He swam off well so I'm sure in this case he will be ok! You are correct about all you've said here because it will all improve the odds of full and quick recovery. Big browns are resilient fish and they are the most reliant of all the trout so rest easy.
Good to know they are resilient but I'll definitely handle them better in the future! She did swim off nicely so I hope she is ok. Thanks for the comment :)
Hey Rosin, I think you are being hard on yourself but good on you for taking away and learning something from it. I've watched way worse on youtube of the way people handle fish in the Bow, keep your head up and keep plugging away. The Bow River can be fickle at the best of times, and only being able to fish from shore makes it that much harder so I always take what I can get.
Thanks Derek, I appreciate the comment! It's certainly a tough river but I'm stubborn and will continue exploring and learning the inner city until I start hooking more fish :)
@@RosinFlyFishing the good times are coming, so be ready for them and there is some prime water just outside the city if you ever want to fish hit me up on Insta.
I've been meaning to head further south and check out Cranston, Police, and McKinnon, so maybe I'll hit you up for a trip sometime soon if weather keeps up. One limitation I always have is 4hr sessions including drive, so the further I drive the less time I have to fish!
Good lesson - good points. Just this Sunday I saw a dead 22" brown at the bottom of this stretch. Apparently someone else needs to watch your video! Cold air kills!!
Oh man, that sucks no matter who is at fault, but did it happen to have the same markings as this one? This girl had some small whitish battle scars on either side near her tail.
Congrats on the big brown trout. It was awesome to see you get one after so many trips out there. Takes a lot of maturity to be self critical and own up to mistakes. It's a lesson we all learn as fisherman and props to turning it into a teaching lesson for others.
Hey man dont be so hard on yourself. Even tho the fish was handled longer than it should have been you still supported that fish well in ur hands and you did a good job. One thing that helps is a bigger net so that it can float in the water holding the fish so you can grab forceps or other things to deal with the hook. Great videos and keep up the good work.
Hey Rosin, I believe we can all learn from this video. The timer is great idea, it should be a wake up call for everyone handling a fish. 3 to 5 seconds out is bang on the money. Keep em’ wet friends.
Honestly so much respect to you for being willing to admit to your mistakes and educate people on being better anglers. I’ll admit I get so excited I almost black out after catching a trout like this and haven’t always treated the fish properly in my own selfishness. Maybe one day we will cross paths on the bow, tight lines man!
Thank you for your comment! I'm learning and growing as all humans are, and I learned a strong lesson that day. Getting excited is a very human emotion! Hope to see you in the river - good luck fishing!
Thank you for making this video. It's super valuable for newer fisherman, myself included. It seems like too many anglers consider the standard of good care to just be if the fish swims away or not. It's obviously clear that you care about the well being of the fish and the sport as a whole so please do yourself the favor of forgiving yourself for making a mistake. The important thing is that you learn from the mistake, and you've not only done that, but used it as an opportunity to teach others as well. Keep up the great work my dude!
Good video. Good call out about responsible stewardship. Not sure what the obsession with fish/selfies is all about. Enjoy the experience, get the fish back in the water. Great video.
Thanks for the comment. I still and will always look back on this fish and feel awful, but I definitely learned from it and hopefully another angler who needs to will also.
You did alot of things correctly, but over celebrated the moment. You will be more in control next time and the next fish will have a better chance of survival. If fly fishing was easy then everyone would do it.
Congratulations on a nice catch. You just caught up in the moment with the excitement and adrenaline rush. Lesson learned, don’t be so hard on yourself. You make this video to bring up the awareness, it will help other practice safe fish handling.
@@ReelinwithJ haha I was kidding, you can use whatever you want, more likely to catch nice Trout on spinners I'd bet! And also, I am definitely not the one to learn from for fly fishing ;). Could plan a meet up some time in Spring maybe? Got my next few sessions planned out already :)
Dude congrats on your first bow river trout, and a brownie too!!! Can't wait for mine. It shows a lot of respect when you can sit back and talk about what you did wrong, and will help others like myself to learn from you. I hope the little guy is okay! You turned a mistake into a teaching moment and that is awesome. Keep on fishing man!
Dont be hard on yourself, at some point we all have mishandled fish and even experienced anglers get at times so excited with there catch we forget about proper handling.
@@quinnengel5164 Ahhhh.. That is much more important. Thanks for taking the situation seriously and doing your part to protect the populace. There's time enough for fishing when you get out.
This is likely a typical release time for Drowsy, maybe twice as quick. The fish panning in front of the camera that guy does is just wrong. Good work for trying to do better yourself.
This was a life lesson for me (ashamed I needed it in the first place, but I acknowledge it) and since I proudly say my fish handling has definitely improved. I can't speak to Drowsy, it is hard to say how long his fish are out of the water, but I've noticed a trend toward less time out of the water so hopefully that trend continues.
You are not wrong! But for now, if I get another big one I'll just keep the whole thing submerged and if the fish slips out, thats ok :). Good luck fishing!
Your fish handling skills are much better then most I've seen. Thank you for reminding myself to always try to improve.
It was a hard lesson to learn, but it is what it is, and I hope it can serve as a reminder for others 🙂
Dude for all the social media warriors who just shred people for this same thing, props for using your own example👌🏼
Well thank you. I just needed to own up to it to learn a lesson and figured it might help someone else. You fishing lately?
Thanks for the lesson. I just picked up fly fishing last year and I didn't realize how quickly you should get the fish back in the water.
I'm glad my mistakes can help another angler :). Good luck fishing!
