Great review. I remember when this kit appeared without any metal or photo etched parts, but I still remember them fondly in my memory. Although Hobby Boss Sd.Kfz 222 is musch newer and more detailed, Tamiya 222 can still be built and painted as a nice looking vehicle.
Great review - thanks for posting it. Quite a bit different from the kit I bought. One piece turret and mostly one piece lower hull with running gear moulded on being the main changes. I wish I had the aluminium gun barrel as well though it is the co-ax MG that is the really fragile bit - it would benefit more from and after market replacement.
Pat G Lol :) I did replace the kit co-ax with a dragon MG42 to replicate a prototype, and also because the Dragon one is much more detailed :) Some AM parts for the fenders would be a nice addition to this kit too.
I recently built this kit and it is a fun and quick build. Putting the photo-etch screens over the turret basket gave me fits though. FYI you were right some of the Jerry cans say Wasser which is of course "water" in English the other cans have"feuergefährlich" written on them which means highly flammable. It would be pronounced "foy-er-ge-fair-lish" in English...more or less. Hamilkar or Hollywood modelling can correct me if I'm wrong.
TacticalJackalope Alright I'll be patient with the screens. I only got a quick glance at the word so I made it up in a way that sounded German lol. The review was "succinct" because I was running out of space on the memory card; I finished the shot with 14 seconds left. Thanks for the info and the support :)
I built this one many many years ago (did I say many). Obviously it didn't have PE at that time, but if memory serves, it went together fine. Good review btw
Yeah Dragon is the best in my opinion, I'll be uploading another review of their Panzer IV Ausf B tomorrow. Now if only they made their instructions like Tamiya or Trumpeter does... :)
IMO the later Tamiya kits are second to none. Dragon is of course superb and offers a lot of value but their instructions stink up the place. Meng is now the God of all that is styrene in my humble opinion.
It's not new tooling as far as I can tell; the detail is a bit soft for a modern Tamiya kit so I'd saw it's still the old bits. Still, a great kit given the metal you get and you can often get this at a good proce. Hobbyboss' 222s and '3s are really good, though!
+Panzermeister36 Update.... I've completed my own model of this kit and must say that I enjoyed it's construction. I completed it in Panzer Grey and gave it just a mild weathering. It now sits with pride on my model shelf. Despite the models original age..(probably over 40 years)... it's looking very good and I recommend it to anyone.
It was an easy and fun kit to build but the shovel mount is wrong and unless you put some figs in the turret it's very obvious that the hull below is empty. I put some stuff inside and it looks pretty good. I have yet to paint it :)
I built the old version Tamiya released without the PE and barrel. It was horrible and the kit is lacking some interior detail which you need because the vehicle is open topped.
Hopefully this one's better than that; I want a nice easy build with this one as I've got two Dragon smart kits for the dio with it and I don't want to end up in the 'crazy house' lol.
Yes, i think, i´ll upload it in a few days... it´s already awesome, that you in Canada build the same model like me in Germany! and sorry for my bad English...

I got his one with some extra stuff right after building the 223 I love this little thing, its a nice build.
Alright thanks for the good news :)
Outstanding video. I just completed my kit.
Great review. Have fun building it.
Thanks Gary, I hope I will... :)
Should be a nice easy build that, another great review thanks
I'm hoping it goes smoothly, thank you :)
Built the pre-PE version a few years ago. Nice little kit. Goes together without a hitch.
Hey nice to see you back bud! I was hoping I'd have a nice, easy build with this one; thank you for the 'good news'.
I built this as a kid
I built this last year with eduard added photo etch it's an interesting subject

My bad - of course the kits would be different - mine is 1/48. Need more coffee.....

I almost forgot. Good review succinct but informative.

Panzermeister36 I didn't mean to imply that you some how intentionally shortened the video bud. I'm sorry if it came out that way.
TacticalJackalope No it didn't, It s'ok :) I was just elaborating and such.

Thanks Mark, hopefully this is a nice easy little build for my diorama.
Yep...ill have to get one of these.
Yes, yes you will... :)
Good review......Tamiya makes pretty good kits.....not as detailed as a Dragon, but good stuff. Look forward to the build of your 222.
Bill.

TacticalJackalope Ah yes but I've never built a meng kit, too expensive but yeah they're better than Dragon.
Panzermeister36 Yes are right the Meng kits can be very pricey if bought over here but from dealers in Hong Kong they can be had for about $40-45 U.S.
TacticalJackalope Here Meng and Tasca are at least $70, Tamiya's about $35-60, and Hobbyboss, Dragon, and Trumpeter are usually $45-70.
Tamiya kit are cool even the old ones from the 70s
thanks i might get this myself. :)
You should it's a great little build and you can get it cheap!
Nice kit. I Will propably get it! :)
You should it looks great!
Great review...thanks!
No problem bud, thanks for the thanks :D
Great review!
Thanks :) Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
thank you very good review
Thanks man :)
I just finished a model sdkfz 222. It was made by lindenberg though.
Wicked review!!
Thanks Coen! This'll be in the D-Day GB; thank you to you and Nigel for keeping it alive!
Is this kit a new tooling.... or is it a re-vamp of their 1970's kit... with some added photo-etch and metal gun barrel to tart it up. ?

I'm late as usual....how'd it turn out?
Nice little kit and PE....
