HERO8 also uses the much more efficient HEVC which not only saves storage space, but also provides for greater bit rate depth (100 bit rate is comparable to 148 bit rate in h.264). And that is the stock standard on-board audio - the Media Mod has a built in shotgun that promises to be even better.
g g We tend to forget the good things about the Sony. Unfortunately the length of time since the camera was introduced suggests that Sony has decided to pull back from the action camera market. Yi is another one that appears to be uninterested in bringing out a new model. At least Sony is still selling the old stock, whereas Yi has removed action cameras from their online store and they are concentrating on dash cams and baby cams.

Thank you. How does the firefly compare to the akaso? Does the akaso have linear lens correction? For shooting underwater it is important to have multiple buttons. Single button / long presses is not great as with dedicated buttons. In my experience fur underwater photos it is important to have an housing no matter of what. Too many times battery door seals fail in water resistant cameras. In salt water it’s game over.

Any of these will be quite fine. Pick the one that can get delivered to you on time. Stabilization on Osmo Action and GoPro is way better than on the others.

I have slowed it down in post production. My videos are 30FPS, and since adding a 60fps clip won't properly show, I sometimes slow them down so that each frame is visible.

May I know does the Akaso v50x come with adjustable angle (wider scene) while the distortion correction is on for video recording? I tried the SJCAM SJ8 Pro for my dancing recording and I do not like the fish eye effect, thus I turned the distortion correction ON but the scene was not wide enough afterwards. The SJ8 Pro has better distortion correction than the Akaso V50 X. And yes - it zooms a little bit. Pretty much impossible to have too wide angle and no distortion :(

There are a couple other issues with the Hero Black 8. The lens cover is no longer removable, not good if you use it in rough terrain, and - as with all GoPros - the app is buggy and loaded with issues, at least for Android. Just look at the reviews in the Playstore. After the latest update to the app, lots of people report lockups and problems connecting or staying connected.
Even with these bugs, this is the action camera that feels most complete right now. And software is something that can easily be fixed. As for the non-removable lens cover, would you please tell how many times you've ever replaced a lens glass on an action camera? Cause I use a lot of them and have never done it... There also are plenty of good tempered glass protectors.
@@TechMishka true about the tempered glass protectors. I've had damage to a DLSR lens and to the lens of my Panasonic ZS50, so lens damage did concern me. I'm just getting into action cams.

strange that you choose the GP8 over the Osmo considering the mount is garbage, the lens can't be changed and once damaged that's pretty much it. The battery compartment is so poorly designed. Can't remove the SD without taking out the battery and the lid is coming off all the time. It's quite expensive as well. Also no Sony in your top 5?
The chart was based on cameras released on 2019, that's the reason why no Sony model is there. There have been some Sony announcements, however way too expensive for an average user; I tend to disagree with some of your opinions, so let me try to explain why: - the mount is just fine; But yes - I would have also preferred the screw-based one - the lens can be changed - it is part of the front panel; I have never been in the need to replace any lens and almost always use a folio or tempered glass; So I can see that only as a theoretical, but rather not practical disadvantage - you can remove the SD card without taking the battery out. Works like charm - the battery compartment is the one I like the most - because if placed on tripod, you still have access to it. With the Osmo Action I have to remove the frame The software is the best I've had so far. Most people that know me for a while know that I've never been a big fan of GoPro, but ... here we go. Don't get me wrong - the Osmo Action is still a great camera, I just think the Gero 8 happens to be slightly better. I use them both all the time for various purposes.

@@TechMishka I'm pretty sure the GP8 has an integrated lens. If you use it for sports suck as climbing it will get scratched and not being able to change it sucks. I wouldn't really call a the hero 8 budget at £400 either and Sony is not much more expensive. The Sd card might come out without removing the battery but the battery lid almost always comes off. And on top of everything, accessories are way more expensive than the DJI's. None of these are perfect but overall I personally prefer the DJI. The screen lag doesn't bother me since most of the time is mounted on my helmet anyway. Thanks for the review
It's very simple, dish put 400 for the go pro, nothing comes close. If having the best images or videos isnt important to you, then the ease of use and battery life and the minimalistic app will certainly be enough to justify the cost
In the video - because we talk about devices from 2019; The Pro is a little older; The Pro SE is quite great too, but I thought the V50X has better price-quality ratio.

I also wanted an action camera to be dash-cam capable. But then I bough my first more expensive camera - the GitUp Git 2 Pro and realized that it hurts my heart such a powerhorse to be used as dashcam 24/7. Same with Osmo Action and GoPro. The GoPro still has imperfections in low-light HDR. But the last three are great - and the Onreal seems to be well suiting your preference too. 👍
Tech4All Actually, it’s 139.5° in normal stabilization. 149° is the full FOV (before EIS crop) in older cameras, leading to 134° stabilized. H8B has a slightly wider lens. It just hasn’t been widely publicized.
You failed to mention 1 word about any of their water proof/environmental qualities withOUT using a case. This is a BIG factor for guys like me looking for a camera for a dirt bike ride.

The real disadvantage of GoPro isn't the price, the real disadvantage is that it isn't an action cam. Action cam's don't have touch screens etc. These silly features don't "make it easy to change settings..." they make it easy to "F-up" settings and accidentally stop the recording. You can't use these stupid features while in free fall, all this nonsense does is render the camera useless as an action cam. The old Contours were the only true action cams, just push the slide on top forward and you're recording, no extra useless features to screw things up. I wish one of these manufacturers would get back to basics and make a real action cam again.
Place second-hand Yi Action First-generation to a 4th place! Yes, it is never producing 4k video, no EIS, no display, BUT: it DOES much quality in 2.5k videos, even for around 75 bucks (price for 2015) using scripting you can make some tricky stuff like manual shutter speed for both photo and video, you can bump ISO to unbelievable iso12800\iso25600 (gopro will never allow that to a user) you can decrease noisereduction to 0 (supe-crisp images!) desaturate image saturate bump shadow low shadows etc, timalapse at daylight, also at night with long shutter (8 seconds long) run as dash cam shoot wtih superview very good camera IMO, the bad part of it - Xiaomi stopped production, because of it capabilities, because nobody wants a produce good product for consumers...
No, no it is not. Sj9 strike isn't a bad camera, but it's nowhere close to being as good as the HERO8. Maybe a good competitor to the 2016 GoPro HERO5 Black.
DANIEL Rogness, as far as chip set goes. It is about the same. As far as feature goes, the sj9strike is no match for the GoPro 8. I'm using custom firmware for my sj9strike. It can shoot 96fps slow motion in 4k. Clean, clear and better translusion on leaves and skin affects by sun light. GoPro can only shoot 2.7k in slow motion, and the image is no match to the sj9strike custom firmware. The AM. chipset allows the custom firmware to push the quality to the limit.

DANIEL Rogness l'm so sorry that custom firmware is foreign to you. There are custom firmware for the sj8 floating around where the sj8 pro surpass the GoPro quality. Yes, there is a way for a 4k 96fps for that particular chipset. You be amaze soon I will share to the sj9 Strike community.
Even if 96FPS in 4K is possible (in my opinion highly unlikely), then it is quite strange why SJCAM haven't added this as a stock option? That was about to be a "gamechanger" feature. The SJ9 is unfortunately a flop. And custom ROMS are great for people like us, but nothing that common users would use.

Yup - touch screens are useless underwater. The Akaso V50X was wonderful underwater, so was the T5 Pro.

I think the same. If you use D-CInelike you can fine-tune the colors a lot - but requires a lot of patience in post-production software.

The footage of the Hero 8 and the way menus are organized are simply fantastic; I don't experience any freezes with the last two firmware versions.

DJI have made a fabulous debut, and the Osmo action is such a delightful camera!

Very positive. It wasn't included here, because it is more of a 2018-device, but is really good. VIdeo quality is similar to numbers 3, 4 and 5.

None of them will give you good results. Light indoors is usually not much, and footage may look grainy.

strange that you choose the GP8 over the Osmo considering the mount is garbage, the lens can't be changed and once damaged that's pretty much it. The battery compartment is so poorly designed. Can't remove the SD without taking out the battery and the lid is coming off all the time. It's quite expensive as well. Also no Sony in your top 5?
The chart was based on cameras released on 2019, that's the reason why no Sony model is there. There have been some Sony announcements, however way too expensive for an average user;
I tend to disagree with some of your opinions, so let me try to explain why:
- the mount is just fine; But yes - I would have also preferred the screw-based one
- the lens can be changed - it is part of the front panel; I have never been in the need to replace any lens and almost always use a folio or tempered glass; So I can see that only as a theoretical, but rather not practical disadvantage
- you can remove the SD card without taking the battery out. Works like charm
- the battery compartment is the one I like the most - because if placed on tripod, you still have access to it. With the Osmo Action I have to remove the frame
The software is the best I've had so far. Most people that know me for a while know that I've never been a big fan of GoPro, but ... here we go.
Don't get me wrong - the Osmo Action is still a great camera, I just think the Gero 8 happens to be slightly better. I use them both all the time for various purposes.
@@TechMishka I mean the lens protector on the Go Pro and I'm pretty sure that can not be changed. I've watched about 10 reviews so far and almost everyone mentioned it as a negative point. As for Sony, indeed the price is higher but you do pay for the lens quality and the OIS vs electronic. Anyway thanks for the review
@@TechMishka I'm pretty sure the GP8 has an integrated lens. If you use it for sports suck as climbing it will get scratched and not being able to change it sucks. I wouldn't really call a the hero 8 budget at £400 either and Sony is not much more expensive. The Sd card might come out without removing the battery but the battery lid almost always comes off. And on top of everything, accessories are way more expensive than the DJI's. None of these are perfect but overall I personally prefer the DJI. The screen lag doesn't bother me since most of the time is mounted on my helmet anyway. Thanks for the review
It's very simple, dish put 400 for the go pro, nothing comes close. If having the best images or videos isnt important to you, then the ease of use and battery life and the minimalistic app will certainly be enough to justify the cost

In the video - because we talk about devices from 2019; The Pro is a little older; The Pro SE is quite great too, but I thought the V50X has better price-quality ratio.
For me the most important quality is a good HDR photo and I will appreciate the possibility to mount in a car. When action cameras will deliver an excellent photo quality better that my phone I buy it! Thank you Micheal I will wait your next 2020 review!
I also wanted an action camera to be dash-cam capable. But then I bough my first more expensive camera - the GitUp Git 2 Pro and realized that it hurts my heart such a powerhorse to be used as dashcam 24/7. Same with Osmo Action and GoPro.
The GoPro still has imperfections in low-light HDR. But the last three are great - and the Onreal seems to be well suiting your preference too. 👍

Tech4All Actually, it’s 139.5° in normal stabilization. 149° is the full FOV (before EIS crop) in older cameras, leading to 134° stabilized. H8B has a slightly wider lens. It just hasn’t been widely publicized.

Yeah, with these small sensors and infinite focus - there are not too many ways to deliver acceptable image.

V50x is let down by quite poor low light performance. The Seabird performs a lot better.
Low light with these action cameras is a challenge. The Seabird has slightly bigger sensor, which gives it advantage.

The real disadvantage of GoPro isn't the price, the real disadvantage is that it isn't an action cam. Action cam's don't have touch screens etc. These silly features don't "make it easy to change settings..." they make it easy to "F-up" settings and accidentally stop the recording. You can't use these stupid features while in free fall, all this nonsense does is render the camera useless as an action cam. The old Contours were the only true action cams, just push the slide on top forward and you're recording, no extra useless features to screw things up. I wish one of these manufacturers would get back to basics and make a real action cam again.
You have a point there! While I like the touchscreen a lot, it would be good to have an option to use the camera with buttons only.

Yes, it is never producing 4k video, no EIS, no display, BUT:
it DOES much quality in 2.5k videos, even for around 75 bucks (price for 2015)
using scripting you can make some tricky stuff like manual shutter speed for both photo and video, you can bump ISO to unbelievable iso12800\iso25600 (gopro will never allow that to a user)
you can decrease noisereduction to 0 (supe-crisp images!)
desaturate image
saturate
bump shadow
low shadows etc,
timalapse at daylight, also at night with long shutter (8 seconds long)
run as dash cam
shoot wtih superview
very good camera IMO, the bad part of it - Xiaomi stopped production, because of it capabilities, because nobody wants a produce good product for consumers...

Sj9strike is as great as the GoPro 8 but alot cheaper.
No, no it is not. Sj9 strike isn't a bad camera, but it's nowhere close to being as good as the HERO8. Maybe a good competitor to the 2016 GoPro HERO5 Black.
DANIEL Rogness, as far as chip set goes. It is about the same. As far as feature goes, the sj9strike is no match for the GoPro 8. I'm using custom firmware for my sj9strike. It can shoot 96fps slow motion in 4k. Clean, clear and better translusion on leaves and skin affects by sun light. GoPro can only shoot 2.7k in slow motion, and the image is no match to the sj9strike custom firmware. The AM. chipset allows the custom firmware to push the quality to the limit.

DANIEL Rogness l'm so sorry that custom firmware is foreign to you. There are custom firmware for the sj8 floating around where the sj8 pro surpass the GoPro quality. Yes, there is a way for a 4k 96fps for that particular chipset. You be amaze soon I will share to the sj9 Strike community.
Even if 96FPS in 4K is possible (in my opinion highly unlikely), then it is quite strange why SJCAM haven't added this as a stock option? That was about to be a "gamechanger" feature.
The SJ9 is unfortunately a flop. And custom ROMS are great for people like us, but nothing that common users would use.
