    Nice video I inherited a well stablished 40 gallons with live rock and 3 clown fish, the tank has been set up close to 20 years and North Dallas Aquarium was doing biweekly maintenance with the previous owner. However it has quite a bit of apitasia on the rocks. I have started using apitasiaX but this look much more convenient and in the long run less expensive. I starting the hobby once again so I am a bit rusty since it has been quite a long time since I had a saltwater tank. Also I am the Metroplex from Sachse. Thank you for the video you have great looking tanks!!!

    Oh...so you can do this by zapping it outside of the water. That's so convenient! Everything I've been researching you have to do it from in the water. Thanks for this info.

    Absolutely beautiful! Anemones and Clownfish; two of my favs. As far as the bubbletip you refer to as "long and stringy", I must say I think it's flowing tentacles are beautiful. The flowing motion of the anemones are in great part the beauty of that tank IMHO.

    This was an absolutely fascinating video. I actually got out of saltwater keeping because of aiptasia and green hair algae that I simply could not get under control no matter what I tried.
    This has given me hope that I could go back to keeping a reef, because I loved it and miss it, I just felt I wasn’t skilled enough.

    Green laser light is absorbed by hemoglobin, that's why we use that color in the operating room . in the retina has a lot of blood vessels filled with hemoglobin and will blind you very quickly

  • @tcpdexter
    @tcpdexter 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Be aware, if the aiptatia are white or very lite in color, like those sometimes found in the overflow, the laser may have little to no affect. The same results can be observed when burning papers of different colors. Dark=quick burn. Liter=slow burn. Tried it on my hand with the beam at its widest and was able to maintain a longer contact time with my palm than with the back of my hand. That being said, it may be smart to wear a longs leaved white-T as part of laser PPE.

    • @melevsreef
      @melevsreef  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's interesting, I've never tried it on a lighter colored aiptasia. I'll have to try it. Thanks!

    Your video description says 5 miliwatts, but you meant 5 watt or 5000 miliwatts as you say in the video. I have a 3 watt and it works great. Focusing tip is the key!

    • @melevsreef
      @melevsreef  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly, that part is a little confusing to me. The specs are in the link I provided, so feel free to take a look and give me your thoughts. 5000mw is what I'm seeing. The one from 3 years ago was 1200mw.

    Hey Mark, nice video as always. I must say in my case peppermint shrimp did the job in about days. I have a 180g display and aiptasia was spreading. I first started using Red Sea's AiptasiaX but everyone I zapped seemed to multiply to 6 in the next week. I added 3 peppermint and they did about nothing. I bought another 10 (a couple of them good sized) and the next week I was Aiptasia free 🤗🤗🤗. Laser is cool though 😊

    • @bhulery
      @bhulery 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bought them on Ebay, the only problem is they keep coming back it doesn’t kill them. If you have a couple the laser works but if you have a lot like me it takes to long to keep burning them. I ended up buying fish that eats them

  • @ReefDudes
    @ReefDudes 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good to know this actually works! Does the color of the laser affect it? (green vs red vs blue ect) or is it just the power of the laser?

    • @melevsreef
      @melevsreef  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I only know that I've had two lasers so far, and both were blue spectrum. This one is more powerful that the last one, and works better. After uploading the video, I zapped one that was 18" from the front glass and was able to make it shrivel up too. :)

      Had a green one and it worked fine until I dropped in the case with the batteries left in and ruined the lens. Luckily, it quickly burned through the black foam to the metal case or things could have gone very wrong!

    I have the same laser as your second one. Do you still use it? Mine seems to have gotten weak. I got news batteries

  • @bhulery
    @bhulery 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    We bought two laser for 83 bucks from the same guy. He gave a better deal for two. Plus I could go for twice as long having an extra laser. I killed every single one (over 100) in my 350 gallon tank in one night. It was fun! Also before you put the batteries in make sure you have the glasses on. Incase it’s on. Gloves help too, I felt the burning on my hang once coming back through the glass. It was just a quick ouch so I didn’t put any on. Focusing the laser would be hard with gloves is the other problem.

    Is this a method for control or can you eradicate aptasia with this method. I have a couple in my QT tank on some corals that I would like to prevent from getting in my display tank for as long as I can. Although with this method I’m more likely to treat them and keep my hands out of the water. Thanks

    I bought three burghia nudibranchs the other day. They eat smaller aptasia and will multuply rapidly in the matter of months. Something for anyone to consider if they have a consistant problem with them.

    Hi. Could you confirm the laser wattage. In your original video 3 years ago you said the laser was 1200mw at time 5.29. That would mean it is a 1.2 watt laser. These lasers from China are showing up as milliwatts are they mislabelled to avoid restrictions? I have been watching a few vids and most say you need 1 watt plus to burn these effectively. Going on that i have ordered a 3 watt laser, just waiting for it to arrive. This is however a great vid and very useful. Thanks

    • @melevsreef
      @melevsreef  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The original one was 1200mw, or 1.2 Watts. The new one in this video is 5000mw, or 5 Watts.

    • @lindashansen2561

    That's really cool, but I feel like it would be very time consuming for large infestations. I nuked every visible aiptasia (dozens) yesterday in about 15 minutes with a syringe full of kalk paste.

    • @melevsreef
      @melevsreef  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Keep in mind that if you do too much of anything, like in this case kalk paste, in one session, you may affect water parameters adversely. Just like using a lot of putty for planting corals at once can make LPS retract due to the chemicals in the water. They usually open up hours later, but it's usually best to target a section and address it, then do more later or the next day.

    • @jasepoag8930
      @jasepoag8930 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I was mindful of that. I saw a pH jump on my Apex of about .1. I'm thinking of attacking my bubble algae in small sections with it as well.

      @melevsreef  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I tried Joe's Juice recently, and I just didn't find that it worked as well as kalk. It hurt the aiptasia, but didn't kill it. They ended up all growing back within a week or 2. Kalk tends to sort of harden over them though, which I think helps. Mostly it's the cost factor. My half tub of BRS kalk will last basically forever for this. Wish I could throw in some peppermint shrimp to clean up the tiny nems and the ones I can't hope to reach, but my wrasses would snap them up in no time. Oh well, I feel like this is at least a sustainable way to keep ahead of them.

    • @jasepoag8930
      @jasepoag8930 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some of the ones I hit with Joe's Juice yesterday are ALREADY back. The ones I hit with kalk paste are still concreted over with kalk, so I'll assume they're dead.

    Is this a 5 watt laser?

    • @melevsreef
      @melevsreef  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Follow the link to the ad, that's the information as I understand it. 5000mw is what I know.

    • @hokemspitter
      @hokemspitter 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The link says 5 MW. 5000 mw is 5watts. Not sure about the device you have linked. Also, my CopperBand butterfly in a couple of weeks totally cleared my tank of easily 100 aptasa some of which were as big or bigger than the beasts that you toasted in your video.

    • @jhrice
      @jhrice 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The eBay page says 5 mW but that's so low power that I can't imagine it would fry anything. Plus the battery wouldn't discharge so quickly and the device wouldn't heat up appreciably. Which doesn't mean it's actually 5000 mW (5 watts) either although that would align well with the battery discharging so quickly.

    • @hokemspitter
      @hokemspitter 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It could be that they misstate the power due to power level restrictions on imports of these devices. It would be cool if an owner of this device could do a test and let us know the real deal.

    • @melevsreef
      @melevsreef  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have no idea how to measure the wattage? But I think you are right about stating one thing so you can import it into the U.S. 😏

      It has less success apart from visual pleasure. Your aiptasia source is actually inside rocks where you can't reach it. Anyway - it's a pleasure to kill it by hand as always! Good luck )

    • @Berbs73
      @Berbs73 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Plus you can pick the nudi's out of your tank at night and sell them to your LFS once they're finished eating all the aptasia.
      I had to pay $15/each for them little suckers.

    • @1MartinWaite
      @1MartinWaite 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You maybe could have picked them out if the endless list of livestock hadn't eaten the aiptasia eating nudi's as that list is quite a long one from Peppermint shrimp to wrasse, some butterflies and so on. I did see a list somewhere the other day if I find it again I'll add it on here.

    For those wanting to buy one, the exact laser kit shown here is available on Amazon. Shipping time looks to be about the same as here - 25-30 days give or take. The cost I paid was about 60 bucks. Rather than offer a link, just search “burning laser” or “powerful laser pointer” and look at the item picture and description. You can find exact match to the one featured.
    Say goodbye, aptasia! 😈

    The powers you are dealing with are watts not miliwatts.

    • @matkilla454
      @matkilla454 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are getting these style lasers for around 60-100$ with glasses and charger chances its only about 1-1.5 watts. You can get 5 watt lasers and lasers that take bigger batteries for longer use, sanwu lasers is reputable.

    • @melevsreef
      @melevsreef  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That has been confusing. The instructions vary, listing them as "mw" mostly. Like the first one I got three years ago was 1200mw. Or 1.2 watts.
