Hey Drew, really like your videos. I've discovered many great songs through your reactions in the past couple of months. Regarding Dream Theater, please react to The Best of Times! I feel like it is kind of underrated. It features the, in my opinion, greatest guitar solo in music history and it is 'only' 13 minutes long. :D

Okay. This song, as amazing as it is by itself, doesnt come CLOSE to how amazing it is behind the scenes. The meanings behind the lyrics. The tributes. The entire story entwined throughout the album, plus the 2 albums either side of this one. The last note being the same as the first one in both the song and the ALBUM. We could spend twice as long as the song goes for just explaining it, and I honestly HIGHLY recommend looking into it and understanding what's behind the song.
It's not just a mellow track, or a long song. Theres so much more behind it.

he song is a microcosm of the entire album Octavarium, which basically represents the cyclical nature of things. The entire album is a huge concept, even to the point of there being 8 songs, 8 musical keys, and each song begins on one key, ends on the next key, and the next song starts on that same key. The song ends with the same chords and melody as the song began. Panic attack is on this album as well and they had melodies from all the songs on the album in this song which is probably why you recognized it. The album is so complex that someone wrote a thesis explaining it.
If you're really interested, here's the link with all of the references and tie-ins that go into the album - @t
I just subbed and went through your metal reactions, and i appreciate you going in deep with these two epics, but I think you're due for a solid heavy track. You can't go wrong with any of these. The glass prison or as I am are both damn good tracks, both a bit heavier with a great into that I think you’d really dig, but their catalog is solid from top to bottom, you could really pick whatever the fuck you want and 95% of the time be blown away, but another thing that they’re known for are instrumentals, maybe It’d be a change of pace to give one of those a go, I’d recommend stream of consciousness.

Drew what I can recommend without a doubt is any song from "Awake", great album and that I see that the comments do not take much into account, it is the time where Kevin Moore was in the band and brings another focus on the compositions that was changing after he left the band, but his first three albums are spectacular and I can't stop recommending him and giving him the space they deserve. Greetings from Chile!.
    Sorry for my English :)

This song is amazing! My first reaction to this song and album caused me to buy every Dream Theater album(I had a couple of their albums before than). I dont draw lines on Dream Theater like I do on most my other favorite bands like Pink Floyd, Genesis,Rush, etc where there are certain albums or eras I could care less about. I love all Dream Theater. I could not rate their albums in order. I love the albums fans complain about as much as the ones fans embrace.

Dream Theater make so many songs with long duration with so many part changing in it.
This album introduce me to dream theater back when i was 12.
Now I'm 27. Octavarium, for me is their best long duration song.
The music, lyrics, and so many detail in this song make you feel like ure in a journey.
Damn! The closing solo and the chord transition towards the ending tells me that these guy is such a high level musician.
    Wonderful music.
    Still give me goosebumps.

These are the types of songs that blow my mind that they can write. There are so many movements all seamlessly woven together. Most people just don't get it, and rightfully so as it's not always filled with hooks. But man, if you're patient and give these types of songs multiple listens you start to realize how fucking brilliant they are as composers and musicians.

Intro done on continuum fingerboard by keyboardist Jordan Rudess .. goes on a little too long though .. “illumination theory” live would be a good next step .. only 19 minutes 😎 .. they haven been around since the late 80’s so there is plenty of material to explore .. DT is my all time favorite band

As a lifetime Dream Theater fan (first time I saw them live I was 8 years old at their Scenes from a Memory Tour with Spock's Beard in 2000) I love that you did 2 of their Opuses at first and liked them, not many people can say the same thing, it's a lot to chew for sue but shows them in their full splendor. I recommend some of their shorter tracks to get you used to them in other avenues as well:
    - Take the Time
    - Fatal Tragedy
    - As I Am
    - The Glass Prison
    - The Dark Eternal Night
    - New Millennium
    - The Mirror

Breaking All Illusions is a must. It's one of their best for sure, great balance of melodies and heaviness. I would also recommend In the Presence of Enemies Part 1 (there's also part two...when put together they amount to 20+ minutes though). Breaking All Illusions is somewhat shorter than ACOS and Octavarium.

  • @McShortFuse

This track is awesome to see performed live! I would know, since Dream Theater played it the first time I saw them live. You should check out songs like "Endless Sacrifice", "Blind Faith", "The Great Debate", "Pale Blue Dot" "At Wit's End" or " A New Beginning". They are much shorter than both Octavarium and A Change of Seasons, but still every bit as great as those two.
