    The Soviet Hockey Teams were, by far, the greatest of all time! They could destroy any NHL team from any era, anywhere, anytime!

    Greetings! My name is Tim. I have just published volume # 1 of my tribute to the great Soviet Hockey Dynasty. The title of my book is: MAGICIANS ON ICE. I am currently working on volume # 2. I plan on writing all the way through to the last Olympic Gold Medal in 1992. Volume #1 traces the roots of hockey in Russia and ends with them winning the 1954 World Championship. You can get my book through Amazon or Barnes and Noble or directly from my publisher, AUTHORHOUSE.

    Boris was enormously competitive, and was clearly caught up in the emotion of the moment, and did something that he should not have. Yes. However, there is a huge difference. The despicable act against Kharlamov was ordered by the Canadaian bench! It was a premeditated play ordered by the Canadian assistant coach! He should have been banned from the sport for such an act! Also, the Canadaians did in fact get to choose some of the refs.

    @eddieranden I don't think so. Each nation that has a national anthem treasures it in their hearts as the ultimate melody of all, so when you so categoricaly state that this or that nation has the best anthem, you are an ignorant, and I don't care if you came from Mars....

    The Soviets transformed hockey at a time the sport needed transforming & thus hockey really benefited from Soviet influence.
    Thanks to better diet/nutrition & child immunizations Post World War 2 athletes bacame bigger & faster, to the point where puck advancement impractical, ushering in Dump & Chase era, not to mention increased violence.
    Europe adapted by switching to a bigger ice sheet & restricting contact & an exciting game based on speed & athleticism could develop

      This is true. Powerlifter and trainer Louie Simmons brought a lot of Soviet training methods to America and now every serious athlete incorporates a means of training that has some element of Soviet roots.

    Olympics record of USSR national hockey team is impressive:
    "The team's Olympic record was 62-6-2 (win-loss-tie) through 1956-1992. They scored 467 goals and gave up 127 goals. That averaged 6.67 goals per game and 1.81 goals given up"
    they dominated in 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s....

  • @montyZdog

    BTW. That melody was initially also abandoned when Gorby & Co. came to power. The first anthem of the "democratic" Russia that they preferred was written in 19th century by the classic composer Mikhail Glinka. The irony was that Glinka hated Russia so much that when he decided to leave the country he purposely stopped the horses at the border and spit on the Russian soil.
    Nobody was able to write a decent lyrics so the Glinka's melody was dropped and the old USSR anthem was reinstated.

    I appreciate your info, but someone already gave me info about her. I know that is the "new" Russian anthem with revised lyrics to the music of "Hymn of the Soviet Union." I really enjoy the clips of Larisa with Garik Martirosian on "Dve Zvezdy" and another of her appearing with Garik, Tymyr Rodriguez and Max Pirlo on "Comedy Club."

  • @JBM425

    Someone was kind enough to tell me that the singer is Larisa Dolina. I've checked some of her videos here on TH-cam, and she is fantastic!
    It's also great seeing some of the old warhorses of Soviet hockey. I was a staunch anti-communist, but I also admired their skill and speed.

  • @bainsey89
    @bainsey89 15 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's a great melody, but the opening lyrics translate late to "unbreakable union of freeborn republics." Nothing unbreakable nor free about the USSR, eh? Glad they kept that tune for a new anthem, though.

  • @JBM425
    @JBM425 17 ปีที่แล้ว

    Does anyone know who the singer is? She was out of sync three or four times, but she has a fantastic voice. I'm assuming she's someone famous to be featured so prominently.

    There is a sad note to all of this, however. On this very evening, December 22 2006, the legendary Soviet female gymanst Yelena Mukhina, passed away later that same evening after living with paralysis for over 26 and 1/2 years. She tragically snapped her spine attempting to do a Thomas Salto in the Olympic Training Center at Minsk on July 3 1980. She was the best gymanst the Soviet Union ever turned out, and was second in greatness only to Nadia from Romania.

    @conda420 But nobody dived better,than the great one on canada cup -87.Every time a russian player passed him,became penalty. Team canada could have committed a murder, without a penalty that night. But hey,when you have to win. One way or another. After all,they did not have to make a copy of the trophy...again.

  • @wilmanric1
    @wilmanric1 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @bladerunner9405 Yep, it's too bad that back then, either knee or back surgery was generally the beginning of the end for a player. I remember watching the game when Dryden came out of the net to try and get to the puck before someone on a breakaway did. They collided half-way to the net. I knew I'd just seen the beginning of the end for him. Sad.

  • @bladerunner9405
    @bladerunner9405 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @wilmanric1 I was too in my teens back then, the Russians (then Soviets)really proved they belonged; it is amazing what sports can accomplish!!!!! too bad Bobby Orr was never the same after numerous knee surgeries, I too remember some names in the likes of: Vassilie, Fetisov, Mikhailov, Maltsev and Makarov!!!

  • @SWALE1984

    After scoring 5 unanswered goals in the third period of game five enroute to a 5 to 3 victory, one can argue that the Soviets may very well have become slightly overconfident. That is true. however, the loss of Kharlamov with the Soviets leading in game 6, turned the whole series around. It broke up the tremedous Soviet offense.

  • @SWALE1984
    @SWALE1984 17 ปีที่แล้ว

    Dryden was the one who had the stacked team in front of him. Also, Dryden played in only 4 games that series. Tretiak played in all 8 and was physically worn out by game 8. Also, Canada would have lost all four games in Moscow if they would not have cheated by deliberately ordering the slashing of Kharlamov's ankle in game 6. That despicable act changed the whole series.

  • @SWALE1984
    @SWALE1984 17 ปีที่แล้ว

    You are absolutely right! No hockey team in the history of the world can possibly compare to the SOVIET HOCKEY TEAMS. They were a dynasty that lasted from 1951 until 1991. That was incredible! Tretiak was my favorite player. I think that he was a thousand times superior to Dryden.

    I met some Russian people when I used to donate blood plasma in California, every one of those ladies was super nice, always greeted me with smiles and kindness. I am an American, by the way, and I got a lot of respect for Russian people, our friends. This here is a great rendition of their National Anthem!

    Yes. :))
    Look up the full choral one, search Hymn of the USSR.
    As an American, I have to admit that our anthem pales in comparison. Theirs is just so much more regal sounding.

    Russia needs another coach like the great Tikinov, who'd keep everyone's ego in check. That's why they were so good in the past, they played as a team. THEY DON'T DO THAT ANYMORE.

I was in my teens when I first saw the Canada-USSR hockey games. Yakashev, Kharlamov, and above all, the incredible Vladislav Tretiak! Great games, the outcome of which was always in doubt! Thanks for posting this.

    Great hockey players. I remember the game in Montreal against the CSKA Moscow on the 31st december 1975, it was the best hockey game ever by all standards. The "red-blue-white" against the "blue-white-red", the two best hockey teams in the world of that era... Wow, memorable, people are still talking about that game... Pure hockey! It ended 3-3.

    My favorite always was Andrei Khomutov. I haven't seen him for so long. Know he played in FC Gotteron, Switzerland together with Bykov a few years ago and then coached Losanna (I think), but what is he up to now?
    He actually was a very handsome young man back then, I had a huge crush on him.
