    I saw his work in Freiburg, Germany, which is a beautiful town in the black forest. I was also amazed by his water-color paintings which were exhibited there. Great to see him featured in a video by someone from the other side of the world. Only note: in beginning (0:34) he is introduced as Hans Winterhalter but his name is Franz. Franz Xaver Winterhalter to be German about it.

      Oh no! Would you believe I kept doing that while recording? I don't know why but I seemed to have this mental block with his first name. Ugh. I'll try to see if I can place a card there with the correct name. Darn. But how wonderful that you got to see his work in Freiburg. I believe that was the first place he studied, if my memory is correct...then in Munich.

    I love Winterhalter's work! I don't know who she is, but he painted her portrait more than once, and one thing I love about this one is that it departs from the conventional portrait composition. He places her head in the upper dead center, and has her sitting next to a wall looking away from the viewer as if in deep thought and reflection. The only thing that brings her back to earth is a bit of the chair she's sitting in. To me, the most amazing thing here is the presentation. That astonishing frame has no liner! This creates the feeling of a window you could reach through and touch her on the shoulder. An incredible portrait in an unforgettable presentation!

    One thing I'll always find interesting is how our eyes create this illusion of details where there is little if any, It's almost like a grand trick the artist is playing on their audience. When you showed the details of the bracelet and dress, how almost messy and formless it appears but from a distance it replicates how our eyes would process such shapes.

      @JillPoyerdFineArt  ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know, off-hand. If I have time sometimes, I'll see if I can find his palette colors.

    • @daveh9521
      @daveh9521 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Lyn, Backgrounds like this are composed of numerous colors, but for that beautiful "gray-green', don't start with black. Mix a burnt umber with yellow. This will give you a kind of khaki green that you can gradually lighten with bits of white. Then you will find it easier to shift this color to warm or cool with cadmium reds, and even shift back to cooler again with ultramarine blue. I describe it this way because the background you see in the painting has more colors in it than are apparent. You want the background to be unified in color, but most importantly, to create that value shift behind the subject that gives it space and dimension. Also, when you lighten your colors, don't rely too much on white; use that sparingly, or create a light color with white first, then mix with that. I've been a painter all my life and still, I experiment all the time =)
