Reminds me of a line from Jurassic Park "Life cannot be contained. Life breaks free, expands to new territories and crashes through barriers... Life finds a way." - Ian Malcom [Jeff Goldblum]
this got me thinking of the digital media of today. A few years ago we were downloading our games, music and movies, in part because it was free and in part because it was easier. The media industry responded hard and tried to stop us downloading to no avail. Today companies like Spotify and Netflix are now meeting our demands and almost every game is now sold via download
The only problem with this, activities are skewed in seasons. Not as many people are traveling. College campuses are filled with whiny students that just want to go to class, go sledding once or twice, get food, and go back to their dormitory. I think your point is valid and a great idea, just not applicable to all situations.
A good example of desire paths in technology would be Twitter with the RT function. Back in the day, people would just copy and paste the tweet, tagging the original tweeter with RT at the beginning. When Twitter introduced retweets, it ensured that retweets appear in this fashion on old APIs that don't support RT.
Wow you took it in a totally different way from what i meant. What I did is just point out that ive never seen any outsider ever talk about brasilia, nothing more. I don't want the world to know anything about my problems. Why are you offending me?
The NIH building labeled "Oncology" is actually the library of medicine. The Clinical Center is at the other end of the campus. Also, this section is gated so you cannot walk from the library to the street. The "hotels" are townhouses and apartments. It's hard to believe anything else that is being said here.
What if you don't like walking (or running) on pavement? It's harder on the body. You can walk or run on either side of the paved path. If enough people do this, the denuded, unvegetated area increases. Not likely perhaps, but if "desire-path designers" responded by widening the pavement (contrary to our desires), then you'd have to run along the sides of the widened pavement, making the denuded strip still wider. Just saying people don't necessarily want everything paved or "improved," and desire-path engineers may over-respond or overlook the desires of a significant minority.
I will say, when I have to follow a well marked path I always tend to walk to the left or right of it. Especially if it is grass on the sides. And I never really thought about it before.

The trivia are interesting, but I thought he was going to show us some interesting examples of when figurative shortcuts make something better. "Design for real human needs" is very broad and rather obvious.
why couldn't he have just left with calling it a short cut? I don't see a purpose in calling it a "desire path" its actually a longer word/phrase. Twice as long as a matter of fact if u count by syllables. Ironic.
Because they're called desire paths. A shortcut could be just another road or path, a desire path is one made by people by walking the way that makes sense, or the way that they desire to go.
"Desired path" is more appropriate in the context of business. "Shortcut = an ALTERNATIVE ROUTE that is shorter than the one usually taken" E.g. Imagine you want to build a road in a new area where no roads already exist; it does not make sense to use the word "shortcut" as it would imply there are already roads existing in the area. "Desired path" would be more appropriate when describing where the new road should be placed
There's a corner of two roads by my university which has a paved path cutting the corner, and a dirt path cutting a greater portion of the corner. Maybe people just prefer walking on the hard soil which is softer than concrete.
you said greater portion, i assume this meant they were shaving off just a little more by taking the grass. can't imagine anyone going to the grass and making it take longer.
He could have phrased this a lot more simply. People want to go where they want to go, stop hindering them. Let people go everywhere, whenever they want. They will take the fastest straight-line route to their destination most of the time. If they want the scenic route one day, they will choose it. You can't force them to take the scenic route - or the route you want (if you're a person with lots of money who builds roads or rules land), you need to let them take the route THEY want. It's pretty simply stuff, it's called freedom. And people with money and land take it away from people. As a child I wanted to walk any place that I could see with my eyes. Now, as an adult, I know that that's impossible, and 95% of the place I can see, I'm literally not allowed to go to. This is something we should really think about.
We just build a new tram in the university city of Lund in Sweden. And they laid out the crossing points so they don't match up with the bicycle paths, despite campus beign on one side and the student dorms on the other. Thus far people are still going around but I'm guessing that very soon there will be desire paths cutting straight across at unauthorized crossings at the place where the new tram tracks cut across preexisting bicycle paths. The people who drew up this plan were morons, they'll have loads of accidents and cases where the trams are late because they had to stop because pf people on the tracks. And all because the didn't consider a low friction solution.
Uhhh no. Relates not even slightly to social behavior, only to what a large number of people tend to desire, as individuals. They were not traveling to this location to be with other people, they were taking those routes to get to a desired location quicker with the least amount of time wasted. Desire.
As someone who actually designs things, I see this as an option for gathering data about what the design parameters should be so that you can optimize for a unique variables that may not have been present in past experiences. It can't be applied to all projects, obviously, but it's something to be aware of. Designers can never account for everything ahead of time because they change the system when they create.

Perfect!! his lecture is not merely concise, but also delivers the core
It' was very interesting Thank you

wait for snow, see tracks, pave in spring.
you're welcome
Completely missed the parallel. Try again.

How does this not have more views! It’s excellent!
Some good talk right here.
Design as things change.
The only thing that do not change is that things changes.
"The only constant is change."
Great talk! Mikael Colville-Andersen also talks about desire paths with regards to designing city for cyclists and pedestrians.
for the first time something that make sense to me .... Most importantly applicable great thinking machanism

Apple really needs to watch this
This is a very useful talk. Thanks!
It's the first time i hear someone talk about my city (brasilia) outside of brazil. So weird, it seems we didnt existed.
The general public are thick.
qualquer estudante de arquitetura no mundo conhece Brasília e outros trabalhos de Niemeyer
Wow you took it in a totally different way from what i meant. What I did is just point out that ive never seen any outsider ever talk about brasilia, nothing more. I don't want the world to know anything about my problems. Why are you offending me?
Just a bad mood, and this particular video did not work to lift his spirits.
I would recommend you watch the documentary Urbanized, they discuss Brasilia at length.
Standing ovation? No. Perfect analgogy of my modern subconscious thinking? yes
learnt vital things about designs
Finally a good talk
I like unpaved paths more at times. Especially on greens.
You really don't after snow melting season or heavy rains.
Really, how much more needs to be said? Great vid/insight.
Haven't I seen this talk some five years ago?

CoiledDrake Lol, welcome to thinking about it.
It is possible the speaker was simply using walking paths as a metaphor for business ventures, rather than literally paving parklands.
Wellaboveswell He was speaking of both paving and business ventures, but more interested in the latter.
He probably mean paths that deviate from existing paved paths.

thanks for caption in Arabic

awesome!! :D
6:20 what's he talking about when he says " look at the top of the image there's another desirepath forming"
On the far side of the checkpoint (is that the right word) there's a dirt path around it too.

***** short cuts are paths of least resistance. That's what makes them short
It sounds with more meaning.
because putting what people want on a menu has nothing to do with travel
"Desired path" is more appropriate in the context of business.

I don't think you understand how shortcuts work, they cut the greater portion of the corner thus saving the most time... Try again.
Xiaolin Draconis They already made a shortcut which was then paved, but then they chose to walk on the grass again.
you said greater portion, i assume this meant they were shaving off just a little more by taking the grass. can't imagine anyone going to the grass and making it take longer.

What can we learn about short cuts? That there's a long way around.

Well the world damned well better start exploding very soon. I've been waiting for decades.
+Xiaolin Draconis this is what i learned in school.. i know, it was kinda douchey to make a correction.
Like Aviri says, it is both things. Weird to think it can only be called one word or serve a single purpose.
