I have noticed that my voice gets tired (distorted) when I have thick mucus in my throat as a result of drinking little water. Lack of sleep also plays a great role in singing. Thanks, Chris. I am grabbing water bottles before forgetting 😑
You’re accurately describing me. There were times where I’m in a flow state and I sound amazing. And now I’m just exhausted and can’t stand that I’m unable to sing properly. It’s like my ear shuts off and I can’t hear pitch properly anymore.
This is perfect 💯 My voice gets tired often if I sing for a certain amount of time* so I always practice the day before a performance and try not to sing till the time of my performance. If I do practice like 30 minutes before the performance, I won't be able to hit those notes! I'm a Countertenor :)
I think using too much force and not gently placing the sound is what causes this … Technically I feel like you cannnn be able to hit the high note whenever you want if you’re so used to knowing where it’s placed and can just access that area. So yeah ideally the key to not getting tired is to relax ur vocal cords as much as possible let em’ go & then also remembering placement as much as possible
Thanks Chris, I’m a soon to be 58 year old guy, never thinking I’d be be the lead singer in a rock band! We currently have about 40 songs, and I’m always thinking how do I get to the end of our hour and half set right now! This exercise will definitely help👍👌
Thanks lipe you saved me from messing up my upcoming audition for a big university in Australia that is partnered with berklee. I stopped doing vocal warm-ups for about 2 months and now I have an audition in 3 days. This helped immensely in so many parts of my song where I have to switch from chest to head.
Yes! This is great. I've always struggled because somedays I can last for long periods of time with little tiredness and some others after four or five songs I feel tired
Exactly the same for me! As long as I stick to more laid back songs I can keep going for ever, but then when I do more agressive singing I sometimes feel really tired vocally after just a few songs. Still other times, like during todays practice session, I can belt out pretty rough stuff like Faith No More and Alice In Chains covers for an hour or more without a hint of harshness afterwards. Don’t know why that is...always try to be body aware and I can’t seem to find any patter when it comes to stress, how I’ve been sleeping etc either. Is it the same for you?
Hey Chris despite being a home recorder (study or garage,) I recognise much of these faults, especially after multiple takes and things are going south, Will put this on the back burner for when I finish Discover Your Voice and then use it going forward.
I guess its kinda related, but placing my voice forward and developing better closure helped me a ton, i was getting tired because my voice was too close to my throat instead of the "mask", it stems from the way i speak, i have a very low voice and ive developed this bad habit of talking from the back of my throat and singing requieres a more "nasal" forward position, the bad habits you get from speaking can really influence this, its a reformatting thing :)
I feel you man! It can seem counterintuitive to be nasal and forward but when you are able to sing forward, open and use nasality, everything becomes SO much more efficient, right? Cheers
@@pedrokoury1352 the old pensil trick helps, as you hum with the pensil in your mouth you should place the resonance above it, feeling the sound vibrate between the tip of your nose and the upper lip. Theres a few helping tricks like this. You can also imagine a ball is about to hit your face and your using your voice to stop it, thus training forward placement as well. Visualizing allways helps me :)
@@jakeah1175 Theres an exercise Chris points out in one of his videos where you put water in your mouth and sing, it helps tremendously too cause your voice places forward in a natural way, similar to the pen in teeth classic exercise too
I'd suggest you'd momentarily drop or lower the compression of your microphone in every singing part of this course :) it would allow us to have a better sense of how you really sound. The Mic compression makes it quite difficult for us to get a good sense of the dynamic range your voice is actually going through !
Hey i'm back to watching your videos after a hiatus from singing. Came back with confidence and was able to hit an A# and even sustain it for 14 secs. I tried to work on singing the whole song and still hitting and sustaining the note and have been getting some cool results. I guess I needed this time to absorb your teachings and forget about my insecurities. Long breaks can be very good. Hope you're well in this pandemic!

Hey Chris, thanks for this tip. One thing that happens a lot is that I get my talking voice tired and by consequence (of course) affects my singing. Is there any exercise or advise for caring about our speaking voice? Thanks again for all your content.
Chris, what does this exercise do in terms of vocal fold repair? Meaning, does it remove fold swelling, restore elasticity? It could also be that I misunderstood you...lol!
This video isn't so much targeted at vocal recovery and more how to prevent you from getting into a situation where your constantly tiring out your voice. There's lots you can do for vocal recovery... especially at a speech level (speech therapy is great for this as well)
moving too much air makes sense singing, almost whisper singing is really easy and comes naturally. singing louder is difficult, especially with chest voice, for some reason. I believe it's because I need to work on consistent support. but when the support is there, I'm pushing out too much air at certain volumes or on certain notes which tends to be the worst culprit. the other day I was singing my heart out in the shower, and boy did I like it, but then halfway through the second song and I couldn't match the intensity. that's where I realised I'm messing up somewhere past the "dialling in support" stage.
Hello! I loved the content. I have a question: My voice doesn't feel tired at all, it's my entire body feels extremely exhausted from a lot of singing. The whole thing just feels like a workout. Does this method of practice apply there as well?

Wow, genious exercise, gonna practice this! Could this exercise be compared to the 'vomiting of words' you already explained in other tutorials, except that you gently swim from open to forward/nasal resonance?
I might be completely wrong here but it SEEMS to me that Myles Kennedy makes wide use of this technique now to preserve his voice when touring. However the intense 'A vowel sound' doesn't suit his voice as nicely as when he projected intensely in the early days of his career and can become shrill to the ears after a while. Love your channel Chris! I have a question though. I seem to have trouble getting good closure with my vocal chords when singing in head voice, and also (if its relevant) ever since puberty I have not had the ability to scream (not the metal scream, but the shocked scream like when you get scared). This is annoying because my preferred style of singing is the old classic rock style of Led Zeppelin etc. Is there anything that I can work on to improve or is it just a physical limitation??
You can totally train it in... it's a muscle memory thing (most of the time) Sometimes people have a genetic issue or problems with the cords, but it's usually just due to not 'feeling' things correctly. Have you joined my free course yet? (linked in the video info) That's the perfect place to start so I can help you further!
Thank you so much Chris! Btw I have a quick question, how come when I sing even for a short period of time I instantly start building up mucus in my throat? I can’t seem to find the answer for that.
Same reason actually. You're moving too much air through your cords, they are drying out and mucus is a reaction your body creates to 'protect' your cords. Also see my video on "why you get hoarse"
chris, do you take request from your subscribers? I mean, would you mind to make a tutorial how to sing like kellin quinn from sleeping with sirens? anyway, nice tutorial as always
Hey Chris! Just a quick question... When I sing in head voice, I can't avoid vocal fry. I mean it's not always there, and I also can switch between headvoice with vocal fry and without it, but quite often I can't stop the vocal fry, no matter how much air I use. There might be some kind of problem with my vocal chords, or is it normal? I'm asking, cause in this video I heard the same thing in your voice (7:29, 10:15, 10:26, just a few example) and now I don't feel so bad :D Thank you very much! ^^,
It's totally normal. I doubt anything is wrong with your vocal cords. Moderating fry is a feel-based skill you learn over time with lots of attentiveness to how things feel over certain notes in your range... coupled with the proper support and resonance placement. Overall, its best to LET your voice so some things sometimes and just see what happens :)
So I’ve been practicing a lot recently and in general and everything was going fine I was able to sing but recently my high range in my chest voice is kinda cracking/crackling and idk what to call it. Some days it goes away some days it doesn’t and I’m not sure what my voice is telling me. What are the differences between all the vocal cracks which are signs of strengthening and which are signs of injury is my question Chris
generally, unintentional cracks, breaks or a lack of fluidity and control with your voice could be a sign of mild vocal swelling. Intentional grit or breaking is done above the vocal cords in a different area of your vocal tract and actually saves your primary cords from getting hit too hard. I'd recommend backing off your airflow, singing more in your pure head voice... softly. Coax your voice, listen to your voice and how it feels. Have you joined my FREE "Highly Effective Exercises that Won't Annoy Your Neighbors" course yet? You can find it at www.mymusicalvoice.com.
