Friction between bore of interior of pulley and its axle is greater than friction between cable and exterior of pulley. Did you attempt introducing some lubricant into the pulley, and maybe some rosin on the pulley exterior? We all have your solution...:) :) :) Drill the original axle "bolt" out, replace with bolt and nut allowing easy disassembly and greasing periodically.
@ 70yrs. I'm not a welder but I have cobbled things together to get what I needed done all my life. I was rather amazed at the similarity (and differences) in out design.
Obviously your solution solved the problem, but your original build might have been improved by increasing friction and therefore grip between pulley and cable with something like gentle knurling on the surface of the pulley which interfaces with the cable. I’m about to start my HF crane build and what I drew out after watching many TH-cam vids before seeing yours looks almost identical to your design.

Ya you screwed it up lifting heavy logs. Good call on the cable twisting.

I know this is old but if you read the instructions you are supposed to use the winch to just take out the slack and use the jack to lift the load.

Apparently this is how all welders fix everything I did the same thing 3 yrs ago
What winch did you end up putting? For me the 2500 lb winch the cable seems so thin to me.
You need to lube it. Just put machine oil on each end before and after use.
