When I saw Asterism in NYC last week, they played Church. The best word I can think of to describe their performance of this song is mesmerizing. I was right in front of Haruka and no more than 3 feet from the stage. The speed and precision of Haruka is absolutely amazing and she can also put so much emotion into her playing. She is an absolute master of the whammy bar. Prior to NYC, they did a show in LA. Yesterday I watched a video of them playing on Hollywood Blvd. I am not sure why they decided to become street performers for awhile in LA but a pretty good crowd gathered for them and they were getting money in their hat. I am hoping that the next reaction is to Doll$Boxx and the song Take My Chance

Some info for you guys on Asterism. All three are classically trained at the Yamaha Foundation Music School in Fukuoka Japan, which is where they met. Haruka Noma (Hal-Ca) started playing at 10 and was writing songs at 11 (there is a video on their TH-cam channel of them performing the song 155 when Haruka and Miyu were 11 and Mio 13). She wrote 155, Dawn, Rising Moon, Blaze, Light in the Darkness, Yunagi and others between the ages of 11 and 15. Miyu and Mio are brothers and both started playing when they were under 10 years old. They have been together as a band for almost 10 years now even though they are just 20, 21 and 23 years old. You can see a short documentary Yamaha put out on them here th-cam.com/video/20jDm2fyLeA/w-d-xo.html. A lot of their very early stuff doesn't show up in searches because all the titles, tags and text is in Japanese. Miyu has been playing 7 string since the beginning but also plays 4 and 5 string bass in a number of their songs. Haruka is an extremely dedicated guitarist. She has almost a hundred videos on her Instagram and TH-cam of her practicing and covering tons of mostly metal and rock songs but she is also a gifted jazz guitarist and they have a couple of jazz-metal songs (Yunagi is one I particularly like). Haruka also plays keyboards, drums and bass guitar when composing. In front of an audience Haruka is a force of nature with charisma and personality that just lights up a stage. She is also extremely tiny (like 4' 8") and it is amazing how much of a huge presence she has.
That is the Asterism that I love. Instrumental. I’m not making a comparison here, but hearing this band triggers the same emotions I had in the 70s/80s: Pink Floyd (esp. David Gilmour), and the 2020s when I heard Aristocrats: (Guthrie Govan on guitar, Brian Beller and Marco Minnemann). All of them: Top musicians. Today the bass player was more in focus than last time (At least for me) and he was great. What a beautiful instrument.
It's sombre for a reason guys - the whole album Guernica ( think Picasso ) tells a story - almost a throwback to 70s " concept albums " . Ital mentioned Dave Stewart and " Lily Was Here " - if you haven't already I'd check out the version he did with Dutch saxophonist Candy Dulfer ( or better still do a reaction to her version of " Pick Up the Pieces " Part 1 )😍 ! ) BTW - only recently found out Hal-Ca is just 135 cms tall - good things come in small packages !

HAL-CA confirmed that the initial creative impulse indeed came from the Picasso's painting, but it's clear that they have studied the whole story of the bombing of Guernica very well. The names of the songs follow the succession of the events: MUSIC Gunfire Faced/Burned Church Day26 000 Monday 26 April was market day; there were more than 10,000 people gathered there, and I think HAL-CA imagined that the music was heard there, as often happens on the markets. Then the planes started bombing the city in waves, and at the end, they strafed the roads leading out of town, chasing the fleeing people and thus adding to civilian casualties-this is "Gunfire". The attacks destroyed the majority of Guernica. Three-quarters of the city's buildings were reported completely destroyed, and most others sustained damage. This is "Faced/Burned". "Church" is probably the church of San Juan, which was destroyed on "Day26," i.e. April 26th, when the raid occurred. What is "000" is not clear to me, but I think it may be the reference to the number of casualties in that raid, which nobody knows for sure. It's definitely over a thousand, and that's what probably three zeros refer to.

The three-hour long blitzkrieg nearly annihilated the city and killed or wounded one-third of the population. Haruka is an awesome guitarist and is developing all the time. I believe she is tiny only about 4' 5". but packs a a mighty punch on guitar. The bassist is pretty spectacular as well, and the drummer must be no slouch either to keep them on point
"Church" is one of my all-time favorite pieces from any band. For me, it is in the same class as Vivaldi's "Four Seasons". It is outstanding in every sense of the word. My guess for the upcoming song is Hanabie's new song, "Be the Gal". If not, I highly recommend it.
I get what you're saying about an instrumental being almost more personal than a song with lyrics. Its kinda like the difference between reading a book and seeing a movie of the book. When you read the book, you get to create part of the imagery and world in a way that's specific to your imagination, but in the movie you're experience is limited to the story and vision of the director. A book and an instrumental are more intimate experiences.

Very few people can play harmonics on the bass like Miyu. He is a unique talent just like Haruka.
