- Our next production at Shakespeare in the Vines is "A Winter's Tale", wherein one scene involves a large bear. We could rent or build a cheesy bear costume, but we decided on building a two-person-operated puppet. It allows the actors to get in and out with the bear quickly and be ready for their next cues without having to climb out of a suit.
I start at the head, using an expanded polyurethane foam head for a black bear. I want this puppet to be more bulky and dramatic, so I'm adding mass using craft foam sheets, which were 33 cents each. I cut out shapes that enhanced contours in some areas, using high-temperature hot glue. The heat softens the foam as I shape it to make a smooth surface.
The next videos in this series will demonstrate the armatures I will make for the arms, paws, shoulder blades, and neck.
The black bear change-out head (SKU W-222-88CM) can be found on the Research Mannikins, Taxidermy Supply website, specifically here: rmi-online.com/.... They did not sponsor this video in any way, I just found their price the most reasonable.
Pretty freaking awesome mister forensic bear reconstructor. I am interested in seeing the finished product for sure.
I'm working this one for sure to be awesome especially since it might only be seen briefly. It has to have an impact.
