i never played the game but (especially considering the insect theme) it seems like a potentially missed opportunity/open design space to have the pieces have an alternate "evolved form" on their other (yet unused) side this could help with the static feel of the individual pieces (not the board state, as that obviously does change thruout setup/the game) by giving them a transformation/progression state to work towards to with ur resources (only bad thing about it might be that it could be clunky to pick up and evolve a stone that is fully surrounded to evolve, but that problem exists in the basic movement mechanic of the base game as well)
