Goldwing GL1200 Head Gasket Replacement, Combustion Leak Test, DIY Head Resurfacing
The 1985 Honda Goldwing GL1200 Interstate provide me another opportunity to bring you guys along on the diagnosis, and replacement of the head Gasket. in this video we progress past the radiator, Timing Belts, and Valve Covers to remove the 40 year old heads. I find a special trick to remove the heads from the engine block and use a glass sanding technique to deck the heads and prepare them for installation. a few red herrings show up along the way but we progress through the smoke and get the old aluminum block Goldwing back on the road for hopefully thousands of more miles.

    I just found a 1984 Gold Wing Interstate on fb Market place with 45,000 miles, new tires, batt , windshield and it came with a trailer. The very nice young man delivered it from a couple hrs away to my door for $2400.00 The seat has come apart at the seams so I ordered a used seat from Ebay. I bought the bike for something to ride while I'm replacing the clutch on my 2000 BMW K1200 LT.

    Please dont spin the bike by the sidestand, sport bikes are only like 200-400 pounds, a 1200 goldwing easily reaches 500 without bags, 700+ with ease after bags and cages. how would you like someone to spin you like a top while your balancing on your erection. ive seen too many sidestands bent outta shape, just do a three point turn in front of the garage and back it in.

    After the lower shock bolts are removed...swing the Shocks out of the way and place a jack under the Bevel drive case....then LIFT it until the axle bolt is above the Exhaust remove the spacer from the Axle so the wheel will pull off the Bevel drive Hub...leaving the Bevel drive in place Removing the side bags makes the whole Job easier 4 Bolts each and one Electrical Plug.

    • @stevenmetzger2613
      @stevenmetzger2613 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I may try this next time. Had a really difficult time getting the wheel off with the drive in place. But I’m sure I didn’t have the axel above the exhaust. Maybe that’s the trick.

    • @jamesbalsley6135
      @jamesbalsley6135 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@stevenmetzger2613 yes ive got 2 1984 aspencades, and an apartment parking space to work in. its much easier to just remove just the left bag and bring the axle above the exhaust rather than trying to let it fall to lower than the exhaust yes itll work but youll slowly bend your exhaust headers and create a manifold leak thats way worse than the 4 screws on the left saddlebag

  • @derekr7814
    @derekr7814 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Pretty sure you dont need to remove the final drive from the swingarm bro

    • @stevenmetzger2613
      @stevenmetzger2613 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It’s defiantly possible. But the wheel does not role straight back. You need to shimmy it about two inches to the left off the hub and there are all types of clearance issues you can avoid by just removing the drive unit. Just a matter of picking your battles.

    • @jamesbalsley6135
      @jamesbalsley6135 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      your right, hes just trying to avoid removing 4 screws and a single plug, by instead bending the exhaust, undoing 4 unrelated screws, not knowing the final drive is a chore to get back in, not to mention bending the exhaust will later down the road be a 2000 dollar problem that could be avoided with 20 minutes of work.

    I also have an ‘85, planning on doing the belts soon, it was a ratty bike so I’m turning into a chopper, I think I’m gonna leave the pulley’s exposed for the look, does anyone have advice on possibly advancing or retarding the timing for better power? Or should I just run on the marks

    • @stevenmetzger2613
      @stevenmetzger2613 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The timing changes you are talking about are not done by advancing the marks. These marks keep the valves from smashing into the piston at light speed. The timing you are looking for is the timing of the ignition which could be done by messing with the pulse generator but I’m completely uneducated in how to do that.

    Very decent video, thanks very much for making it. The oil part sucks. I did that on a huge river boat once. It took me all night to clean it. I love the GL1200. For me it's just right. And good gas mileage. I have had about 10 of them about six of them Standards. Once I road a Standard I never went back. I still have two. We have to do our own work because IMHO you sorta can't trust all the shops, if you get my drift. For safety's sake if nothing else we need to do our own maintenance and upkeep. It's a worthy crazy high mileage bike. I downloaded your video and out it goes into my shop. Thanks for making it.

    the difference between a standard adaptor and a battery tender adaptor is the current limiting, turns out thats very important. a standard adaptor does not have that and i found out the hard way when i had one explode shortly after connecting it then it shoved 230v straight into the battery, main house breaker tripped, set fire to the wires that allmost set fire the the shed in the process
