    The two spurge items for me are 1. We always have a good car. I do not scrimp on a car. ( I do not want to be stranded in 111 degree heat) 2. I did not scrimp on activities my daughter wanted to do: all of her dance classes, music lessons, travels, etc.

      Kids activities can add up can't they? Summers were especially expensive. But like you, we always prioritized those things too.--Tasha

      My sweet daughter just turned 20. I would love her to start a beauty channel. She is great with makeup, fashion, hair, and keeping very fit. She finally allowed me to have her in one video on my channel. Our girls would get along so great.

    Yes on the bra's!!! Cheap ones NEVER work for me!

  • @YKKY

    Tasha... may I just say... you ROCK this top! And YES on the bras, shoes, clothes and food as well as cosmetics we ACTUALLY need. We buy quality and less since we only have one body, one skin, one life and we invest in our health upfront. That said, we are building a house now and we cannot wait to grow our own veg and fruit as being vegans, we go through tons of the stuff!

    Can you do a part 2 on things you’ve purchased more on that weren’t worth a darn? Also I felt this was really well thought out & I could relate to about 7 out of the 10👍🏽

    We actually eat mainly fish, chicken once in awhile and steak occasionally. I believe, you either eat your medicine or take your medicine. I prefer eating my medicine so I spend more on quality clean food.

    Definitely bras and dress/gym shoes. I also do the same for coats, bc you use them year after year. I do old navy or target for maternity wear or trendy clothes but I've gotten higher quality clothes from J crew or banana Republic from thred up for cheaper or hand me downs from friends that lasted for years.

    I totally agree with this list. It focused on what's best for the family (e.g. schools), health (Tasha's feet), quality (higher-priced staple wardrobe vs. high-priced fads), and maximizing time (amusement park passes). You guys are a perfectly reasonable, down-to-earth, and self-assured couple.

    This feels silly but we got a Hyundai Sonata over and Elantra because the backseat was more comfortable. Like it felt ridiculous at the time to spend 2k more but man has that been soooooo helpful. I felt like such a grownup when I made that decision.

    • @OneBigHappyLife
      @OneBigHappyLife  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's not silly at all. We sat in the back of every single car we considered. Despite being a compact car, the Fit had plenty of leg room and head room. Super important!--Tasha

    • @DrCarolynTheLibrarian
      @DrCarolynTheLibrarian 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      YES, the backseats are so important! You never know when that will come in handy and I cannot tell you how many times I have taken naps in my backseat because it was so comfortable!
      I also spent a little extra to get seat warmers, and let me tell you, BEST DECISION EVER!

    I used to buy a new blender every year, or sometimes more than one a year until I bought a Vitamix. It has lasted me 20 years and still going strong! Completely worth it.

  • @crystalgale15
    @crystalgale15 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I feel the same. I am willing to splurge on food, shoes, staple clothing items, makeup/skincare, and our house (we chose based on location and convenience). We are also looking to splurge on our future car, something that will lasts us years. 😊

  • @Locutus0fBorg
    @Locutus0fBorg 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    OMG I am totally with you on bras. If you're above a D cup it truly is not optional to pay bottom dollar- you really end up feeling it in your back.
    Another one I splurge on is independent companies for both make up and nail polish. Especially with nail polish though, since I notice that small batch nail polishes chip wayyy less than drug store polish.

  • @libbyreed8588
    @libbyreed8588 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Areas in which I invest are: bras, work shoes, organic food, high end sheets I purchase maybe every 9 years or so, high end towels which I tend to replace every 5 years, kitchen appliances and kitchen tools.

    I agree with dress shoes and running shoes. I have had so many issues with cheap Work flats and shoes so I’ll just save up and look for sales. Any types of good work shoes? I know aerosoles, naturalizer and rockports are good but any other other suggestions? I do like roadrunner for running shoes.

    • @OneBigHappyLife
      @OneBigHappyLife  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've been wearing Brooks GTS as my running shoes for over a decade. I also like all of the shoes brands you mentioned. My secret favorite splurge for pumps is Cole Haan. Their Nike Air pumps are ah-mazing. I have spent hours walking in those shoes with zero issues. I hit up their clearance section in the outlets to get them at decent prices. They are my favorite shoes by far and I have a few pairs that I've owned for 10 years now (and had to have resoled).--Tasha

    I agree massively about shoes. Shoes really changed my perspective on buying expensive things. I used to always be someone who would buy the cheapest anything, because I saw it as the best value. But I had some ankle issues and my doctor recommended I start buying shoes that supported my ankles, which meant expensive $200+ shoes instead of the more cheap $50 shoes I had been buying. First they were more comfortable and offered a lot more support for my ankles. BUT I also discovered they would last a lot longer than the cheap shoes I had been buying. They would last 3-4 years instead of the 6months the cheaper shoes would last. It really changed my outlook on things in regards to quality. I still do not care about buying something where the only thing going for it is a brand-name (will still not touch Apple Products with a 10 foot pole), but I do look for quality when buying things now as they tend to be better value overall.

    The other thing that is completely worth the cost is a small solar panel. It's foldable and charges my iPhone. I bought a battery for it, and the battery can charge my phone twice when it's full. I leave that little folding solar panel outside all day and it charges my phone at night, or if I'm home during the day, it also charges my phone.... One of the best things I ever bought.

    Honestly, that's why I never got into makeup. Finding my shade was such a hassle and I'd have to mix and match etc. I'm actually really glad that was a barrier (even though it's totally unfair) because I can't even imagine how much I have saved (money AND time) from not being a makeup person!

  • @makerPM

    Huge on tools, shoes, and skill items (classes, books, and study material).
    I don't spend on extra though. Like I didn't spend money on a study course for a professional exam, but I bought the materials I thought I needed ($500 book). I also don't buy tools unless I can't get by without doing it and need that particular tool.
    Bras I can agree with (from a guy's perspective). Jeans I get as cheap as comfortable (max $30) since they get ruined quick regardless of quality.

    • @OneBigHappyLife
      @OneBigHappyLife  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am totally with you on jeans. I get whatever is reasonable at Costco. When it comes to tools, I look at the cost of buying the tool and doing it myself vs hiring someone that already has the tool to do it. We also rent tools when that makes the most sense. - Joseph

    I disagree on the part with buying high end tools. Not to say that I don't buy higher end tools, but I own tools from Harbor Freight that have proven to be reliable over the years. I splurge on good dark chocolate and good desserts in general. If I want something, it Should be worth the calories.
    I splurge on buying more than one seat in public transportation to save time. I live in the Caribbean so taxis require a full car to leave the stand. I do need to track my transportation expenses though to make sure I'm not going overboard.
    I should have splurged on a laptop. I bought a refurbished one three years ago and now the battery is kaput. Looking into the most cost-effective way to buy one.
    Oh and I splurge on eyebrow waxing. I have a really good aesthetician who I trust and would rather pay for reliability than a cheap, unpredictable outcome.

      Spending more for something doesn't mean borrowing for it. But it could actually be cheaper in the long run to buy a more expensive item with the difference between the cheap and the quality item being borrowed than it would be to buy a cheap item only to have to replace it soon. It is important to look at the whole picture. - Joseph
