Caudata (Salamanders) really have some of the most diverse morphologies of any animals. It's fascinating how they've evolved to live in variations of the same swampy kind of environments... and they're all so cute!
Imagine how many unknown species of Siren have been misidentified as Lesser and Greater Sirens. The Reticulated Siren for example. They all look so similar at a distance and in dirty water.
I wouldn't worry about her small size. In the wild they do get pretty long but in captivity they are known to stay a good bit smaller in most tanks. Although if you get that bigger tank she may grow.
(MY GREATER SIREN SALAMANDER) Hi My Name is Joshua and I found a Greater Siren when having my pond doug deeper almost 10' deep. It was mistaken as a walking catfish at first, but when picking it up I noticed front legs, 4 toes on each limb it's about 3 foot long and almost if not 2"+ thick. I put it in a 100+ gallon tank with about 16' of PVC 2" size with 10 up spouts for easy in & out moving. I've been feeding it raw chicken and fish and thawed frozen shrimp it likes the chicken mostly... It hangs out of the spouts and it opens it's christmas tree gills and hangs there for hours ands hours while taking gulps of air from the surface. I'm wondering if there's any info on tank keeping...detailed info and keeping them healthy able to heal if any small injuries and I'm wondering if salt additive for healthy freshwater tank care is safe for him/her I don't know I haven't tried to look up the TOGA/SKIRT??? To see but I'm curious to know the head is small or continuous to the tip but remember it's over 3 foot long...It allows me to pet it but I choose to use a stick or a stainless steel feeding rod it likes it because it comes up towards the surface so that I can rub it further down and around when it turns side to side motion... This winter when it got cold and the tank heaters were not setup yet it went in the PVC maze underground I made. It was 4 days I didn't see it at all not for AIR or FOOD, then 1-1/2 of a week went by and I was so worried that it was rotten dead in the PVC tunnels when to tank heater got the water to stabilize at the 76-78 Deg. temp set it came on out and looked for some food while I was getting worried/sick not seeing it I started to read on it some more I never read anything saying if cold water goes so low it will go into a state of hibernation!!! it used a word I did not understand but the definition described if drout of serious water loss it will dig deep and pause it's living "life" and when conditions favor "life" it wakes up... I haven't put my videos or footage out on TH-cam yet ...
Hi there, I’m very interested in eventually getting a Greater Siren but have been having trouble finding much information online. I’d love to learn more before I think about getting one, this video was very informative. I’d love to read any informational sources you have on Siren husbandry.
I have since given Nessy to a new home, but strongly encourage visiting caudata.org and connecting with the community there with your questions! The people on there are lifestyle caudate parents and will have way more answers than I ever would!
She is really beautiful! Are you positive she isn't a lesser siren. They don't grow to a tank size. They grow to the size they are meant to be. My oldest lesser siren is the same age as yours and is 21 inches long.
I counted her costal grooves, and she's definitely a greater siren. Sometimes they just don't grow that big :/ but that's okay. She can be my cute little gimpy baby. I really do think it might have something to do with her tank size honestly, because aside from that she eats and behaves like a normal siren
How do you know it's sex??? I've got a Greater Siren Salamander it's over 36"+. I'm in South Florida where I found it while digging out my pond. It in a 150gl aquarium and the water is hard water. Raw shrimp, sinking turtle food is her food.

I've found plenty of lesser sirens, but I haven't found a greater siren yet.

I live in Virginia, and they have one of those at Three Lakes Park.

I did end up getting a bigger tank, but i think maybe she's topped out?
Beautiful animal.
We just found 2 lesser sirens! Cool vid thanks!

Very informative :)
Ive had it happen,my sirens jumping out of their tank. they had hiding spots and clean water
Get sand and live plants and drift wood... Keep the rocks for decoration
One of my aquarium super-geniuses adopted her from me and she's got a set up with live plants and stuff now too!

The best source I can recommend is caudata.org!
Also for a bit more reference you could refer to axolotle care which is very similar
Great info for sure!
Where do you live? I caught 3 in the pond on my property in south Florida. I kept one and I have had it for almost a year.
What’s the ph in the tank
I have two pet sirens and I have a question I was wondering if you could help with! Any way I could email you?

Can you keep two together of the greater sirens
That’s an amphiuma.
No it’s not, it lacks a set of back feet. Thus a siren
Yes, it is a siren and it has zero back feet lol
How do you know it's sex???

She's found a new home, but I had her sexed by a friend who owned salamanders for like twenty years. I have no idea how he did it!
