Two new recently published, peer-reviewed scientific papers show that real warp drive designs based on real physics may be possible. They are realistic and physical, which had not been the case in the past. In a paper published in 1994, Mexican physicist Miguel Alcubierre showed theoretically that an FTL warp drive could work within the laws of physics. But it would require huge amounts of negative mass or energy. Such a thing is not known to exist.

In a recent paper published by Applied Physics, authors Alexey Bobrick and Gianni Martire, outline how a physically feasible warp drive could in principle, work, without the need for negative energy. I spoke to them. They had technical input on this video.
What Alcubierre did in his paper is figure out a shape that he believed spacetime needed to have in order for a ship to travel faster than light. Then he solved Einstein's equation for general relativity to determine the matter and energy he would need to generate the desired curvature. It could only work with negative energy. This is mathematically consistent, but meaningless because negative mass is not known to exist. Negative mass is not the same as anti-matter. Antimatter has positive energy and mass.
Even if you could create the Alcubierre curvature, you still need to accelerate the ship to speed of light and beyond. But to go beyond C, you have to have superluminal matter, or infinite energy. This is not possible.
What Bobrick and Martire figured out is that there is more than one type of warp drive. We can get to Proxima Centauri in 10 months without going faster than light, by dilating time inside the ship. If a spaceship is constructed of a massive super dense material, close to the mass density of a neutron star, then any individuals inside this ship would experience significant time dilation. Passengers on such a ship could go to Proxima Centauri in about 9 earth years traveling at half the speed of light, but only about 10 months would have passed from their perspective. But a huge amount of mass would still be needed, on the order of about the mass of Jupiter or larger.
And you would still need some kind of momentum exchange, similar to a rocket to accelerate this ship. Accelerating such a massive ship to half the speed of light would require the energy equivalent of 13% of its mass. Fusion technology or accretion disk energy could be used.
In a 2021 paper by physicist Erik Lentz of Gottingen University, he shows that unlike the solution by Alcubierre, which required unphysical negative energy, no negative energy is required to create certain shapes of warp bubble that could travel at any speed. The soliton he calculated looks nothing like the Alcubierre soliton, but it requires no negative energy. And it could theoretically travel at any speed, including traveling faster than the speed of light. Lentz does not think that the speed of light is necessarily unbreakable for his soliton. But in any case, it would require quite a lot of mass, at least an amount equal to 1/10th that of the sun.
Many other challenges would remain, but the point being made in these papers is important because it shows that interstellar trips are theoretically and physically feasible.
    #warpdrives
    #alcubierre
    #bobrickandmartire
More research can reveal optimizations on how to make the drive more efficient. We can start creating tiny warp drives in a lab, and look for microscopic warp effects as a proof of concept. A lot of work also needs to be done in material science and in constructing and developing new efficient propulsion systems. But if it is possible, then humans will undoubtedly figure out a way to do it. It is just a matter of time.

What reason is there to believe that time dilation cannot be achieved using high speed rotating magnetic fields?
If two magnetic fields rotating in opposition where one was encapsulated by the other, (given sources of both were sufficiently powerful enough to negate field disruption from the other or destruction of source) could the relative speed of either field be perceived to reach c? Each field rotating at half c in respect to its orientation would cause the effective relative speed to each other to be c, no?

Then, a question one may ask is by how much older do we want the passengers to be when they get there, as indeed choosing how massive is the ship can make a huge difference. And there you are, travelling to another star and choosing between being 10 years older upon arrival or a few weeks older. This is all, of course, while having in mind that creating massive warp drives is hard.

"Accelerating anything with mass to the speed of light, let alone beyond, requires an infinite amount of energy. This would be true for any warp engine design and is a physical impossibility that cannot be achieved."
But that's not true. Were this true, the entire point of having a warp drive would be lost. The point of warping the space-time continuum to begin with is so as to achieve relativistic "superluminal" speeds WITHOUT having to attempt doing so in normal space for the very reason you state: nothing with mass can attain, much less surpass, light speed.
Warping the space-time continuum permits us to create a "shortcut" through space by decreasing time and space (distance) via the warp... such that the ship, itself, relativistically travels faster than light without ever actually attaining anywhere near light speed in normal space... thus, sidestepping the whole nothing-with-mass-can-attain-light-speed dilemma. That's the entire point to the warp drive in the first place!

Hi Arvin. Great video. If one was to travel in a warp drive space ship at an effective speed faster than light would causality be violated in the same way as if one was to travel (in theory of course) at superluminal speeds through space without warp drive? I ask this because using warp drive one is technically not moving through space but instead bending space time around the ship to effectively travel faster than light but without actually “moving”.
    Thanks

    • @ArvinAsh
      @ArvinAsh  ปีที่แล้ว

That's a good question. Whenever one asks whether causality is violated, you have to state what your reference frame is. For you traveling on the ship, no causality would not be violated, since you are not moving with respect to the bubble of space around your ship. However, whenever FTL travel occurs, you can theoretically have observers traveling on some trajectory relative to the warp ship, where the amount of time elapsed for the warp ship, from their reference frame, would be negative. This means the warp ship could travel to their past, and bring information from the future. So causality would be violated in this special reference frame. This is one reason some scientists think Warp drives could not be created. However, imho, it is possible that if real warp drives are invented, no such special reference frame would be allowed to exist. I see that as a legit feature that the universe could impose on a workable warp drive.

That would demagnitize and instead of pulling in , they would push out and away from each other. If one is bigger it will push rapidly the other away harder therefore further faster. ...
Is this a correct concept on magnets?

The key to clearing our doubts is: first understand; What is GRAVITY IMPULSE; and what a SPACE-TEMPORARY BUBBLE ?. These questions are satisfied with this formula: Energy = mass * C ^ 2. This starting point allows us to build different technological solutions to travel without inconvenience (WITHOUT GOING THROUGH THE SPACE, BUT THE SPACE AROUND US). For that, for example: we can Imagine having a wheel with a radius of fifty (50) centimeters; spinning at high speed; through a five hundred (500) centimeter axis; and moving (oscillating) along said axis; end to end; at a certain speed (V); but you transfer energy to said wheel, only at the moment it reaches one of its ends. Then; What would you be doing ?: Answer: If Energy = Mass * C ^ 2 (C = It is a constant); What you do is: Increase your energy only when it reaches that extreme; artificially increasing the mass of your wheel; thus the curvature of the fabric of space at that end, and by eliciting gravity at that end. Thus this object (as a whole) will tend to fall towards said point of gravity; that is to say, this technological set achieves momentum, which they usually call: "Gravity Impulse Engine, Warp Engine, Quantum; and the handle of the Sword". Now; for an instant, Imagine that you master the NEGATIVE ENERGY; applying it to the opposite end now of the device: There your wheel will pass (now at that end) it will acquire negative mass, and instead of an attraction by gravity; at that extreme you will get gravity repulsion; increasing the momentum of said set more efficiently. Now, imagine that you dominate this negative energy at a supreme level; then controlling said magnitude at will; you will get the necessary balance; in front of any nearby massive object (be it a black hole, a star, our planet, etc.); that is to say at will; you can generate balance, attraction, or repulsion. Going a little further, and deviating something from the subject (Purposefully to reflect); In the mirror universe to ours; what is negative mass for us, in him is positive mass; so on with energy; as time passes (not wanting to say that a human being there walks the other way around, but with respect to us we would see it that way; but this individual with respect to himself, his walk, and all action would be as normal as here; likewise for other variables as with the passage of time, etc.). NOW THE ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTION: A gravity engine is not the same as a space-time bubble. A SPACE-TEMPORARY BUBBLE; it isolates you completely from Time, and Space. And how can you achieve it ?; Answer: You curve the space in such a way that; you transform it into a bubble-like envelope around you, which abstracts from it (from Space-Time); Isolating you. Likewise as such, when you observe the Light of Alpha Centaury that takes 4,367 Light years to You; what happens is that: with a Bubble oriented in the desired direction and direction; space will pass through you; equivalent to 4,367 Light years, taking you to that destination. Now; How can you do it ?; Answer: In two ways: Option (1): You generate that Bubble, but static around you (Yes, you do not have the ability to generate a Dynamic Envelope; that is, you cannot handle its contour at will); the one that you will have to complement, with an Impulse-Gravity motor (Only of these characteristics; NOT Ionic, or another class); that will provide direction and meaning. Option (2): You have full control of the contour of your artifact's envelope; so that; you make its outline undulate, just like a fish. With said control; you do not depend on a Gravity Boost Motor, so the model is simplified, and its effectiveness. To end; a Bubble-Space-Time, allows you to travel so to speak; isolated from the universe, so not a planet, star, etc., are obstacles; In other words; you are not part of the space; you travel secretly from it, and therefore you can travel from one point to another, and to any confines of it.
