    The anti-Android spirit of this is tedious. Any app that does not support both IOS and Android makes no sense to me.

    • @DylanODonnell
      @DylanODonnell  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I believe the initial reason was for macs superior 3D hardware and AR libraries. Android sucks to develop for.

    • @viniguez487
      @viniguez487 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      If you develop for iOS you don’t have to worry about multiple device support as all models can essentially run the same app. Android is far too fragmented to easily code the same app for let alone debug. Also, most android users don’t pay for apps and steal them by side loading from cracked app stores. It’s no fun building apps for Android.

      @crateer ปีที่แล้ว

      @@viniguez487 about device support; that's incorrect. It all depends on SDKs used. This not only applies to Android, but iOS alike. You cannot support all devices.
      Not sure why you think most Android users pirate their Apps lol, pretty bolt claim. With proper In-App purchases, you eliminate all pirating effectively, it's not hard.
      I see you are not a mobile dev haha, no offence, just letting you know :)
      But the issue is, that roughly 71% of mobile users are using Android, and roughly 27% are iOS users (src: Statista) - they are missing out on a huge market with an "iOS exclusive".
      (Coming back to the amount of devices supported, you now see, that on Android you could support way more devices to begin with :p)
      But, this all depends on their resources of course, we will see what the future brings for SkyGuide, it looks promising!

    Dylan, I just signed up for the SkyGuide Pro trial. You are right, the graphics and content library are brilliant. I am finding nebula that I never knew existed just by browsing the skies under different filter options. Pretty cool. But I think this app is no replacement for SkySafari Plus or Stellarium. This app (SkyGuide Pro) does not seem to display any gridlines or even a meridian line. It does not have telescope FOV views either. I find those functions essential for planning and field work. So my personal assessment is that SkGuide Pro is a very good complementary app (somewhat expensive) to SkySafari or Stellarium, but not quite a replacement.

NINA? ZWO ASIAir? What about capturing images? SharpCap? FireCapture? ASIAir? What do you use for stacking and processing? PixInsight? DeepSkyStacker? Luminance? I have the hardware now, and figuring that out was challenging enough. Figuring out the software looks like another 3 - 6 months research... Help?

      Fifth Star Labs-the creators-are a very small studio. One of the founders is a guy I know quite well and he is responsible for the actual software model and graphic code that’s driving the app and its visualizations. He has a very long background in planetarium/space modeling software, by the way. I know he couldn’t (and for as far as I know still can’t) invest the effort required to port this to Android. The iOS and iPadOS markets are more lucrative for developers of paid apps and developing for Apple’s ecosystem is simply way more straightforward especially when you have years if prior experience on macOS and want to do relatively high end stuff like this with a very small team.

    StarWalk (2) also has an amazing GUI. But thanks for the headsup, I'll download Skyguide now.
    Also, you're spot on with software looking like arse. That's basically 95% of all astrophotography software. Designed by incredibly smart people but with almost no design ethos. I mean, let's not talk about EQMod (and sorry, Dylan, but PHD2 also is an ugly piece of software).
    edit: okay I had a look. Very nice. Shame about the subscription model though. Is that worth it? I'm happy to buy additional features but the subscription... hmm no thanks. Also would be really nice if they could implement a basic FOV calculator to better plan a photography session, instead of finding something cool, then jumping onto a PC for Stellarium.
