2014) And nothing fits in this house because I have a father who doesn’t respect boundaries nor accepts the word “no” and hoards his items in the basement and expects me to clean up the area yet no room to move. Because his house is a hoarding zone as well. Also all my laundry has been tossed around by him because the washing machine broke down and there are now two useless machines just sitting there and the wringer is time consuming waste of time (6 hours to do one load including wringing the items) but he won’t let that go either!
I just want to throw out his stuff but he is kind of person that if you throw out his stuff he will throw out your stuff with out even asking.(he has actually thrown out my mom’s stuff even when she doesn’t throw out his stuff because it was in his way)
So I can’t even touch his things (4 wheelchairs, two hospital wheel tables, a large metal and glass topped desk, paintings and pictures galore, several microwaves I’ve used but stopped working, chairs that don’t match anything or tables, matching step stools, tools all over the place, several sewing machines, etc, yoga Mats, those locking floor mats, an old armchair my cats have since scratched while being in basement instead of having donated it, lamps, and tons more stuff)

There are specific videos on decluttering paper work on TH-cam. You can make a start with your own stuff, nevermind what your father is hoarding. Donate, toss, keep. Good luck!

I have been taking a box or two full of stuff per week to donate since the beginning of the year. I get a couple boxes from Aldi when I do my weekly grocery shopping and I have a goal to fill them by the next week, drop them off to donate, then repeat.

I absolutely want a basement, but because of tornadoes! Been in a couple, thankfully not direct hits, but helped in an town that had a huge direct hit with a dozen fatalities. Never want to live in a house without one!
That said, my basement needs decluttering!! And then a much tougher approach to what is allowed to be there.

After 2 1/2 - 3 years, working from home, I decided my home office needed a little "help." She was looking overwhelmed. So, over the past 2 weeks I've started giving her some help. I've shredded about 2 black garbage bags of OLD paperwork. My desk looks better, because I'm letting go of things, and downsizing office supplies. Starting to feel better in here. A little bit every day is going away, and it feels so good. Baby steps.

Last year was a no spend year for me. The year before was a major declutter for my whole house. This week I decluttered the cabinets in my bathrooms. I had the biggest bag of trash afterwards. Where did all that stuff come from? You are right! Decluttering is a constant battle even if you're an empty nester like my husband and me.

I found with my children to declutter just before an influx ie birthday or Christmas . Also speak to them about children not having anything I found children have good hearts and by doing this it made it their choice to donate . I think my issues of holding on came from childhood issues of my possessions being thrown and low income to replace when we were first starting out 😮

Along with my trash bag and Declutter bag, I have a ‘does not belong’ bin that I bring with me while I Declutter. It takes away the urge to relocate things because I just put it in the bin and relocate the things at the end of decluttering.

Batteries should never be put in your regular garbage. Not only are they hazardous waste (that should be taken to a designated drop-off location) but they can potentially start a fire. On the flipside, many people don't realize that safety precautions need to be taken for storing good/new batteries as well.

It’s very difficult for me to donate when I don’t have a car and too much/heavy for a taxi or bus. So it sits until I can get Canadian diabetes’ but every time they call I say “sure I have a few things for donation” I end up working and not able on my area (due to ppl stealing) to leave on my front steps, I end up not able for past 5 times to give to them! So it sits over and over me tripping over the box

Question for you Candice. Did you end up totally decluttering your basement or are you still working on it? I keep any old/stain washrags/towels for my dog for wiping her feet/body off when she comes into the house (snow/rain/mud) or for baths. Having kids definitely keeps you busy decluttering. 😉
