Well that was ridiculous. The real problem turned out to be a selection problem between Google and Samsung message apps

i had to disable google messages and use Samsung messages - still not 100% resolved I don't think. Samsung phone is TRASH, not receiving SMS is PATHETIC. also was told not to use 5G and not to update samsung messages app
