I can't give you an exact answer to your example but I was just taught that the e ___ ana structure can also be dumped in the middle of a sentence to show an action that is 'present continuous.' i’m pretty sure it’s because when speaking if you say “ahau” fast enough it sort of becomes “au” which is why it’s now an accepted alternate use, it’s like how “going to” and “gonna” mean the same thing in english - one is just a reduced version of the other

Mōrena e hoa, e rua e rua, exactly the same - can use either one at any time.
