This isn’t a shootout between the 2020 Yamaha YZ125 and the 2020 KTM 125SX; it is an unshootout. We will give you all the same facts as in a true-to-life shootout, but 125 two-strokes differ from 250 two-strokes, 250 four-strokes or 450 four-strokes in that they serve a different master. For the most part, these three groups of bikes are purebred race bikes. They have dedicated race classes where they have a chance of winning. Not so with a 125 two-stroke. Under the AMA’s convoluted double-displacement handicapping of four-strokes, the number of 125 two-strokes with a ghost of a chance of winning anything above the 125 Novice class is almost nil. That doesn’t stop guys from trying to race them. Even without racing acceptance, 125 two-strokes have found a unique audience. They have become the go-to bike of riders who just want to have fun.If you’re riding 125s for fun and pleasure, ride a YZ125. It offers enough bang for the buck to satisfy anyone looking to have fun on one of the greatest motocross machines ever made.
If you’re racing a 125 to improve your skills, win races and not give up an iota of performance to the competition, race a KTM 125SX. It is a better race bike than the YZ125-and any attempt to make the YZ125 as fast, light and svelte as the 125SX will end up costing more than the $700 price differential.

TM actually started the blue rim thing and Yamaha copied! My last bike was a 2016 Yamaha YZ250FX and it was a blast cause I put a few thousand in engine parts, but my new TM EN300 is FAST as lightning and looks/performs better as well!!! TM for the win! Only 1500 bikes imported to the US every year - check em out if you've never seen or rode one. The engines are extremely rare, elusive, beautiful, wild - basically unicorns of moto! Lmbo

I'm 58yrs but have only been riding for around 5 yrs owning only 2 bikes, a YZ125 and an SX125, both new bikes. I'm not experienced enough to tell you which is the better bike but I can tell you that the YZ is far more resilient. The SX required constant maintenance, nuts & bolts required checking between laps where the YZ is 'ride, wash, put-away, ride again'. AB (UK)

40 years of riding mx bikes makes think it should mandatory for every rider to spend a number of races on a 125 before being allowed to race a 250 f or 450f. There would be so many better riders as a result. Theres something about four strokes that ruin moto cross for me.
Maybe its because the track I maintained was closed 100% because of 4 stroke noise. Non riders hate the sound of thumpers.

The next year everyone switched to four-strokes and it was like they were riding two doors down. We had two tracks get closed because of the sound.

@@justincoats7236 yup, because of the loud noise levels 4 stroke make, we may be at risk of losing alot of riding areas, here in Ontario Canada, loud pipes on snowmobiles are having extreme effects, property owners are closing sections of the OFSC trail system and theres no way to link the trail around these properties.
Ride unheard n leave as little destruction behind as possible is the key to our future of riding cool toys

the KZ125 engine is enbreakable, they are made in house like every Tm engine since 70'. they even made engine for 7 other brand at the time like gasgas. you get 80cc 85cc 100cc 125cc 144cc 250cc 300cc enduro/mx/supermoto. you find parts in 48h in Europe (idk for USA)

Damn, those Yamaha's must have been absolute weapons in the mid 2000s! I'm so glad that both of these companies still produce smokers, KTM pushing development and Yamaha just pushing out the same quality product year after year. I really wish Suzuki and Kawasaki did the same thing as Yamaha, fuck Honda though. Just as a company not their bikes, some of them are the most iconic in history. Still I don't see why Yamaha can't just run their 250F and 450F bikes, with the cradle from their respective smoker. Then they only need to build a second, slightly different frame. Not reproduce an entire 2nd motorcycle. The Yamaha engine is still relevant. They wouldn't need to develop it and the chassis would see development just as a side effect, with no R&D. Seems like a cheaper way to produce them, that would only benefit the smoker?
