When I first started watching Dan’s videos I noticed an immediate difference almost the next day. Keep it up Dan! Also, wetting my beard a touch before oil and heat is a life changer for people with really curly hair!
My beard and mustache love the heat. I don't think I would still have a beard if it was not for my heated brush and hairdryer. I use heat 7 days a week with no issue for the last 2 years. Use your 5 min to watch or re-watch some Dan C videos
The simplest advice is often the best. Each person will need to find their own routine, it's a personal journey and results will vary. I can say these techniques have just provided me with the best outcome. Out of the shower I towel dry, put the oil in with clean fingers and spread it around. I then go over it with a boars head brush, just a pass in each direction. I then use one of my combs to brush it out. I wait five or more minutes then proceed with a blow dryer and heat brush on medium to low heat. I do this every day and my beard is softer, thicker and healthier than ever.
Awesome video as always brother! I use heat literally everyday! Without heat I honestly don't think I would've let my beard grow to this length. This channel changed my beard game forever!
I started using a heated brush roughly 2 months ago and it's an absolute game changer. It takes a few attempts to dial it in to how you want it, but man, my beard is so much better off after using heat!
This is so important, and helped me so much! I was using a heat protectant spray, using heat, and then applying oil. Now I have learned that it is unnecessary, and a waste of time. Now that I am using heat and oil only, my beard feels and styles even better.
Use heat twice a day always follow these rules (learned by the Trusted Teacher) and my beard is always soft 👍 good analogy by the way with the frying pan!
I just got my first bar of Honest Amish Extra Grit beard soap yesterday because of one of Dan’s videos that I watched a while back and I feel like my beard still smells like black licorice through a night’s sleeping and this morning’s application of beard oil. So thank you for the recommendation Dan as always your advice is outstanding 👍
@@DanCBearded thanks. I can’t wait until my beard grows to the length of yours. I think I’m currently a little shy of 3”. I guess I should quite trimming it 🤦♂️
My heated brush is absolutely the best investment I've made in my beard! I love it. I've always waited 10 minutes after applying oil before using my heated brush. I'll try 5 minutes to see if I can tell any difference.
Heat is a must on my beard! I work from home so don't do it every day but any time I go out I use heat. It helps me dial in my styling and it also feels much softer after applying heat.
The heat helps with styling my short/medium length beard. The last couple months I’ve been waiting 5 minutes after applying oil, and the results are better than when I used a hair dryer right away.
Hey Dan great segment. I’ve found with the few oils I’ve used that the Beard brand oil seems heavier and I can use 3 shakes out of the bottle versus 7 drops of the Whiskey & Hardtack oil for similar results. The heavier oil lasts better for the day for me but I like both pretty well with a heated brush. I towel dry after a shower and wait about long enough to walk into my bedroom to put on a shirt and then apply oil. Wait for a bit as recommended then straighten. Great advice, keep it up.
Awesome! I will say, any quality beard oil will do just as good, if not better, of a job for that heat protection. Don't be afraid to go with your beard oil of the day
Been following your method for over year. Absolutely awesome! I’ve had to adjust the amount of oil but more importantly that time frame cause when waiting too long or forgetting to apply heat all together, it can just nest up all together and feel worse than before your shower. Shower - oil - get dressed - heat/style
@Dan C Bearded I just had a similar discussion with lady and she was like I need to be using some heat protection spray. Thankfully I haven’t because I stick to this rule and spritz some water onto the beard before applying heat. Thought for a video idea is going over the flash or smoke point and heat protection for common carrier oils especially for beards where heat is applied daily.
The heated brush if goin for a straighter look is the way to go, ive had a couple fancier heated press combs that was recommended (too hot), the best I've used is just the wild willies beard straightener from Walmart, the thing does wonders, it's the best 20 bucks I've spent. I shower, blow dry, then oil, wait 5 minutes or so then straighten, and apply butter/balm, works just fine for me. That Detroit butter is still the best in my book, just don't know which oil is exactly the best just yet too many out there, I like the reuzel brand balm if needin somethin with a little more hold.
My sweet spot is approaching 10 min. Just under 10. I have tried decreasing the amount of oil and waiting less time but I just find using 1 dropper to be the perfect amount and hitting that 7-8 min mark perfect. I like to go past 5. But not ever over 10. Perfect sweet spot where my brush glides and my beard isn’t too greasy or too dry.
I’m more in the 8-10 minute camp just how it works with my normal morning routine but never less than 5 minutes and never more than 15. Oil and comb the damp beard right after drying off from the shower, then finish getting dressed, apply moisturizer to non bearded parts of face and bald head, brush teeth and finish off with the heated brush butter and final styling
Sometimes if I'm feeling nervous I'll spray a bit of 'heat protect' mixed with the beard oil I apply before blow drying, then I balm or butter after the dryer.

I give a little spray of water to my beard about 30 seconds before I apply beard oil. I have found this helps with the absorption of the oil before the heat.
You said you have been using heat for 2 years now everyday. Do you remember if your beard dried fast before 2 years ago. I’ve read using heat changes hair porosity. That’s the one thing that worries me with heat is one day my beard wil be like straw and there won’t be any product in the world that would soften it up . I’ve been using heat almost everyday 5-6 days a week I like it a lot too lol. It really only takes 5 minutes or less with a blow dryer and it helps so much with everything Dan talks about in this video.
@@shabby1436 not only did my beard dry faster prior to using heat it would curl up and have a wirey type of feel. Almost like a grey hair type texture. I notice if I spray water now it absorbs nicely in my beard. Prior to heat if I sprayed water it did not absorb as well
Very interesting information. I've been waiting 10-15 minutes after oil to use a hair dryer with comb and brush. I have had some snags and i hate to admit it but there could have been some breakage as well. Gonna keep a closer eye on the clock from now on. As always, thanks so much Teach!
Love your videos Dan, this is my first beard and my routine is a lighter oil applied to a barely damp beard, waiting 5 minutes with the beard all brushed out and crazy looking, then blow dry on low heat up first and then down followed by balm or butter that's unscented with a few extra drops of scented oil.
I've found that I need to make multiple adjustments depending on the oil I use, further complicated by a beard that's partially gray (my photo doesn't show this because it washed out lol). Fable's thicker viscosity is my go-to, but it takes a little longer for me to absorb. Beard Octane absorbs almost immediately into the gray, as does a bird oil like J's or Mythical. If I'm not using bird oil, I tend to add a couple extra drops to the heavy gray areas. It evens the feel throughout my front and sides and makes it all way more consistent.
I have a very similar experience with my ginger beard. Ginger jamboree is soaked up almost instantly. I usually use 25-50% more of it than I do honest Amish premium. Bahawat is very similar to the premium. Detroit grooming and bad donkey aren't quite as light as beard octane, but I do tend to use 10-20% more of those than I do the thicker oils. I haven't tried fable's stuff yet, but it's on the list. Adding a little castor oil to the lighter stuff really seems to help out a lot. I am bald, too, and I usually wipe what is left on my hands on my head. I haven't had to use aftershave since I started doing this, but because of how good some oils are at accelerating hair growth, I did have to switch from shaving my head every 3-4 days to every 2-3 days. It's a tradeoff I'm happy to make, as I don't have to use or buy aftershave anymore, and I would just be rubbing the excess oil into my elbows and feet. My ginger skin was always really prone to razor burn, even when using a really good aftershave, like Nivea. I haven't had razor burn since the second I started using excess oil in its place, though. Crazy, pleasant side affect. Lol. Any suggestions on what works well with drier beards, besides fable?
Rotating in bird oils really changed things for me. Mythical beard's legend blend is fantastic. It has emu, Jamaican black castor, and meadowfoam. I do also like J's Essential's emu blend. Both coat the gray/ginger hairs REALLY well.
Nice! I've never tried anything with bird oils before. I do like black castor oil, though. I think the black seed oil that's in the honest Amish and bahawat are amazing.it really changed the game for me when I switched from the pure honest Amish to the premium after hunting season.

Been watching you’re channel for about a good month now after deciding to grow a beard and “ actually care for it” I,m using Beard Octanes Ginger Jamboree oil and balm. Love them both. My question is. Do you prefer heat brush or the blow dry method better?
Just used the blow dryer for the first time today it came out pretty good. Would it be okay to use heat twice a day I shower in the morning and once when I get home from work and if I use butter do you use butter first then heat or heat then butter. Plan on getting a heated brush in the near future
Hey Dan, I've been applying oil AND a small amount of beard butter before a heated brush. Is using a little beard butter before a heated brush in anyway dangerous for my beard hairs? I seem to get a nice soft and straight beard from it. Please advise.
I have a counter-question for this one: Is there ever too much time to let beard oil stay in your beard before applying beard butter or balm? I tend to do my shaving and beard care at the same time after my shower. I have a shaving soap bowl with agitators in the bottom to get my soap ready within 1 - 2 mins, then I apply the beard oil and work it in with my brush, then shave, wipe off the sides of my face (not touching my beard) and then I use beard balm or butter. I would bet that by the time I am done with my shave after applying beard oil it is around 6 - 8 minutes, so nothing too crazy; however, sometimes my brush may take me 3 - 5 extra mins to get a good lather going in my bowl.
I know this question isn’t related to this video but are there any negative effects to putting unscented beard oil on your lips for chapped lips? I absolutely hate the feel of chapstick and lotions. I use unscented oil on my dry skin but I get horrible chapped lips working outside would the oil help them or should we keep that away from our mouth
@@DanCBearded thanks! I guess my real question is what do you do if you feel you’ve waited too long? Redampen with water and reapply some oil? I do feel it’s been too long sometimes. Cheers and happy Easter 🐰🐇🐣
So after applying oil and waiting five minutes before I apply butter, my beard is usually dry already. Is it ok to spray a little water on my beard to help spread the butter, even though i already oiled?

Been watching you’re channel for about a good month now after deciding to grow a beard and “ actually care for it” I,m using Beard Octanes Ginger Jamboree oil and balm. Love them both. My question is. Do you prefer heat brush or the blow dry method better?
Both! Check this video out: th-cam.com/video/x687Luhq_fI/w-d-xo.html
Just watched the video! So using the heated brush daily is ok as long as you apply your oil as stated I this video?
Correct!
Awesome! Thanks again Dan. Keep up the great work!!
Just used the blow dryer for the first time today it came out pretty good. Would it be okay to use heat twice a day I shower in the morning and once when I get home from work and if I use butter do you use butter first then heat or heat then butter.
Plan on getting a heated brush in the near future
I do not recommend heat twice a day. That is really starting to push it
Hey Dan, I've been applying oil AND a small amount of beard butter before a heated brush. Is using a little beard butter before a heated brush in anyway dangerous for my beard hairs? I seem to get a nice soft and straight beard from it. Please advise.
Totally fine!
@@DanCBearded Thanks Dan!
Once the beard is too dry, that is when it is too much time. I hope that makes sense!
Not at all, oil and butter are great for your lips! I HATE chapstick and lotion as well
@@DanCBearded I don’t know how women wear lipstick if it’s anything like chapstick uggh that’s the worst felling I’ve ever felt
What’s the maximum time you can wait between oil and heat? You said it could be 7, but what’s the max? Thanks for the video!
It would be more about feel. If it feels like the oil is totally absorbed in, then it is too long
@@DanCBearded thanks! I guess my real question is what do you do if you feel you’ve waited too long? Redampen with water and reapply some oil? I do feel it’s been too long sometimes. Cheers and happy Easter 🐰🐇🐣
@@JAinMorocco absolutely! I just use a spray bottle, add a little oil, wait just a tad bit, and then use heat
Whoop 🙌
There it is!
So after applying oil and waiting five minutes before I apply butter, my beard is usually dry already. Is it ok to spray a little water on my beard to help spread the butter, even though i already oiled?
Totally fine!
whats heat
Blowdryer and/or heated brush
But how long should I apply heat?
This video should be perfect for that question: th-cam.com/video/GFp7Lt9HVKk/w-d-xo.html
95% of what I've learned for beard care,, has come from your channel Dan. Enjoy Disney buddy.
Thank you so much Chris!
Video pops up as I just put oil on 🤣🤣🤣 waiting 5 minutes now.. Always stick to the 5 min wait time .
🤘💥🤘
haha perfect timing!
I'll put it simple: If it wasn't for my beard brush, I probably would have shaved by now.
Same here!
haha dan has a dumbledor beard like from harry potter!
No way, I have that wizard beat!
