It was late monday night in Finland almost thirty years ago..Next day was school day with exams...I recorded this full match video tape,but unfortunately i have lost it over the years.Great memories.

Tuota päivää , tuota tapahtumaa ja tuota Todella Kutkuttavaa peliä : En unohda koskaan!! Seurasin sitä omasta televisiostani suorana lähetyksenä asuessani vielä vanhempieni luona 1988. Antero Karapalon värikäs selostus ottelusta loi intensiivisyyttä vielä lisää! Ja kun Lehtonen nosti kiekon maalin kattoon ohi Mylnikovin , en voinut muuta kuin tuulettaa! On vain harmillista , että se video , jossa pelin jälkeen Viktor Tihonov saapui onnittelemaan Suomen joukkuetta pukusuojaan on kadonnut! Makea voitto Neuvostoliitosta ja kaikkien aikojen ensimmäinen mitali Olympialaisista Suomalaisessa Jääkiekossa oli Tosiasia!!
So lovely.. We beat the Great Sovjet team and all Canadians are cheering for Finns. This win did really start my hockey fandom.

Jännä, että tämä näyttää ja kuulostaa aivan muinaiselta ja eri maailmalta vaikka väliä vuoteen -95 ei ole kuin sen seitsemän vuotta.

Oli hieno peli, tosin juontaja pilas sen jo alussa, kun tuli jälkilähetyksenä....
nyt alkaa peli Suomi - Neuvostoliitto, voitolla Suomi saa hopeamitalit ja lopuksi sanottakoon TÄMÄ peli kannattaa katsoa loppuun.
No-one plays hockey at that level to lose on purpose. However, CCCP didn't have anything at stake there, and to Finland it was the boost that finally took them to the world elite. In the end, everyone won. Right now it's hard to see that some thirty years ago there was Canada, CCCP and Sweden. Czechoslovakia and USA were contenders too, but everyone were considered the rest. Now the competition is something else.
Yup its amazing to see Ice Hockey grow.

Of course they did, but the only competition where all countries had their absolute best players was Canada cup. I can't see why anyone would truly try and define the level of any team by iihf wc or other tournaments. All credit to cssr, a great hockey nation, but not as consistent as the two giants of those times.
World Championships and Olympics were truly top level tournaments back then, as the European teams had practically all their best players attending. And Czechoslovakia was the team that was mostly the main challenger for the Soviets in those games through the times - not Sweden, or anyone else.
Canada Cup for its part was an invitation tournament on North American ground & ice with North American referees during the Cold War... It is no absolute or uncontroversial measure for defining "who was who" either. Sure it was the only tournament where the Canadian & US teams had their best players attending and could compete with full force.
In general, today's European hockey fans should find a sense of history and culture of their beloved sport and stop spitting on World Championships / other traditional "European" tournaments and their legacies. That's just plain stupid.

Kyllä! I remember this match. Soviet took Gold, Finland Silver, my country Ruotsi / Sweden took Bronze. I guess if Finland would have beaten the Czecks, Finland would have been the Olympic champions in Calgary.
Finland lost first game against Switzerland also...
Loss to Swizerland meant nothing for final standings, only group games Vs Can and Swe who also qualified to final top 6 round. One point more in final group would raise Finland to gold, so draw against Czecks needed. BUT if Finland had draw with Czecks, this last game against USSR would been totally different.
@@xyzBoogie76 You are right. I remember, some Team Finland previous coach said earlier in that winter, that Team Finland could beat Soviets in 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics. Might have been Kalevi Numminen, father of Teppo Numminen.

@@beorlingo No, I'm not saying that. As any sports, when gold medal has already reached, there is higher propability that competition winner do not have to give their best any more. I don't believe that Tihonov gave free win. But if gold medal would be open before last game, bets would also be higher at tournaments last game. Maybe that's why we got finals and semifinals nowadays.
But anyway, our first hockey medal.

I WISHD ID HAD OLD CCCP AND FINLAND JERSEY. TÄÄ ON AIVAN MAHTAVA JUTTU
This was the only time this could be considered a huge upset in a way. Finland beating the Soviets in the Olympics when that by itself was virtually impossible. In fact, the only time that the USSR had been beaten in the Olympics was 1960, 1980, and 1988 (This video), even though that year they still won the Gold because of the confusing format the Olympics used to have for hockey. 1960 and 1980 were the only times they had lost and 1960 was when they finished in third, their lowest finish ever according to them. Plus, Finland had NEVER won an Olympic medal before and this year they finally had got it done by beating the Soviets.

Canada was out of medals allready. They lost to Finland 1-3. If Finland had lost then both teams would stay in 5 points. Finland needed only one point to get silver but Finland won!
Soviets 8, Finland 7, Sweden 6 and Canada 5 points. And goals Finland was +8, Sweden -1 and Canada +4. So this game had meaning only to Finland and Sweden!
No matter what, I was happy for the Finns to get silver then :)

Kuinka yksinkertaisia ihmisiä voi olla olemassa? "Tihonovit" krapuloissaan surffaili YYA-matsin tyyliin "mieluummin suomi hopealle kuin svedut". Kiitti vitusti.
Ja näin kun tässä muistelee niin itse asiassa Suomi varmisti mitalinsa jo ennen toiseksi viimeistä otteluansa Kanadan voitettua Saksan aiemmin illalla. Tappio muuten turnauksessa alisuoriutuneelle Tshekkoslovakialle ja Suomen mahdollisuus kultamitaliin meni. Tilanne ennen viimeistä kierrosta oli: NL 8, Suomi 5, Ruotsi 4, Kanada 3, Saksa 2, T-Slovakia 2. Suomi oli siis keskinäisen ottelun perusteella jo varmuudella Kanadan edellä.
Well as a Dutch I only remeber the names Kruthov, Makarov, Fetisov, Tretjak, Larionov, Kazatonov etcetc. Nice that Finland won here, but there can of course be little doubt which team was completely dominating icehocky after, say 1960 till 1992. With fantastic icehockey. So skilled such a well balanced team. I have not seen anything like it since. In NL USSR icehockey was like Brazil in football. In fact Dynamo Kiev (football) in the 80s copied the icehockey tactics and did well! I miss them.

On kyllä melkoiselta sähläykseltä näyttänyt jääkiekko vielä tuohon aikaan. Mutta oli kyllä kova temppu saada hopeamitali tuolloin ja vielä voittaa ryssät viimeisessä ottelussa. Tämä vetää vertoja ysivitosellekin ja oli oikeastaan kovempi juttu, kun huomioidaan aika, paikka ja turnaus.
Vasta tossa viimeisten minuuttien kohdalla nousi tajuntaan että tuollahan on oikeasti Krutov-Larionov-Makarov ja Kasatonov-Fetisov jne jne jotka ei pysty voittamaan
Totta! Toisaalta oliha tossa meidänki joukkueessa Suomen parhaimmat pelaajat tuohon aikaan, NHL tähtiä ja nykyisä maajoukkuelegendoja.

Igor Larionov kerrtoi, etteivät he tahallaan hävinneet. He olivat olleet ryyppämässä edellisenä iltana. Suomi voitti ottelun, koska he pelasivat paremmin.

I think the list contains full names. Alexey is a full name that people put in their passports. F.e. Yury Alexeevich Gagarin (not Alexandorvich). And Alexey has it own diminutive: Lesha, Leha, while Alexander as a rule is Shasha or Shura. So he's Alexander, he commented the recent World Cup. Kasatonov is correct, he's really Alexey. Mogilniy is Alexander, so it's also correct about him.

Kanada oli jo mitaleiden ulkopuolella, ottelulla oli merkitystä ainoastaan Suomelle ja Ruotsille.
Suomi olisi hävittyään ollut samassa pistemäärässä Kanadan kanssa, mutta Suomi voitti keskinäisen ottelun 3-1. Ruottinkin Suomi olis ohittanut jo tasapelillä . Keskinäinen ottelu 3-3 ja Suomella maaliero +8 ja Ruotsilla -1.

jupetzku. Elikkä niinkun jo alemmista kommenteista käy ilmi, Suomen mitali oli ennen tätä ottelua jo varma- pronssia olisi tullut tappiollakin. Kun pelattiin pelkällä sarjasysteemillä eikä pudotuspelejä vielä pelattu, satoi tällaisia "armonpullia" muillekin. Esim. Tshekkoslovakialle MM-kisoissa 1982.

Funny that Soviet Union lost to Finland and yet they won Olympic GoLD medals, Finland fimnished on the second place and yet lost to Czechoslovakia in the final group.

Mietin jo että miten tuo turnaus oikein meni kun Suomi voitti pelin ja voitti hopeaa. Sitten tarkistin asian Wikipediasta.
Usseempi Erkkikin joukkuessa ja jürgenviikset lähes jokkaisella. On kyllä järkyttävä tuo Tammen kypärä.
Kolmas. Suomi voitti Kanadan 3-1 ja tappion tullessa keskinäinen ottelu olis kait ratkaissut. Maaliero Suomella +8 ja Kanadalla +4 eli jos se ois ratkaissut niin oli pitänyt tullä isompi tappio. Tasapelikin ois riittänyt hoppeeseen. Sillä Ruottin kanssa tasapeli ja Ruottilla maaliero -1.
