Ferrari Portofino M 2021 review | Autocar

- This is the new for 2021 Ferrari Portofino M, with M for Modificata, or, in English, Modified.
Which is pretty straightforward, really. It's the revised, updated, facelifted, modified version of Ferrari's softest car, the Portofino, a sports car with a folding metal roof.
The modifications are quite broad, and include a power hike to 612bhp, the fitment of an eight-, rather than seven-speed twin clutch gearbox, petrol particulate filters and revised design inside and outside.
In the UK its price is from £175,360 but you can add to that pretty quickly with some options. It's a fast car, though, able to go from 0-62mph in just 3.45sec and on to a top speed of 199mph.
Rivals? Cars, we think, like the Aston Martin DB11 Volante and Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet, or perhaps the Bentley Continental GT. Some of these will be more sporting, others more comfortable.
In that way, it's not unlike the Ferrari Roma we tested the other week you'll find that here • Ferrari Roma v Aston M...

The most under-rated (and most beautiful) Ferrari on the market today. For an 'entry-level' car, what more could you ask for? Power like mad, tour-ability, versatility, gorgeous looks and mystique in quarts, there is not too many reasons to trade-up unless you really have to have the top shelf, almost-a-race-car, performance of the other steeds in the Ferrari stables... and a lot of money with nothing to do. It's the ONLY retractable hardtop on the market that gets that formula just right. Looks great up, looks even better down.
For me it looks nicer than the roma
Right! Much nicer!
According to me
Roma is the one of the worst looking cars on market right now
Roma has the worst ferrari exterior ever
Both cars look extremely bland and boring imho
@@mananagrawal7372 yep, no convertible option either
@@metalthrashingai2238 yeh just money makers , the passion and soul has been lost out of ferrari, they have become just another brand .
I would rather have this than the roma
Wow, what a rich💵 guy.😎🤑.
Something about the roma simply just doesn't work. It is not appealing at all😑
Also known as the coma
The Roma is just weird!
And you would be right
I understand it was raining; however, how many times can you repeat the same footage?! I counted at least three. Love your videos by the way.
Probs had less than half a day with the car as well, not easy at all to drive, script, present, & capture all the footage in that time
I counted four. After the third I told myself I’d stopped watching if it came up again, so...
About to write the exact same thing. Ridiculous. Even some garage shots would be less monotonous.
You lot are getting free content from a reputable motoring journalist and you’re still complaining 😂. Go buy the magazine if you want better quality videos
@@nightnomad635 Why do you think that this is free? You/- we, the viewers, are paying with your data! And Autocar gets paid by the number of views
Excellent descriptions !!! You nailed just what information I’d want to hear about the car dynamics. Thxxxxxxxxxx
To the point review, i like it. Plus points for the Twin Pine Mall t-shirt.... Excellent taste.
i like your original descriptions!
612 horses...entry level...!
I was invited to test drive this recently on a sunny day. It’s wonderful & would be a capable daily driver. I liked putting the roof down up to 27mph which is handy if stuck in slow traffic. It’s more than fast enough for today’s speed limited roads & could be fun on a track. I’ve not stopped thinking about it! I own a 1988 Mondial 3.2 like Chris Harris owns & I’d still keep that tho as well if possible, the Portofino M gives less expense on repairs!
Zero expense on repairs. 7 year free maintenance and warranty included in the price.
Love the back to the future tee!!
It does look more elegant to me! 👍🏼
Super video Matt, as always. Detailed analytical analysis without theatrical fluff 👍
Is that a Back to the Future reference I spot! Nice T-shirt :D
Thanks for the informative video! New watch Matt? What is it I can’t quite place it.
This is a really beautiful car. I could see picking one of these up used in a few years for $50k off.
Idk, for me it looks like already old. I prefere the Roma style.
Not if the government and ev drivers has something to say about it
@@mikuelable BS. Governments are banning new ice sales. Nothing about the used market.
@@stesegreto656 I wouldn't be allow to drive it 2035 ........ps I would love the Roma with 6 speed manual with synthetic fuel porsche is developing ....God save the engines
Gorgeous drop top GT
This is my actually car after a California DCT (2012-2018) and a California T (2018-2020). Portofino is absolutely the best in Ferrari production, for its ability to be a double car in one, a gorgeous spider or an elegant berlinetta. Very upgrated in interior comfort, in doubleclutch sequential gear speed, in handling versus Californias ... really a great car both you drive quite in saturday morning shopping or in Monza circuit. Portofino hasn't competitors all around the world. Portofino is THE BEST FERRARI for everyday maximum satisfaction. Great !!!
This car is so underrated imo. Love the channel and awesome tshirt! You do a great job with every review and I look forward to what you have to say. Have a great week from the USA.
Underrated? Why underrated ? It's probably the blandest most soulless car ever from ferrari
@@paulthomson9014 I don’t agree with that and it’s why I said what I did. If I had the same opinion as you I wouldn’t call it underrated.
@@ryanguercio7061 that's fine , I was asking WHY you think it's underrated
@@paulthomson9014 because they dont sell many of them and they are more on the sporty end of the gt line. It has the best acceleration and handling of the cars in the class and I would take it over a Continental gt. The car gets little media coverage in comparison to the other cars in the class and I think it looks great.
@@ryanguercio7061 fair enough.
That brownish leather 🔥🔥🔥
Awesome t-shirt!!
The design is enormous
Ohhh that is the one of the most beautiful looking cars ever made!!
This is my favorite Ferrari in current production. It's beautiful and will age gracefully.
Love the new design of the portofino very nice interior very powerful very muscular 😎
This video was all about that Integrale at the beginning!
Yeah, but then it moved onto the F50...
Beautiful Corvette
I prefer the yellow integrale, in the background!
The car actually looks like Phenom!
That is a pretty pretty car!
Can we hear the engine for once? Went through a Ferrari review without so much as revving it.
Thanks for letting me know, clicking away
He missed the part of engine specifications as well. Sloppy review.
its a modern ferrari, it has no sound
Soon Ferrari owners will be doing engine swaps with Priuses in order to make their Ferraris sound more aggressive.
My previous vote for the best looking car ever was the 2012 Vanquish, which eventually evolved into the Vanquish S, with the 6.0 V12 and gen 3 8-speed ZF gearbox, an truly enjoyable car notorious for its excellent exhaust note from reasonably low revs.
I think Zagato correctly noted the rear lights of the Vanquish needed rounded taillights, although that designs ended lacking in elegance.
Amazingly, Ferrari managed to make an equally beautiful car, if not even better looking one, in the Portofino M. But there's so much more to it. Excellent dynamics, very modern interior, practicality, convertible without sacrificing nothing when the roof is up. Best of all, for someone that can afford cars in that price bracket, the Portofino M isn't an limited edition car attainable by few, but actually the least expensive Ferrari.
When Ferrari stopped working with Pininfarina, it seemed they lost the plot with exterior design. It's good to see the refinement is back with cars like the Portofino and the 488 Pista.
These look alot better in the flesh
Some day i will buy this
Still looks bold, Italian and exciting, even on a rainy day in Swindon.
adverts are just killing the enjoyment - constant and the same. Really like the look of this for an 'entry' car!
I want to like these videos more, but they are just void of excitement...I would be so amped to drive a ferrari
Au contraire, in a world of overt, pretentious, fake "amp" and "excitement" filled supercar reviews, it was refreshing to see a plain, facts only, 'Harry's garage' like review on a Ferrari.
That, was one of your best reviews you've ever done. Great job.
Wtf 😂😂
Nice Back to the Future shirt.
This new Lexus is so nice!
I admit, I see the similarities between this and the LC500, but that is in no way a bad thing, as the LC500 is drop dead gorgeous.
Lovely car this, really handsome.
Though this may be irrelevant, as I said before about the Roma v Contimental v DB11 video, I’m sure Ferrari could have easily eked out an extra 1mph to get to 200mph with the extra power, but they probably decided not to for the Portofino M seeing as it’s supposed to be one of the entry level cars in Ferrari’s model line-up, along with the Roma.
I would have liked more revs pls
My best Ferrari car
A fabulous buy after a year when the first owner takes the initial depreciation hit !
Lmao not with the petrol ban in the uk in 10 years, with be worth a mint in 15-20 years
It barely does
If you're coming to your first over 550Hp automobile, which also happens to be an exotic car (meaning really expen$$ive car), this is the perfect entry point.
If this is your first 550+ Hp engine, you're probably coming from a front engined, rear wheel drive car, which probably also had front weight bias , and a front/high CG.
This is a way better transition car, than to get straight into a mid-engine or rear-engine high Hp car.
Those will have lower and better CG, true , but usually have a snappy personality mid-corner ( specially if you're either trail braking for too long or are used to quick lifting on the throttle anywhere from corner entry to mid appex, a behavior which front engine cars are more forgiving of ) , additionally the polar moment of inertia of a car with main mass located behind the driver will easily ruin your day with its push-in tendecies in tight sweeps and cornering maneuvers.
This design will be far more forgiving.
Is that an Integrale Evo in the background?
wow this is pretty power car.
I own a 992 S Convertible and I can assure you it's not at the relaxed end of the scale unless you love an uncompromising ride even in comfort mode. The 14 way seats are poor too and I've had enough of it after an hour of driving!
I’ll just get the older version, this thing looks EXACTLY the same!
They should of at least given it the display from the Roma.
That’s my option though...
The portofino Roma style face lift has been leaked and its coming next year I think.
@@MrElmostudios Dude, you are amazing. Never forget that!
It's the most underrated ferrari
I see a yellow Delta HF 😍😍😍
Nice corvette
Do I see a yellow lancia delta integrale in the background
How many Ferrari and McLaren models have been released in the last 2 years??
This might be a very stupid question, but does anyone know why the footage of the Ferrari in dry conditions always shows it with it's lights flashing? The last cutaway also shows the rear lights flashing as well.
Something to do with the led brake lights and video frame rate I believe
@@rajjy1976 Really? That's interesting. I've never noticed that before in any other video.
nice Seiko
1:06 OMG F50
Portofino is 4 years old and still largely ignored by youtube
maybe entry level, but without comparison the best looking of all the ferrari line-up.
Do you know how to use capital letters. Shame on you.
@@zuti071 yes i know its a mess:)
It’s not over decorated. Simple looks great.
Isn't the Roma's base price very similar to this?
Sounds like a better deal to just get the convertible.
Not that Ferrari buyers are looking for value.
But the Roma has a new chassis, and new tech all around and it's a different purpose altough they feel similar
"The interior feels like an upscale Fiat 500 not necessarily one made in Mexico but rather more like something from Poland where they build the 595"
It’s like if I had to get a track-version of my EOS :3
Wasn’t stated, but seems to have that more refined character that made the Roma further from the Conti; w12 speed convertible vs this!? Ermagherd
At some point, due to crazy emissions regulations, they will fit a 1,000hp engine on an entry level Ferrari, just to have performances of a 20 years old entry level Ferrari. These engines are crazy powerful, but at the end the driving experience was probably better a couple of decades ago.
Anyone want to bet that within about 2 years time a Roma Cabriolet debuts and replaces the Portofino...... Ferrari is on a rapid life cycle nowadays and all about turning units 💰
great video Matt!
what wristwatch are you wearing?
I like it
Great video???? Lol. It was a poor video using the same exterior shots over and over again.
The normal Portofino wasn't ugly, but I think this looks a lot better. The colour choice helps as well.
Its almost identical....????
Sooooo in UK is raining an i live in Romania where today is 37 degres celsius and tomorow 39 send some rain please pffff :(
Cost?
Isn't this the guy from the car guys?
when Ferrari make practical daily use car blows me away.
Unless it was recorded over a two day period the time on the watch and tee shirt crinkles suggests that it was driven first and then the cabin was reviewed after.
Its a car review and it doesnt even show how the roof go down. come on.
This is my MOASS car
Guys, i don't need 2 c the car drive 10x through the same puddle of water.
Wow
I think u havent seen Indian Roads 4:05
How hard is it to remove those stupid filters??
🏴🥃🥃🏴
Oh I love it, in the Aston Martin it’s plastic but in the Ferrari it’s lightweight 🙄🤣
What is that watch
Yes, it is a watch
What's the paint name?
Red
wagwarn G
But for the same price you can get a F12
You're right, the car market is a strange one
I would bury and bug the prior version without the particulate filters. I swear Europe is hell bent on ruining cars
Is the Portofino M going to eat the Roma's lunch?; not sure how Ferrari justify two broadly similar cars, admittedly one without a fixed roof, with a £75,000 price difference.
I keep making this comment but obviously I am a voice in the wilderness! A review of a "GT car" should at least touch on accommodation and boot space or am I wrong?
More screens and more power..UGH when will this mindless race END!!!! We want something unique with character.
Well padded and cushioned seats would be most welcome too! Why does Ferrari insist on bum numbing seats?
that delta integrale is looking lit
This looks more of a Ferrari, than the colour sensitive body on the Roma...
That shirt is heavy Doc.
Package seems better than Roma, however as has always been a downside with the entry level Ferrari there is a lack of engine note -- and because of that it just isn't a Ferrari IMHO!
Entry level car with 612hp yeah right. Lol
It is almost as good looking as the original F type....the roof is cool, but I'd rather have a pair of F types and 100k in the bank for a winter beater... All of the F's would be awd too. At least it lacks the haptics of the Roma...that car will depreciate way faster than anyone can imagine as it is just awful inside.
Screw the ferrari, I'll take the LANCIA all day every day.
Looks like an old Peugeot from the front
Why are the Autocar reviews always so dull?
same mistake as so many Car Manufacturers these days. We don’t need MORE power or MORE gears or 5 MODES or MORE touchscreens.
Lovely shape but 350BHP is enough. Manual H gate gearbox REAL analogue dials. That’s what PEOPLE want. that’s why a 1960s Ferrari similar shape slower no creature comforts goes for £millions.
Keep the reviews on point, and less of your subjective fluff.
Looks too much like a corvette to me! Prefer the Roma that looks more like a Jaguar F Type
