Somethings that not a lot of photography channels talk about. But after watching the video I realize it's not just "bigger the better". Thanks for sharing your knowledge. This video will be useful for years!
I started to get confused when I was looking through the video record settings on my A6500 and saw 60M and 100M. I bought a SanDisk Extreme and hoped it will support it, because when I saw the specs it said: Min Write Speed: 30 MB/s. Your video really cleared this up. Thanks a lot- you put a lot of peoples worries to rest aha.
Just bought an A6300 and was bogged down with memory card information, was going to but a 300mbs one but you have saved me a fortune...thanks from a new subscriber
Came here from the subreddit. Amazing video! This covers things that are asked all the time and I hope they sticky this! Keep the great content coming!
Thanks for the video! I would say there is an advantage to buying a higher read speed card, and that's when it comes to copying the photos to your computer after shooting. You're quite correct that it has no benefit inside the camera, but cutting a half hour off your photo transfer time might mean a lot to some people's work flow.
Thanks! Just ordered an a6500 today. After watching your video I canceled my order for a faster card and went with Sandisk Extreme for about half the price.
just saved me, I was about to order one of those new 300mb read speed cards, no way I would have benefitted, I will just get a higher capacity card for less money now. I had no idea of the 35MB limit
Man I was just trying to figure out the same thing. I have been using the sandisk extreme pro 95MB/s class 3 SDXC card and was about to switch to the 300 MB/s card because i seen somebody on a video say that i was not getting the full 4k out of my Sony AX100.
I used to stash SD cards everywhere too to ensure I always had one as I kept leaving them in card readers. Now I always leave the door open on my camera until I put the SD card back and I haven't forgotten since.
Thank you so so so much for this video. It really is helping me out. Funny that something as basic as a memory card gets complicated with all the labeling. Really knowledgable! Thanks so much!
thanks for the video. Just traded up to a A6400 from a Cannon 700d. the memory card is only for HD. I was going to buy a extreme V3 3 card 128mb for £20, but and I am glad I watched your video all the way through...I have a Go Hero 7 and use a sandisk micro 128 V3 which films 4k in mp4 and H-Vec. So if I am picking this up right I can pop the micro into the adaptor and use it on the A6400 ? If This is true then once again thank you for such a informative video and very much appreciated. Subscribed as well.
It was an eye opener for me to learn the 35 MB limit. So how does it cope with hi-burst raw shooting which it claims in a6500 to be around 200 shots before it slows down below the 9fps rate., where one raw pic usually is around 24-25 MB?
The a6500 can do about 105-ish raws or a bit over 200 JPGs at 11fps before the buffer is full. At that point, the camera can only take pictures as fast as the buffer can spin them out to the card, so the rate goes way way down.
In the world of technology the word future-proofing doesnt really apply. So good advice on waiting for the prices to go down on UHS-2. Even near end of 2018 now it is still quite expensive, those ultrafast UHS-2 cards, but UHS-3 standard is already out...
some cards are 60mb/s and say they support full HD. But on a 4k camera, e.g. the Panasonic G7 or G85, the camera will not allow these cards to record 4K video, only 1080p. So do you need a card to say 4K support?
Like Sony cameras, Panasonics require a card that is at least UHS-I Class 3 in order to record 4k. If you have a card that is marked as UHS-I Class 3, but are unable to record 4k, the problem is the card (might be counterfeit). *Almost* everything I said in the video applies to Panasonics (at least the older ones) as well as Sony.
No. The adapter simply adds a tiny bit of metal so the pins physically match up, there are no additional electronics or anything, so there's no impact on speed.
How to fix unable to read sd card error in a6300 ..although same card works in another brand of camera and pc but in camera it shows the same error message and can use any features of camera and cant format it ! How to fix this ??
Can I use SanDisk extreme pro 512gb for my sony a6500? Also, On san disk extreme pro cards there is either the Roman number one or the Roman number two, what does this mean?
Using the Samsung 128GB EVO Plus, with a6300. I received this message while shooting 4k video ""writing to the memory card was not completed correctly" I formatted the brand new card in the camera. Anyone know what to do next?
Can you confirm that you have actually used Samsung U3 cards successfully with an e mount in 4k? I've tried a few with no luck. This is the first video I ve seen claiming that they actually work.
I I'm just learning about pictures & just purchased the Sony 5100 along with the SanDisk Ultra Plus, SDXC UHS-I, 64GB 80 MB/s 533X card...whew! Will this be ok for my camera?
Great video. Answered all my questions. Thought my SD card was the problem. When really its just the slow write speed on my a7rii preventing me from viewing photos immediately after.
I was told in my local wilkinsons camera shop that i need a minimum of 100mbps to shoot 4k video, but on the paper he gave me it says Extreme pro UHS -11 64 GB 280 Mbps.. Which has a low price of 100 UK pounds and can go up to 150 UK pounds.
You're getting your b - bits and B - Bytes confused, and so is the camera shop. The UHS-II version of the Extreme Pro can sustain 260 MByte/s, which equals 2080 Mbit/s... almost 20x more than what you need for these cameras. The cheaper UHS-I cards, as noted in the description, are all you need.
appreciated man, helping people out like crazy here, might be amateurs now but never know man, you might just be a part in kicking off the success of one of us
#JeffEllio-PhotonArmy, I purchased a 128GB SanDisc micro SD (UHS-I U3 C10). The problem is that although the card is fine for photography, when I try to record video (4K or 1080p) I get an error message that I should use UHS-I U3 compatible card. PLEASE HELP....I have tried to format the card on PC and in-camera but no change.
Tee New Because the ultra plus is only a U1 card, it may not work for 4k, but should work fine for 1080p. The write speed of that card is a little too close to the line so I wouldn't trust it to handle 4k reliably.
How is it possible that the card I bought, a samsung evo 128gb microSDXC class 10 U3 write speed of 90MB/s, won't record 4k or 120fps HD in my a6500? It still tells me, "cannot record in this recording setting. switch to a UHS-I U3 compatible memory card." That's what I have! What is going on?? Is it the adapter??
Yeah I'm familiar with those, and although it's a retail blister pack, I assume it can still be. I guess I'm going to have to try another one. It's frustrating though as I've seen a lot of others with the same issue. Seems these Alpha cams are picky.
Yes, and in the computer after that didn't work. I always format in the device I'm using a card in. The card has all the asked for specifications, but will not do 4k in 100m (it will do 60m), or 120fps in HD. I picked up a Sandisk Extreme Pro, and it works just fine on any setting. In fact, I found an old 16gb Panasonic card with the U3 symbol on it, tried it, and it works! It doesn't make sense, but it is what it is I guess. I'll stick to the Sandisk cards for these cameras!
Thanks for sharing Jeff.. What kind of card should I buy for sony a6300? Kindly just give me one best option which you would choose if you have a6300? thanks!
Yes. All a6400 modes are covered by v30. Note that my advice on cards has changed over time due to changes in the manufacturing landscape. Today I would suggest the Sony or ProGrade cards. The E series Sony cards are a good value option with stable performance.
No, the adapter is not intelligent, all the adapter does is make an electrical connection in the proper alignment so the pins of the microSD card match the pins of the full size SD slot. You incur no speed loss. Kinda like microusb vs USB - same wires, larger plug.
Thanks for the answer, and sorry for the dumb question. You even wrote a6300 in the Title of the video. I should have read earlier. Appreciate your time sir. Thank you!
Quite true, however, the advice was good at the time it was given. Much has changed, so I would consider Sony and ProGrade to be my recommended brands, while others have fallen by the wayside. Should I ever have time to make more videos, this is one I would update.

For A6500 can I use 128 GB cards as you mentioned details i.e uhs-1 class-3? (is it support to a6500?)
What max GB supported card the A6500?
Would it reduce the read/write speeds of the Micro SD-Card, if we have to use a Jacket/Adapter (looking like a big size memory card)?
No. The adapter simply adds a tiny bit of metal so the pins physically match up, there are no additional electronics or anything, so there's no impact on speed.
Thank you Jeff! You are great.

It was straight from the sealed packaging and directly from a supplier

i HAVE a sandisk 64gb ULTRA PLUS for 1440p or 4k, will that work on my sony a6300? please reply, some people don't, i've subscribed for a while now

So SanDisk Extreme 64GB UHS-1 CLASS 10 is okay for Sony a6400?
Make sure it has the U3 symbol on it. It may *also* have a Class 10 symbol on it, but the U3 symbol is the key. U1 is not enough for 4k video.
So is v30 good enough for 4k and slo mo on a6400 or not?
