Goldwing GL1200 Dog-Bone Fuse Elimination. Starter Solenoid Wiring Diagram.

  • Keeping on my toes with the 1985 Honda Goldwing GL1200, I tackle a crucial maintenance task: replacing and re-wiring the old 30A dog-bone fuse with a modern automotive inline fuse. The original dog-bone fuse left me stranded at the grocery store, which is a common issue for GL1200 owners. Before the bike completely died on me, I noticed symptoms of the coils and spark plug not getting enough voltage. At higher RPMs, the bike would miss and just didn't sound as healthy and smooth as it did post-repair.

    Hey Steven and I hope you have been well. I was curious as to if you would be making an oil change video. There are other videos on how to do it but your insight would be well appreciated.

      Hey Curtis. Thank you for the recommendation. I will put it on my list. Although I just changed my oil the other day, I actually have a peculiar issue with my oil filter I plan to address in the fall and that would be a great time to review an oil change. Not much to it though. A 17 mm under the belly pan. New filter and about 3 quarts of rotella 15w 40 for me.

    Hey Steve I'm going to try that on my 82 GL 1100 the starter seems like it has a bad ground or something it's not sure what's going on with it I switched the solenoid and still had to start it with screwdriver using the post off the solenoid checking directly off my battery my voltage is 12.8 that should be plenty enough to start it correct? Keep on doing what you're doing I do love this video

      Thanks so much for the engagment David, yes 12.8 should be plenty of voltage to start the bike. Im not too familiar with the 1100s but assuming they are the same as the 1200 from a wiring standpoint I believe this upgrade would be beneficial as long as you can make a good solid connection. I just got back from an 1200 mile trip and my starter is not performing with confidence so you may see me post another video on that after I compile edit and publish the content from my trip through the Canadian rockies.
      You can also try a battery test if you have a meter for that, or just measure the battery after it has been sitting for a few days without being run or on a charger to insure its healthy and maintaining that voltage.
      if you kind of have to wiggle the steering wheel to get the starter to engage. I would recommend checking the screwed in wiring connections within the starter button housing. Mine became loose after my trip through glacier national park a few years ago. the screws holding the looped wiring connection were almost completely unscrewed.
