@neilkayton - We agree with you! The Boxster is an awesome car and genuinely affordable if you shop used. The 911 is great, and the icon, but the Boxster's balance is fantastic and superior to the 911 because of engine placement. Thanks for commenting and we hope you'll stick around and watch more of our work!
You would think that after high school, guys would stop obsessing over how they are perceived. If you like the car, drive it. All this talk about MAN's cars...it smacks of compensation.
coming back to this in 2024! hoping to get a 987.2 this weekend! Has been great to see your channel grow. See you at the track new HOD owners! congrats!!
Way back, my dad bought a new '99 Boxster. It had all of 204 HP (or was it 201?) and was quick w/ a 6.1 sec 0-60. This was just a year after I got my license, and the first decent stick shift I ever drove (only one before that was a Hyundai Excel in driver's ed). I remember the feel, the smell, the sound of the engine... When he let me take it out I basically never turned on music... Just listened to that boxer engine sing. One of my goals in life is buy one of my own when I can responsibly...
@SuperDesi45 - The boxster is better balanced and a bit more instinctual (meaning it feels like a part of the driver). The Z4 has more of a classic roadster - long front with the driver at the back - feel and takes a bit more thought to drive fast. Both are fun cars, no doubt. We recommend you go test drive them both as we suspect one of them will speak to you right away. Thanks or watching and commenting!
Hey guys! I drive a 986 2.7 and a z3 2.8 near the Smokies. Ya gotta do some reviews on our tighter, narrower, slower, mountain roads! You have long sweepers that favor more power and faster speeds. Anyway, the Boxster handles like a slot car up to 9/10ths, then spins more easily (center axis) than slides when it looses traction. The z3 slides more easily, but doesn't spin out of control, it just slides the rear end to a 180 if you keep it up. You know what I mean. Takes too many words to explain moment of inertia. The z3 is more fun (and easier to control) on public roads. The MX5 is down on power in the mountains. Arguably more fun on flat roads than z3, less fun when you want to power out of uphill turns than z3.
@GoldDougie I like how you assume that I have no knowledge of the Subaru. My last car was an '04 STi in World Rally Blue. That car was a rocket, and had significant suspension, brake, and engine upgrades. But even so, when I used the EXACT SAME amount of money to purchase a slightly used '05 Boxster once I sold the Subaru, I quickly found that I could post significantly faster lap times with the Porsche thanks to its incredible balance and razor sharp handling.
@@toheedkhan1578 fewer maintenance issues, some, like the IMS, more expensive. Porsche is second most dependable brand after Lexus, ahead of Toyota according to JD Power.
The tough one to find will have sport suspension on the 986 or PASM on the 987, sport seats, and the sport exhaust in the manual. I doubt that this one had any of those.
After driving my 2006 Boxster S for 3 years, I am still having so much fun everytime I am behind the wheel. I do drive it everyday. Now I can drive my wife's 4 doors car. Just feel totally difference.
@fallout3geek - We would say Boxster, as it will be far more fun to drive. The Boxster is an incredible handling package with an awesome manual transmission. The BMW will handle well also, but has more body roll and less precision than the Boxster. But, if you need the utility of backseats then the BMW is going to win. We'd definitely say get the 135i over the 128i, even if you have to go used - the engine/power is much more rewarding.
Love the channel. Funny how you guys delivered a "bland" review, opining that it has "bland" styling, and then gave the car four stars and three and a half stars! Ten years have passed and the first and second Gen Boxsters attained a classic look. I have the '00 Boxster, and four other sporty cars for less than you quoted for this Boxster or for the MX5, 124, or 86 that you all recommend so highly. You're the relative experts, and figured out how to make a living on TH-cam (excellent work). But in my little world, a newer model or version isn't worth the additional cost. So I end up tracking videos and information on cars that have similar market values. So you have viewers that are model year sensitive and want you to compare the latest models, being less price sensitive. And you have price sensitive viewers like me that compare cars in the same price range, less model year sensitive (within fifteen to twenty years). Do price equivalent comparisons, that'll keep the industry on it's toes!
A little while ago i got the opportunity of driving a Boxster and i found it to be a very nice car indeed, it's a very practical car to use on the everyday routine and i think it has good enough overall performace. It's very fun to drive and i don't think it's a chick car by any means.
IMS is a legend of the internet. It was quite uncommon for them to go, but if they did, it would be in the first 30k miles. Porsche had finally fixed the problem by '07/'08 anyway.
JD Powers rates Porsche #2 in dependability year after year behind Lexus by one point and just above Toyota. You may want to disagree, but do you think they're wrong about #1 and #3? Think about it.
0:13 a "chick" car? Really?!? Sorry but Porsche doesn't make "chick" cars. Porsche makes two kinds of cars: sports cars and supercars. If you want a "chick" car, Mercedes makes plenty of them.
you guys have come a long way... im not sure why you said the obvious cliché calling the 986 a "chicks car" you both loved the caymen which is a car based based on that same chicks car, and the overall tone of this vid does not do the boxster justice. thankfully you guys are much better now and make some of the best car content on youtube.
Next time someone calls it a chick car ask him what he drives, and ask him who's in his passenger seat! Odds are, he's a sour grapes hater. Because he's figured out that even : )
@23109VC The 911 turbo handles as well as the boxster. The GT3 more so. There is a reason that there is a saying if it "handles like a Porsche". Personally, I'm thinking about getting a cayman s once I get out of medical school.
I bought a 2006 base with 128k miles, sold it 2 years later with 171k miles on it. The only thing gone wrong during my ownership is the oil/air separator. But replace break pads/rotors and all other maintenances are expensive.
I keep repeating this but: Porsche is second most dependable brand according to JD Power. Below Lexus, above Toyota. Still, don't buy one if you're on a Corolla budget. It's not an economy brand! You get extra, you pay extra. It stops better because it doesn't have Corolla rotors!
@GoldDougie Well call me crazy, but the driver experience is the most important thing to me in a car. The 370z and 350z both felt very soft to me when pushed to the limits. And while the Elise and Exige are both a blast to drive, as well as as significantly lighter than the Boxster, the Porsche simply feels lighter, the chassis feels sharper. I've never felt the slightest bit of understeer, and it simply goes wherever I want to put it. It puts a smile on my face unlike any other, simply put.
Agreed, but if you're only driving twisty mountain roads on the weekend and aren't looking at practicality; if you're looking to replace your motorcycle rides with a car, for whatever reason, then I think the Lotus products are the tickets to ride! (I have the Boxster, shoulda bought a Lotus when I test drove it and before they got out of my price range).
Why can I not watch the Whole Video "50 Years of Porsche"? Keeps saying I have to Pay and that their is an Age restriction. Is it because I'm 42 and I might have a heart attack from all the excitement? Please help.
Thanks for mentioning. When we released that film, TH-cam was in the midst of their movie rental experiment. They have since gone away from it, and we know some people have trouble screening "50 Years of the 911" on TH-cam as a result. The best place to see that or any of our other 5 Feature films is on Amazon Prime. They are available there streaming or on Blu-ray. Thanks for your interest!
Thank you. Will definitely check it out. Been wanting a Porsche my whole life, finally getting the chance to look at a few😁 The 911,912,987 and the 981 just can't make up my mind.
@GoldDougie Actually, the Boxster S pulls the same lateral g's as an Elise (0.97g). Also, remember that a Miata starts at $23,000, while the Elise and Boxster start at $55,000. Ultimately, each car represents a different way to make a fun car: simple british roadster, track day special, luxury roadster.
It's hilarious the amount of people you see calling this Porsche a "chicks car" or a "poor man's car". Respectively, you cannot drive a car in a kitchen, and a poor man cannot certainly afford it. Jokin aside, go call who to drives a Prius that it is a "chicks car" and a Clio a "poor man's" . A Porsche is a Porsche, and like it or not, the Boxter comes at an accessible price, and not only provides a great driving experience as it is way above average in terms of H.PWR. Long live the Boxter !
@GoldDougie And here's the thing= I've had the privilege of driving all three on track, and on a road course, you'll find that you get significantly better laps times even in the standard Boxster. There's more to life than straight line races. So, tell me again how slow it is?
@OWN12S I drove it and im 5'11 and with the top up i had like 2 or 3 inches but it would be more if the seat was down further so I think youll fit but you should test drive one
@GoldDougie And yes, road course lap times are pretty much the universal rating system for overall performance ability to measure braking, handling, balance, and even straight line acceleration and top speed performance.
@RochesterCycling oh thank you so much dude! greatly appreciated! im listening to it right now.. so relaxing.. Bach is surely happy with guys like you who still knows the classics.. :)
how would you guys say the maintenance is for a 2005 or around then boxster is my dad says that no matter what, even if you maintain it to your best ability that everything will go wrong that can go wrong on it, but looking at forums there are those few people that do say that everything breaks but the lot of them say that if you treat them right that it is just the simple things that you would have to do on any other car but they will cost a little more because it is a porsche
Paul had this generation Cayman S (an 07) and it was remarkably trouble free. We generally wouldn't recommend the first year of any model car, but Porsche's in general are very reliable. Watch our long-term series on Todd's Porsche Cayenne. The problem isn't random things breaking, but that when major maintenance is due it can be more expensive than other brands. We recommend an independent Porsche mechanic to save lots of money over the dealer, and if you're buying, be sure you get a pre-purchase inspection. Big services are due on Porsches every 40k miles (40k, 80k, 120k). We hope that helps, thanks for watching!
@EverydayDriver u guys should stop making all these comments defending ur opinions.u dont need to. all these people are upset because they spent money on a car and u said some tiny insignificant detail in an educated and objective review that makes them feel like they spent their money wrong because you didnt give it straight A+'s. i enjoy your videos and respect your opinions. disagreement opens up dialogue. but some people are too immature for that. keep up the good work.
Hey Todd, my chick car '00 Boxster will rip your fan boy 86 in fast sweepers, twisty blacktops, or your chosen track! How's that for a wake up call? Love your work guys. I count on your reviews!
@GoldDougie I'm thinking of getting one of these for my wife... She's smaller at about 5"1", but im almost 6ft. Will i look silly as a passenger in this car? ( im a C5 owner myself)
That is a better explanation, which I can accept yes. Still everyday practicality is subjective as well. It all depends on what you need to do with that car. Taking that into the equation you can find that many people use the 911 as their daily driver, because like the R35 it still maintains a certain practicality. It`s true that, as an owner, I might be biased, but I`ve lived with one for years and am still happy with it. The R35, look aside, is probably one of the few real alternatives though
I truly believe there is no substitute for Porsche. However, the whole allure of Porsche is that it is an outstanding driving experience and feel. When you go tip-tronic or even PDK it ruins it.
Its not even my joke. Jeremy Clarkson is the one who said it on Top Gear. To Porsche's credit they've squeezed everything they can out of that setup and performance wise it beats a lot of its competitors. But have they taken it as far as it can go? The 991 has the length extended and the engine moved more forward. We may end up with a mid engined 911 at some point in the future. I still lust after the R35 Nissan GT-R. IMHO the front midship layout is unstoppable.
You guys need to review the porsche cayman next. Some think its a hardtop boxster but I like to think of it as a superior platform than the 911 that was purposely watered down.
The more track like the road you drive, the better the Boxster. The z4 is easier to "drift" and control. The z4 slides it's rear end out, the Boxster "spins more like a top" past it's limits. But the Boxster grips like a slot car within it's limits. The z4 starts losing traction sooner; also, you feel the turns more because you are closer to the rear axle. Many prefer the sound of a flat six, but that's mostly at 5,000 rpm and above. Some like the sound of an inline six throughout the rpm range. The Boxster has way more trunk/frunk space, but I daily drive my z3 more. If space is what you need, get a fastback hatch back, like a TT. A TT coupe is the all arounder with quattro, dual clutch trans and plenty of space. So many choices, so little garage space.
I don't see how--if you thought the first Boxster was a 'chick car'--that the new one is that much different to become a 'guys car'. The styling is change is not that drastic. (Personally I would drive either one and be confident in my manhood.)
If I hear "chick car" or "poor man's 911" one more time, I'm gonna puke. What a bunch of absolute worthless nonsense. It's just a car. Talk about the freaking car.
Now I get it! You haven`t met a real Porsche driver, but only people who drive Porsche. There is a big difference between those two kinds. I am an owner myself and I`m well aware of the strenghts and weaknesses of my car. I have to, because I live in the alps and weather conditions can change quite quick and dramatically. Usually, up a mountain road, there is nothing faster than a rwd Porsche, but once there is snow it gets tricky. There are models with awd though like the Turbo the GT-Rs rival.
@MaximusRelaximus handling is why u buy a boxtser, u missed it completely. ur comment looks like one of those corvette fan vids where they show those slalom, skidpad, drag, stats but never do laps in a circuit nor drive on winding roads. no offense.
The Boxster will be the regarded as the greatest (non-Miata) convertible of all-time. Only drawback is the crappy CDR-24 audio head unit that Porsche owners have affectionately loved to hate. I drive a 2006 Cayman S.
damn, they sounded different back then. ANd im not comparing it with the 718, the 981 sounds still quite different. It sounds more throaty and wilder than this 987. Is it because this one is a base with the miniature engine?
@EVERYDAYDRIVER I enjoy watching your videos and i appreciate you guys recommending used cars, no one else does that, but i would love it if you guys started to add in things like common problems with owning something like a used Porsche what years to avoid over what milage to avoid ect. If im gonna plop down a ton of cash for a used Boxster off of your recommendation i would like it to be the most informed opinion possible. I have a bunch of ideas, i work in production, would love to work wit u
@JordsterMovies I meant "quick" as in not "fast" ... I left that part out. I've driven much faster cars since, but absolutely nothing with the same level of driving feel (both handling, and the feel of the materials). Now I just need $80k to buy one nicely loaded in Canada ... :P
I never thought I could afford to own a Porsche, at least not for many years. Then I saw this and it made me reconsider that, maybe it might just be possible to have a Porsche (and not one of those heretical front-engine ones) within a couple years of graduating from college, or maybe even before. That lead me to the Cayman, because I've never been a fan of convertibles. I looked it up on Craigslist, and found an '07 for just $25K. I will have a Cayman within five years. Oh yes, I will.
For instance, my ex drove a 650i BMW and the cupholder was a flimsy piece that you would have to stick onto the console next to the gear shifter. I was like WTF? That's unacceptable to me in a $90K car.
@NR92CP yeah, so go buy a lotus elise for the same price? If I spent the cost of the porsche to tune a STI, the STI would be tons faster. And the factory STI might still beat the Boxster. Heres the thing = I've had the privilege to drive an EVO (slower than STI) in an amateur rally with a friend and on a course, you'll find that you get significantly better stage times even in a standard STI. There's more to life than race tracks. So, let me tell you again how slow it is.
I've never owned either one. But I've driven both. They actually don't impress me. The 911 was based off the 356 which was a sporty version of the VW Bug. So it carries the ridiculous engine behind the rear axle layout. Porsche tried to transition from this with the 928 but it didn't sell. So they stuck to an archaic configuration that originated out of cost cutting. It uses a boxer engine too b/c of this layout. That's why Porsches at idle sound like tractors. Doesn't impress me.
Here is some consumer advice: anytime someone calls a car a "chick car," you can be sure that it handles better than nearly everything else on the road. Ex: Mazda MX-5 Miata, Porsche Boxster.
The argument doesn't really hold water as long as the Nissan GT-R exists. That's a car that beats many Porsche variants on track numbers but the "fluff" as you call it is all logically placed and easy to use. I suppose Nissan engineers are more evolved than Porsches ones and drivers of a GT-R are more critical of these things than the philistines that drive Porsches.
I'm not sure what you mean but here here, hooray for you! My son wants a GT-R but they're pricy and I believe maintenance costs are higher, and parts are harder to find and more expensive than for Boxster. I too think the GT-R out performs the Boxster but, (I can't believe I'm saying this) it's uglier than a Subaru. I prefer the looks of my Boxster and z3. So Philistines drive Porsches? Do Hebrews drive GT-Rs?
THere is a HUGE difference between the standard Boxster and a Boxster S in terms of performance. As far a the build quality goes, it is superb. I just sold my Cadillac Escalade. A shitty car by any standard. Driving a Porsche after the Cadi, it's no wonder that Porsche is the most profitable car company in the world, and GM had to be bailed out.
Last time I checked it was less than a second 0-60 between the standard and the S, I'd take an S as a gift, but I wouldn't pay near double in the used market! Define "HUGE difference."
@captainwre Along with making a hybrid option on not only the cayenne but also the panamera, and a new diesel option (a first for porshe im assuming you know nothing about cars so im talking about the diesel engine). But your right, it is a bad car cause the door handles are shitty. Porsche has NEVER had outlandish Ferrariesque or Lamborghiniesque interiors, they have always been subtle and remain unchanged, they are about perfection and performance.
I just got an 05 boxster 987 5 speed...love it. Great sports/commuter car that you can track with little mods. Excellent value for the money

oh thank you so much dude! greatly appreciated! im listening to it right now.. so relaxing.. Bach is surely happy with guys like you who still knows the classics.. :)
how would you guys say the maintenance is for a 2005 or around then boxster is
my dad says that no matter what, even if you maintain it to your best ability that everything will go wrong that can go wrong on it, but looking at forums there are those few people that do say that everything breaks but the lot of them say that if you treat them right that it is just the simple things that you would have to do on any other car but they will cost a little more because it is a porsche
I want one! Love this car
I have a base 2001 boxster and love it
Hey Todd, my chick car '00 Boxster will rip your fan boy 86 in fast sweepers, twisty blacktops, or your chosen track! How's that for a wake up call? Love your work guys. I count on your reviews!
What is the name of the song played during this video?
was that a cop at 2:35?
What's the name of the music in this video?
@GoldDougie I'm thinking of getting one of these for my wife... She's smaller at about 5"1", but im almost 6ft. Will i look silly as a passenger in this car? ( im a C5 owner myself)
If you think you'll look silly you probably look silly in any car. Haha!
(You are what you think philosophy.)
In Ireland you can get those for around 20k euros used. Pretty good value!
@Sharod101 Have you tried driving one? And not just for five secs
The R35, look aside, is probably one of the few real alternatives though
mind if i ask whats the title of that classical music playing? please reply.. thanks.. :)
I truly believe there is no substitute for Porsche. However, the whole allure of Porsche is that it is an outstanding driving experience and feel.
When you go tip-tronic or even PDK it ruins it.
Wait, I don't think the tiptronic version can go 0-60 in under 6 sec.
how much is the cheapest price u could find a boxster ? {i found a bmw z3 for 6,000}
i cannot decide between this or the camaro lt
Depends on where you live: Straight roads and or in town? Get the Camaro. Twisty roads and or in the country? Get the Boxster. No brainer.
Some think its a hardtop boxster but I like to think of it as a superior platform than the 911 that was purposely watered down.
which is better and why
boxster or z4
These cars are amazing, im probably getting one
really liked ours A TON super fun car
I want to trade in my 2012 f30 320d with a 2006 boxster. Is it worth it?
Find a 2009 or newer
Too expensive..
I drive my Boxster to work every day, 50 miles round trip, no problems
If I hear "chick car" or "poor man's 911" one more time, I'm gonna puke. What a bunch of absolute worthless nonsense. It's just a car. Talk about the freaking car.
my friend said he was flooring it and it had no acceleration what so ever, so does this car have that bad of pickup
@MaximusRelaximus handling is why u buy a boxtser, u missed it completely. ur comment looks like one of those corvette fan vids where they show those slalom, skidpad, drag, stats but never do laps in a circuit nor drive on winding roads. no offense.
@Shuffle3956 Classical music is nice for this review.
But, will it blend? That is the question
Me too! same spec as yours also( apart from 19inch wheels) much better than 986 S i had few years ago.... roll on good weather....
@AnimepimpYT they are 18K minimum for a decent one, but you have too get an S if your getting a porker. Which are 30K+ for a good one.
senior accountants make allot of money?
@daibadrumu
Well, nothing does. It doesn't matter if you like a different sound better or not but the sound is pretty unique.
@MrBurberryMan in my country they cost used 30 k
2:33, Is that the police waiting for you? :p
@96integra02 First is "Air" by Bach! and the second piece is "Winter" from The four seasons by Vivaldi ;-) Enjoy the master pieces!!
The Boxster will be the regarded as the greatest (non-Miata) convertible of all-time. Only drawback is the crappy CDR-24 audio head unit that Porsche owners have affectionately loved to hate. I drive a 2006 Cayman S.
Wesley Gonzales n
Ditto on the CDR-24. Appallingly awful for a car of that price at that time. I've swapped mine out for a Carplay unit.
damn, they sounded different back then. ANd im not comparing it with the 718, the 981 sounds still quite different. It sounds more throaty and wilder than this 987. Is it because this one is a base with the miniature engine?
@EVERYDAYDRIVER
I enjoy watching your videos and i appreciate you guys recommending used cars, no one else does that, but i would love it if you guys started to add in things like common problems with owning something like a used Porsche what years to avoid over what milage to avoid ect. If im gonna plop down a ton of cash for a used Boxster off of your recommendation i would like it to be the most informed opinion possible. I have a bunch of ideas, i work in production, would love to work wit u
@Blomar69
The SLK isn't a girls car, ONLY if you get the SLK55
@JordsterMovies I meant "quick" as in not "fast" ... I left that part out. I've driven much faster cars since, but absolutely nothing with the same level of driving feel (both handling, and the feel of the materials). Now I just need $80k to buy one nicely loaded in Canada ... :P
@PGAJay92 you sir, are obviously the proud owner of the poor man's Porsche.
U guys should put this against the s2000, miata & other roasters thanks
Im 23 and I got enough money to buy a Used 2001 Porsche Boxster S!
Im buying this shit!
@bowstrike many new sportscars are. e.g. mercedes SLS is automatic as well.... is it a chick car? i don´t think so ;-)
@blueray301 It's not insanely fast, but it's no slouch either.
bach's air? nice :D
are all these manual?
I never thought I could afford to own a Porsche, at least not for many years. Then I saw this and it made me reconsider that, maybe it might just be possible to have a Porsche (and not one of those heretical front-engine ones) within a couple years of graduating from college, or maybe even before. That lead me to the Cayman, because I've never been a fan of convertibles. I looked it up on Craigslist, and found an '07 for just $25K.
I will have a Cayman within five years. Oh yes, I will.
Did you get it?
For instance, my ex drove a 650i BMW and the cupholder was a flimsy piece that you would have to stick onto the console next to the gear shifter. I was like WTF? That's unacceptable to me in a $90K car.
@Titidiaz Sorry.. it is Summer!! ;D Last movement!!
GRPvids..Amen, you got it 100%.
@SuperDesi45 : Watch my reviews and find out
@bowstrike Ferrari Enzo? 458 italia? But if it's just a standard automatic, that definately is a chick car.
whew. you had me going there man ;)
why not expensive??????
hey guys i was looking through your videos and i noticed........YOU HAVENT REVIEWED A 911
I've never owned either one.
Correct, sir.
En México ya abrieron sus redes sociales y creo que al parecer en Twitter tendrán algunas sorpresas ....deberian seguirlos: @PorscheMexico
i love this car :X:X
Porsche has NEVER had outlandish Ferrariesque or Lamborghiniesque interiors, they have always been subtle and remain unchanged, they are about perfection and performance.
damn it!! this car is >100,000 in australia!! i want to move to america.
