@@MrSuperpatoo I play classics guitar and my son is a Symphony Orchestra player ( clarinet). This competition are not good for our instrument. It separate classic guitar from the music world. The judge from this competition should be musicians from other instruments, with music scores with them. Also requires an ensemble performance with other instruments. Put a classics guitar player in rock, jazz or any other music group and see what happens. Can we play first sight maybe not... Can we play by ear maybe not.... Can we improvise maybe not. You get the point.
Oh for gawdsakes, can't we have proper recordings of these astounding instrumentalists!!?? Why is it that these presentations have such inferior recording tech??
There's a few things at play here. They did not want an obstructed view of the performance. Hence the mic is very low to the ground. The mic looks like it might be a Telefunken M60 or similar pencil condenser mic. These are very nice microphones. They want to portray a natural uncompressed sound. I imagine it sounded beautiful in the auditorium. What the board captures will not be nearly as robust as what is projected from the speakers and into that resonant hall. Honestly, it sounds beautiful to me. This isn't a studio recording. Far more natural sounding. They could have mic'd the room but that would introduce a lot more audience noise than is already present.
Jo Moreels Gould is best pianist ever for me too. But Gould's legendry performances Can not be compared to anyone. I'm turksh like Celil Refik Kaya, but Kaya's performanses not as considered as Gould's...

His playing is beyond superb, and he is amongst my very favourite of young players. However I don't care for the sound of his instrument, it certainly has great dynamic range but, as with others with its style of construction, it is a one trick pony in the timbre department.
What I observe are marginal differences between players where I see little new. Take Cataluna from Albeniz for example. Manuel Barruecco has set the standard and since then many have started using it. But all those results do not add a new artistic element to what M.B. did in the eighties. No matter how well some people play, the differences between these covers are marginal, predictable and I boring to my feeling. This discussion goes further than just this competition. It It is about uniformity, artistry, personal and musical development. I think that because everyone wants to look alike (unlike players like Bream, Yepes, Segovia and Williams who are / were authentic in their own way and follow their own path) the artistic element of individuality and deepening is hardly ever entered. wanting to understand the underlying reason, superficial reactions come in such as: you can turn off the button or I hear no Asturias, well ...
