I managed to get my student to talk to a psychologist but when he suggested her to see a psychiatrist for medical treatment, she refused and the psychologist became part of the group conspiring against her. There's nothing we can do until she behaves so badly that she can be forced to get treatment. it's a very distressing and dangerous

Sometimes the person in psychiatric care needs to get away from the people that made them need psychiatric care; food for thought

I have a friend with mental illness who has had a falling out with friends cause of them trying to help him and give him advice about what to do about his depression. In his case though, it's kind of the opposite. They eventually got angry and frustrated with him, and him at them, and they left him even though he still wants to be friends with them. So in essence, they became the ones who think that he's a negative part of their lives that they should stay away from, and this hurts him greatly. :(
I can understand it being hard and frustrating for normal people, because we're taught to use reasoning and logic to tackle problems, but when someone acts in an unreasonable or illogical way, we usually think poorly of them cause we dont understand why they do what they do, and that why could be something that the person in question cant communicate.

      Wow that's an interesting situation.
You're correct in that the frustration usually occurs when someone tries to help a mentally ill person but doesn't understand mental illness. It's kind of like if I tried to fix a problem with my car - I know literally nothing about cars, so if there was a leak or something and I was forced to fix it on my own, I'd just start tightening and loosening connections under the hood, then I'd get mad and probably start hitting stuff with the ratchet.
When we humans are faced with roadblocks, our natural reaction is to get angry and use aggression to overcome them. I'm sure this has some evolutionary basis. I'm picturing a guy running through the African savannah 50,000 years ago attempting to kill a wily gazelle. The guy was probably more likely to succeed when he got mad, because that aggression released chemicals in his body that focused his faculties and gave him extra energy that enabled him to catch the gazelle. But who knows, I could be way off on that haha.

Just found your content as I’m dealing with a schizophrenic mother who pushed everyone away except me, who’s hanging by a thread. Can you make a video about HOW to go about treating someone who is mentally ill or how to get them to understand that they need help?

    • @ZachGood

If someone likely needs mental health treatment but constantly refuses it, the best thing to do is contact a local mental health professional for advice. They would be able to help determine what options you can take, including whether (and how) someone can be treated.
Here's the thing, though: Sometimes, it's not possible to force someone to get help, even when they need it. In America, for example, someone can be forced to receive psychiatric care if they meet one of the following criteria:
      1) They're actively suicidal
      2) They're actively homicidal
      3) They're so impaired due to a mental illness that they are incapable of taking care of themselves
If someone experiencing a mental illness doesn't fall into one of those criteria, it's generally not possible to force them to get treatment. This is a good thing, for the most part, because it prevents us from being a society where anyone can be given forced treatment at any time for any reason. The only downside is that some people very clearly need psychiatric help but they can't be forced into treatment because their symptoms aren't severe enough (in other words, they don't meet one of the criteria I listed above). In situations when someone needs psychiatric treatment but isn't severe enough to warrant forced psychiatric treatment, there's nothing much that can be done if they refuse to get help on their own. All we can do is be nice to them and calmly encourage them to talk to a professional.

Zach Good thank you for the advice. This is what I feared, but it’s also what I suspected. The confirmation bias example you give in on of your other videos is pretty much happening right now. I guess I’ll just stay on the spectrum between 0-100 and adjust accordingly as my life moves forward. I appreciate the advice man, thank you.

A family member was taken to the hospital by the police . It was winter & she was only in a robe wandering the streets . From that local hospital she was transferred to a psychiatric hospital for a 2 week stay . She moved into a family members house & has refused to take any medication or see any doctors . She's just waiting to get her Social security check to leave . She believes her family member is part of a program to do I don't know what , there's so many stories . It's the government , people wanting body parts , attack on Christians . So she has to leave to be safe & will soon be homeless . She said she's been homeless before . She's been sick a long time . At least 20 years . I don't know how she's made it this far with the torment in her brain . She's managed to distance herself by moving & changing phone numbers . All her family want to help & live in the same state . But she has always moved farther away . We are thinking of getting legal papers so that next time she goes to the hospital she can be transferred for further treatment. Also I suggested we have a photo of her car for the police when she goes missing .

im literally scrolling through these videos trying to find out what the fuck i can do when i got denied (recently it’s hitting worse because im getting worse) therapy (my parents can’t afford to pay them) for depression, anxiety and self-harm, and suicidal tendencies. and i have no idea what the fuck to do anymore. everyone fucking says “oh we’re hear for u and we will help” but i get denied as though my issues aren’t as important? it hurts that i could kill my self any day and it could have been prevented if i “fit THE FUCKING CRITERIA” im so lost and so hurt from it, i don’t get what i need to do to get help, do i NEED to starve myself to get a small amount of help? do i need to try to kill myself so i can get help? what the hell do i need to do to be considered for support. it hurts so much that ive had this happening for 4 years and nothing has been done - I mean i was told my mum i was an attention-seeker but how? i want help for what happens in my head, not fucking sympathy that won’t do ANY good. im so done. ik nobody will read this or anything but i just needed to get that out because nothing is helping or getting better.

Having worked at a psychiatric hospital and having completed 75% of a master's degree with the intention of becoming a counselor and having a mental illness, I know from experience that there's a significant shortage of mental health treatment providers, especially for chronic conditions and especially for suburban and rural areas. You're right: All mental health providers advertise that they're ready to treat anyone who needs it, but many times when someone attempts to make an appointment, they're told that there's a 3+ month wait list or that "We don't treat that condition." It's extremely depressing.
I have a few words of advice/encouragement for you:
      1) Don't give up. Don't give up looking for treatment and don't give up on life itself. Continue searching for someone who can offer you the treatment you need. If you need to be on wait lists, get on all the wait lists while you continue searching. Something might come up sooner than expected. Also, don't give up hope. I know it's one of those bullshit things people always say because it sounds nice to say, but it's true. We humans have no idea what will occur tomorrow, so whether we're expecting the best or worst, we often are proven wrong. People sitting on top of the world think their good fortunes will never end, but many times they do; people sitting in the deepest, darkest hole think the bad times will never end, but many times they do. Life is a chaotic weather pattern that can shift at any time. Even if it's looking like it'll be raining for months or years, don't stop looking for the sun.
      2) Not all mental health providers are good at their jobs. Just like there are bad plumbers and mechanics, there are bad counselors and psychiatrists. A mental health provider who tells someone's parents that their child is "Just seeking attention" is a shitty mental health provider. Even if it were true that you're "just seeking attention," that's not where the conversation should end; it's where it should begin. Why is the person seeking attention? What's driving their behaviors? _That_ is what the provider should try to determine next.
      3) Even though emergency care is always provided - and it might seem enticing to purposefully make yourself worse just so you can be seen by a provider - it'd be unproductive and unhelpful for you to purposefully make your condition worse just so you can be seen by a counselor or psychiatrist. Don't try to make yourself even more depressed and unhealthy just so you'll be taken seriously. It might get you seen immediately and it might get you taken more seriously, but it'll be at the expense of your health. If your car needs a new engine but it'll take a few weeks, it wouldn't be helpful in the long run to cut all the wiring in your car just so the mechanic will put you at the top of the list.
      4) Spend time every day writing your thoughts out in a journal. I started doing this at 29 years old and it completely changed the way I viewed my problems (some of which I'd had for 20 years). Writing things down and reading them back to myself gave me perspective that I didn't get when I simply thought about them in my head. [Side note: I actually turned those writings into a memoir, which is available for free at my website: zachgood(dot)com/apbs.html ]
      5) Spend time researching your symptoms online at reputable websites and read some support group forums for people who are experiencing the same problems that you are. I'm not saying diagnose yourself (definitely don't do that!) - I'm just saying that knowledge is power and it might help to see that other people are experiencing the same things that you are. Knowing that you're not alone is helpful by itself.
Every problem has a cause. Every cause requires specific conditions. Conditions are prone to change. This means that every problem has a solution. You need to identify the problem and its causes so you can make changes that create the outcome you need. Hurting yourself isn't a solution; it's an escape - and an escape isn't necessary. If you ever believe that you're going to hurt yourself, call emergency services rather than following through with your plan.
Make it your goal to be the person today that you'll be thankful for in 5, 10, 25, and 50 years.

The mental health system, itself, is a good enough reason not to seek treatment. Underfunded, poorly staffed and dehumanising. I'd rather live alone with my depression than let go of what little dignity I have left to endure another moment amongst that toxic abomination.

I am very well aware of my flaws, I fucks everything up. Yet I don’t seek help because it is a sign that I can’t do shit by myself and I take it as a insult. I hate people who go “you good bro” It gets on my nerves so much. Especially in Australia. This shit didn’t happen in Russia.

First he says heart problem, then kidney failer then cancer then voices and sound but the doctor says he is physically fine and psy therapist gave a schedual of what to do every day. He followed only three days, then he cries and feels afraid to stay alone even for minutes. He does not deny he sick but says im too sick of voice, he isnt going to work regularly. I talk to him he says u r right and after one day or two he starts complaing. Now he refused the psy therapy. I dont leave him but for one month he is getting worse with sounds😥😥

They may have received bad treatment in the past (more than once.) No one believes them. When you are the one with the diagnosis and you report unethical behavior you're not believed.

The patients are not “refusing” this patients are keeping their own best interest in mind. You will still have manic symptoms regardless of whether you take meds or not. Also, many of these medications cause life threatening and debilitating side effects. Because of this, the vast majority of people on these medications become permanently disabled. Many people have lost their:jobs, homes, families, etc. because of these medications. Lastly, if you go to a mental hospital for treatment voluntarily or involuntarily it is usually put on a record. What employer do you think is going to hire someone with an involuntary hold on their record?

Its a little late but I think this was a wonderfully insightful comment. All these are relatable and were failed to be mentioned, along with the quality of the care avaliable, I've seen a dozen therapist and I find 80% have offered infferrior services especially if you elect not to be medicaded phycho therepy is just talking and if the therapist isn't helpful why go especially at the expense of paying for therepy/insurance transportation having to miss work if missing work for an appointment is even an option. At the end he mentions many people who are mentally ill isolate from everyone except others with mental illness....personally I think that people receiving help from other people that are mentally ill is a wonderful idea its better than total isolation and much like you wouldn't take parenting advice from someone without kids or other similar seneriois mental illness is something that cannot truly be completed understood until experienced, one would think those in recovery and or with understanding could/would be a great asset toward treatment.
