I never understood this event. According to the fighter pilot (in an interview), every attempt was made to contact them and a warning shot was fired. Faced with no response (even against the will of the fighter pilot), he received orders to shoot them down. What the hell was going on in that Korean cockpit.
Maybe I'll explain it to you. The Soviet pilot explains, he first fired warning shots, but they had no tracer ammunition. Tracer ammunition is a special type of bullet, modified to accept a small pyrotechnic charge at its base. This ignites when fired, burning brightly and making the projectile visible to the naked eye, allowing the shooter to follow the bullet's trajectory to the target and make corrections to their accuracy and aim. That is why the Korean air pilots did not realize that they were firing at him with warning, and the Soviet pilot, despite not having the tracer ammunition, did it without thinking three times. If the tracer munitions had worked, the Korean Air pilots would have realized the mistake in getting into the restricted airspace and would have been forced to escape directly to Japan as quickly as possible before the attack. I hope you understand me.
@@keiterpauta8270 I was a military pilot. i saw the interview of the russian pilot. he fired at the side of the cockpit of the 747 (this would dispense with tracer ammo, you can see the fire coming out of the guns), he made several attempts via the international 121.5 frequency which must be kept bugged on vhf nu2. If the Soviet pilot got close enough to shoot warning shots, you'd think they would've noticed it was a passenger airliner and not a military aircraft.
The Soviets should have identified it as a passenger plane, but this crew was incredibly incompetent. They had so many opportunities to realise that they were flying on the wrong heading, and were miles off course. Even the fragment of CVR you hear of KAL015 telling them their wind/weather reading being so different to KAL007 should have been a dead giveaway (this transmission wasn't right before they were shot down, they would still have had time to change their flight path and spared themselves) that they were off course.
