Although it’s not commonly emphasized in modern training, Aikido principles and techniques all assume that everyone is always armed with one or more edged weapons (because, in historical Japan, they would have been). Once you add razor sharp blades of various lengths to the mix, no one wants to kick, punch or shoot in to move to grappling on the ground anymore. In fact, if you search on TH-cam for Gracie Jiu Jitsu street self-defense, you might find the old gem from the 1980’s with Royce and Rickson demonstrating techniques against knife and baton attacks. In fact. so much so that the two martial arts might even be confused for one another by an uneducated observer. However, the two are separate and distinct. To Morihei Ueshiba, Aikido's founder, Daito-Ryu with its compendium of thousands of discrete techniques in its transmission scrolls, was too complicated and unwieldy. Under stress and full of adrenaline, it's unlikely that the brain can fully assess the immediate situation and yield technique number 8,342 in time as the optimal solution to the current combative threat. Rather, to Aikido's founder, discrete techniques did not exist. Instead, he relied on a set of essential principles, which could be dynamically combined on the fly, as the situation required, to form suitable techniques. Im imagining that most of the people who take the Piss out of Seven Segal and Aikido-dont actually do martial arts..it does look a bit faked when he puts an arm lock on and they roll with the arm lock becaus thats how you are trained to avoid getting you arm broken..in Judo, Ju Jitsu and Aikido..you learn how to roll out of... and go with... what ever kind of technique is used against you in a training scenario because if you didn't you would get seriously injured.... for instance with arm bar across the throat if you didn't throw your self backwards into a break fall..your Adams apple would be knocked into your throat most probaly killing you.as you wouldnt be able to breath....if you know what you are doing you can pull it back out again. Just watch any of Steven's first 4 or 5 films to see the awesome power of Aikido in action..They dont give Black belts away like confetti they are really hard won rewards for years of hard work and dedication to you chosen martial art and to get anything above a 5th dan is only for absolute Best

In an MMA-type event, he would go down as quickly and effortlessly as his students go down in this dance. In all of his online videos, the attacker only attacks with one hand, and leaves the other hand down by his side. I wonder what would have happened if any of them tried a left hook, or left cross while Steven twisted their right arm?

When i watched it 10 years ago, i have no clue about it cause i'm a TKD guy but after 10 years with japanese jujutsu and i watch this video again. Wow he's really good at breaking balance and his partner was good too . Not easy stuff but useful in multiple attackers cause you can not handle all at once

'ran at him with his arms out', that's one of a great many attack forms (ryo-katadori: attacker tries to control tori by grabbing both shoulders (or the sleeves at shoulder height)); the second uke was using a different attack and NOT 'running with his arms out' (chudan-tsuki, straight punch/stab to the body). The 'running at him with arms out' is just often used because it's an easy to way to set-up a variety of throws and makes it look very fluent in a demo... in other demo or training situations you see many, many other attack forms; if you have 3 minutes for a demo, you just choose something you want to show that looks good, that's all. There are plenty of vids that show a much largers arsenal of attack/defense forms, but for non-aikidoka it's probably not useful to watch something like that for 3 hours.

At 2:46, the attacker runs beside Segal and throws himself on the ground, Segal places his right hand on top of the man's left shoulder and his left under the attacker's shoulder. The attacker throws himself on the ground. There is no impetus from Segal. At 2:59, he is standing behind the attacker, with both of his hands under the attacker's shoulders, he then drops his hands and the attackers throws himself to the canvas. I understand that the handholds are painful, and one would roll to prevent any more pain, but the attacker never tries do hit Segal, he only runs at him with one hand extended toward Segal so Segal can grab hold of it.

A friend, I believe, you do not want to relive such an untrained turn, much less a fall, because it can even end tragically, with severe injuries to the spine or neck. I know guys who fell badly during training in rehearsals, such seemingly simple turns, they got very injured. Imagine that suddenly someone turns you on the concrete or asphalt surface of the road and smashes you.

Because it's a demonstration. In real life in those 5 seconds the attackers wrist and fingers and more would be totally broken and he'd be on the ground in pain. Only 2 martial arts kept their traditionnal battle field technics, ninjutsu and kenjutsu. Nintjutsu technics are preserved and recorded since the 12th century. Listen to Kacem Zoughari, PhD in martial art history in Japan and ninjutsu master.

It's not limited to just defense but it does take some initiative to apply the tech's to someone that isn't attacking. I've heard 2nd hand how my instructor had to deal with this during one of his black belt tests when his attackers were from a rival dojo and wouldn't fully commit to their attacks. There's a tech called Nodo or Noro Tskiage that is similar to a tech that everyone knows from his movies, Irimi Nage, that is similar to a clothesline. Nodo works by going under the attacker's chin and forcefully pushing the head up, back and down. To keep your head attached you have to twist your whole body around or throw yourself backwards. Apparently, after a few of those they started attacking with commitment.
Watching Seagal throw around all of those little Japanese men reminds me of when Kramer was "dominating the dojo"...

That’s basically the whole principle of mma. Even stuff from Wing Chun could be used well when used at the right moment as the right move. A wise man once said that the right move at the wrong moment is the wrong move, so being able to do akido or wing chun mixed with judo or jiu jitsu well takes many many years of practice and a good teacher. No, it wouldn’t. Although it’s not commonly emphasized in modern training, Aikido principles and techniques all assume that everyone is always armed with one or more edged weapons (because, in historical Japan, they would have been). Once you add razor sharp blades of various lengths to the mix, no one wants to kick, punch or shoot in to move to grappling on the ground anymore. In fact, if you search on TH-cam for Gracie Jiu Jitsu street self-defense, you might find the old gem from the 1980’s with Royce and Rickson demonstrating techniques against knife and baton attacks. No one took the fight to the ground and a lot of what was being demonstrated was astonishingly similar to Aikido techniques.

@Ventura IT Without question, Daito-Ryu was a dominant influence on the formation of Aikido. In fact. so much so that the two martial arts might even be confused for one another by an uneducated observer. However, the two are separate and distinct.
To Morihei Ueshiba, Aikido's founder, Daito-Ryu with its compendium of thousands of discrete techniques in its transmission scrolls, was too complicated and unwieldy. Under stress and full of adrenaline, it's unlikely that the brain can fully assess the immediate situation and yield technique number 8,342 in time as the optimal solution to the current combative threat. Rather, to Aikido's founder, discrete techniques did not exist. Instead, he relied on a set of essential principles, which could be dynamically combined on the fly, as the situation required, to form suitable techniques. (For examples, watch the 1935 Asahi Newspaper film).
What are those essential principles of Aikido? Well, those are an Ueshiba family secret! However, there are two good methods of "mitori-geiko" (Japanese for "using your eyes to steal) that can help reveal parts of that secret. The first is comparing Daito-Ryu and Aikido, and looking for what Ueshiba discarded and did not bring over into Aikido. For example, look at Daito-Ryu's techniques against multiple simultaneous attackers and what an Aidoka does in those situations (i.e. what Seagal did during his demonstration in 1995). Alternatively, study what building blocks all the basic techniques taught to Aikido beginners (as demonstrated by members of the Ueshiba family) have in common.
As to challenging anyone to fight. Real combat has only three (3) possible outcomes. Your opponent is maimed or killed. You are maimed or killed. You both maim or kill each other. In other words, under the best of circumstances, 66.6666% of the time will yield a bad outcome for you. Royce Gracie, undisputed UFC 1 champion, came back later in UFC 60 to defend his title and was knocked out in the first 30 seconds. Even the best have moments of bad luck. Peace is better.

Im imagining that most of the people who take the Piss out of Seven Segal and Aikido-dont actually do martial arts..it does look a bit faked when he puts an arm lock on and they roll with the arm lock becaus thats how you are trained to avoid getting you arm broken..in Judo, Ju Jitsu and Aikido..you learn how to roll out of... and go with... what ever kind of technique is used against you in a training scenario because if you didn't you would get seriously injured.... for instance with arm bar across the throat if you didn't throw your self backwards into a break fall..your Adams apple would be knocked into your throat most probaly killing you.as you wouldnt be able to breath....if you know what you are doing you can pull it back out again.
Just watch any of Steven's first 4 or 5 films to see the awesome power of Aikido in action..They dont give Black belts away like confetti they are really hard won rewards for years of hard work and dedication to you chosen martial art and to get anything above a 5th dan is only for absolute Best

'ran at him with his arms out', that's one of a great many attack forms (ryo-katadori: attacker tries to control tori by grabbing both shoulders (or the sleeves at shoulder height)); the second uke was using a different attack and NOT 'running with his arms out' (chudan-tsuki, straight punch/stab to the body). The 'running at him with arms out' is just often used because it's an easy to way to set-up a variety of throws and makes it look very fluent in a demo... in other demo or training situations you see many, many other attack forms; if you have 3 minutes for a demo, you just choose something you want to show that looks good, that's all. There are plenty of vids that show a much largers arsenal of attack/defense forms, but for non-aikidoka it's probably not useful to watch something like that for 3 hours.

At 2:46, the attacker runs beside Segal and throws himself on the ground, Segal places his right hand on top of the man's left shoulder and his left under the attacker's shoulder. The attacker throws himself on the ground. There is no impetus from Segal. At 2:59, he is standing behind the attacker, with both of his hands under the attacker's shoulders, he then drops his hands and the attackers throws himself to the canvas. I understand that the handholds are painful, and one would roll to prevent any more pain, but the attacker never tries do hit Segal, he only runs at him with one hand extended toward Segal so Segal can grab hold of it.

Look again. Segal deflects him to the ground and the attack chooses to roll gracefully rather than face plant. Aikidoka are trained to take an elegant and safer solution (rolling and break falls) when in danger of face planting or falling on their heads.

A friend, I believe, you do not want to relive such an untrained turn, much less a fall, because it can even end tragically, with severe injuries to the spine or neck. I know guys who fell badly during training in rehearsals, such seemingly simple turns, they got very injured.

There is no sparring or fighting in most Aikido schools today. Also, originally Aikido was only taught to people who usually already had a black belt in karate, judo, sumo, or some other martial art. To become an aikido student required a written recommendation and not everyone was allowed to learn it from the founder. Things have changed a little over the years and to find the real aikido that is effective as a martial art is difficult, but it's out there. The kata's are all effective but they aren't trained with intensity and not trained in real life situations. The overall goal of modern Aikido is to completely avoid fighting at all, so it's the perfect paradox. Still you can find some Aikido people who can take you out with it. And remember, this video is a demonstration, it's not a fight, the students are cooperating and giving soft attacks in order to demonstrate it. Seagal is very good at martial arts and has master level in more than one of them and is a licensed police officer as well. I guarantee that nobody in this list could handle him in his bath robe, it's just dumb to think that and most of the comments below are the perfect example of keyword warriors. I’m sorry to hear that you feel that way, but I know it can be hard to properly assess the value of something one doesn’t properly understand. But don't take my word for it. Consider instead some indisputable facts:
First of all, everyone knows that the Japanese take their martial arts very seriously. Furthermore, Aikido is a martial art recognized by the Japanese government as a “valuable cultural asset”, and the current “Doshu” (Grandmaster of Aikido) is recognized as a "Living National Treasure" by the Emperor of Japan.
Next, note the venue and the audience. This was at the 33rd "All Japan Aikido Demonstration", the annual get-together of the who's who of the Aikido world at the Tokyo Budokan, an arena dedicated to promoting Japanese martial arts both ancient and modern. Steven Seagal had just been promoted to 7th degree blackbelt a few months prior, making him one of the LOWER ranking demonstrators at this all-day event, and only one of a handful of westerners to have ever earned that rank by that date. By comparison, the skinny old man with the long white beard that Seagal walks in front of at 0:56, is Yoshio Sugino, Aikido 9th Dan and master of the Katori Shinto style of Japanese swordsmanship. Sugino was the expert hired by Akira Kurosawa to ensure that all the sword fights in movie masterpiece, "The Seven Samurai", were authentic.
Also, this was a demonstration not a fight. The joint locks and throws at the heart of the Aikido curriculum are considered too dangerous for safe competition, and their technical counterparts have been banned from competition in Olympic Judo, tournament Karate and the UFC. It takes decades of training for the demonstrator to learn how to make the techniques work without any apparent effort and for the attackers to learn how to attack and respond to techniques being applied without being seriously injured. Whatever might be said about Seagal personally, his very presence at that event, in front of the elite of the Japanese martial arts community, is a testament to his skill as highly accomplished Aikido master. Seagal had no room for serious error in front of his seniors and peers. Furthermore, the guy being thrown by Seagal at 3:07 is Haruo Matsuoka, who was a 5th degree blackbelt and also Seagal's top student at that time. As a professional Aikido instructor himself, Matsuoka couldn't risk destroying his reputation at this venue either.
@@gptlynch Well, I am not afraid to offend the Japanese, because I am Japanese myself, LOL. I should know the culture... Watch any of the George Dillman's videos on youtube if you don't know the guy. He is a 10th Dan himself and has dedicated over 20 years to perfecting his "FORCE" power. It is not just sad that people believe this stuff. It is just plain dangerous and this stuff will get you killed in the streets. Don't be impressed by credentials. These people spent decades in the safety of a dojo punching air and acting out rehersed attacks. The moment some street thug does an underhand stab with a knife, then what??? It is OK to see this as ART, or a dance, but to think that this actually works, is just folly. Sorry!

he had him in a wrist lock for about 5 seconds why didnt his opponent use his other hand to punch segal in the face
Because the joint lock is too painful to even consider using the other hand.
Demonstration
Because it's a demonstration. In real life in those 5 seconds the attackers wrist and fingers and more would be totally broken and he'd be on the ground in pain. If he did try the other hand, the same thing would happen. Don't believe it... go to any Yoshinkan aikido school and challenge the teacher to a fight and see what happens.

Aikido started in 1925 and comes from aikijutsu and kenjutsu. It's not a classic martial art per se. Only 2 martial arts kept their traditionnal battle field technics, ninjutsu and kenjutsu. Nintjutsu technics are preserved and recorded since the 12th century.

Aikido is defence where as others can be lethal peace is the theme not war.
It's not limited to just defense but it does take some initiative to apply the tech's to someone that isn't attacking. I've heard 2nd hand how my instructor had to deal with this during one of his black belt tests when his attackers were from a rival dojo and wouldn't fully commit to their attacks. There's a tech called Nodo or Noro Tskiage that is similar to a tech that everyone knows from his movies, Irimi Nage, that is similar to a clothesline. Nodo works by going under the attacker's chin and forcefully pushing the head up, back and down. To keep your head attached you have to twist your whole body around or throw yourself backwards. Apparently, after a few of those they started attacking with commitment.
