    I have always loved the STK type amplifiers. They may be not audiophile-quality, but they have a certain powerful sound to them with a ton of bass. I have a Sony av570 receiver with an STK, and is has a full sound that is not in any way lacking in bass. It has dbfb dynamic bass sound setting that sounds incredible. The issues: combining dbfb and max bass setting result in clipping.

    Great video btw.I have an Energy as90 sub with a circuit board issue, it powers up but then works intermittently. Was wondering if you know where (and if) there’s a replacement available 13:20

    I have a Mirage Omnisub 10 I got on clearance from Tweeter (anyone remember them?) over 10 years ago. Use it every day, upgraded the A/V Receiver and the rest of the speakers a couple of times (now a Denon 2113 and the Pioneer Andrew Jones set) but the sub has always been more than enough. Denon's room correction set it to something like -9 dB and it still rattles the lightbulbs in some scenes. But I know it's calibrated because when I listen to music on the "Flat" profile, it is not boomy, the bass is just there all the way down to the lower limit of my hearing.

      The quality is actually very good. Consider that powered subs do take a pounding. Remember this specific unit is not a real high end model but well constructed. There are some very good speakers made in Canada. PSB and paradigm are 2 brands.

      I have a Pro-liner sub I want take a swing at. Made in Canada, maybe? At least Head Quarters for the line is Vancouver based.
      Talk about noise. Mine is just noisy period. Tried other drivers, and the result is the same. The big Caps visually look good, but I ordered up some anyway. Now just educating myself on all the tips and tricks to see what else I can learn. The thing just gets some eerie static intermittently, enough that the auto switch turns itself on. AC filtering maybe?
      Just love these vids as I am a sponge to learn stuff. Fixed a few systems since my youth and now even more eager to do more, like breathing new life into a Sansui 350A just given to me. Will be a nice home unit on top my Roger’s Majestic AM/Phono cabinet.
      Hey, that Work-Safe BC was a dead give away. I am wondering what else may be made in Canada 😆

    Ok thank you, yes I did that already very carefully, it was bad, I couldn’t really trouble shoot it until I removed all that dust, I checked my power supply voltage at the big filter cap and it appears to have done 40 years worth and is shot, so now I’m trying to find another capacitor like the one that’s in there, it’s some kind of weird 4700uf 70volt cap with a dummy leg and your other typical connections, any ideas?, let me know what your thoughts are, no one has ever been in this amp but me, I would like to save it, good old realistic SA-1000 , its a nice little amp, it appears to be well made.

    Stk amplifier modules don't seem too bad, the ones to avoid are San Ken as they fail too often :-(
    Stk regulator modules in vcr's often fail.

    • @bassblaster505
      @bassblaster505 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      i agree MOST STK's weren't too bad. The main issue of the late 70's early 80's packs were there ability to dissipate heat. Which is why 4 Ohm loads were almost instant death for most.

    The fuse is 0.75A and this works on 120V. I'd say 60W output power would be very generous. More likely 40W or less.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The power module is rated at 60, and the voltage off the transformer is certainly high enough for 60. There is a higher power version of this sub as well with bigger caps.

  • @djscott9207
    @djscott9207 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Interesting power supply comment. We've seen bigger power supplies in some vintage higher quality class A preamplifiers, like that Dynaco you worked on. I know my solid state Bozak CMA-10 2DL six channel DJ mixer is close to 2A. It's a beast. It'd be one thing if that was a class D of some variety, but this is a run of the mill class A/B. It might be an H bias or G. Not sure, but it surely isn't going to punch its way through a heavy A/B class amp with real guts.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is more than enough cooling on the IC. Remember that this is a subwoofer. It is not running constantly like your main power amp would. DC speaker protection is built into the module, and if the outputs in the IC were to short, the power supply fuse would blow pretty quick.

    0.75A slow-blow fuse, 120*0.75 = 90, so at most 90W continuous or the fuse would blow. And I doubt it can even do that.

    • @Tegelane5
      @Tegelane5 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      At 8:52 is shown 120Volts and 2A, so it should be double of that. Maybe this 0.75 A is for 230V. But given the transformers size it is about 100W, and that 2A fuse blows only when there is dead short.
